C'est pourtant bien ce que fait André Soares à l'issue de la vibrante évocation qu'il consacre à Ramon Novarro (1899-1968), premier interprète de Ben Hur, partenaire de Greta Garbo dans Mata Hari et star absolue du cinéma muet jusqu'à ce que le cinéma parlant associé à de mauvais choix artistiques n'affadissent son aura et occultent progressivement sa notoriété avant une mort sordide sur laquelle Kenneth Anger est largement revenu dans son sulfureux Hollywood Babylon. Dans un style fluide et un anglais largement accessible, Soares revient sur le parcours du jeune mexicain que le contexte politique de son pays poussa à l'exil avant que le cinéma ne s'entiche de sa beauté ténébreuse et tente de le modeler à l'image de Rudolph Valentino.     TRANSCRIPT A PINEWOOD DIALOGUE WITH KEN JACOBS Ken Jacobs is a master of avant-garde cinema. For more than 50 years he has inventively probed the nature of the moving image. “Ghosts! Cine-recordings of the vivacious doings of persons long dead,” he wrote, fascinated by the power of cinema to coax reality from the flatness of the screen. Finding new ways to delve into filmed images, Jacobs created the Nervous System, a live two-projector system with which he “plays” film, in the spirit of jazz improvisation. During a major month-long retrospective, Jacobs premiered the Nervous System piece Two Wrenching Departures , to mark the deaths of Jack Smith and Bob Fleischner.
