Volume 16, Number 4 April 2013 Greetings From The Director by John Schiemer s the season comes to a close, there is much to celebrate. There have been Aa number of outstanding performances by all of our athletes this year. This includes Freeride athletes who for the fi rst me competed in a Development Compe on, and Nordic athletes who for the fi rst me competed in one of our Ci zen Races. Or an Alpine Mini World Cup athlete who for the fi rst me entered the start shack with bu erfl ies in their stomach at the top of Cli anger. Finally, former MBSEF athlete Laurenne Ross makes the podium in a World Cup Downhill Race. It was great fun digging through our vast photo archive to fi nd the “old photo” of Laurenne. Congratula ons Laurenne, we are very proud of you and all of our athletes. Unfortunately, this is also the me of year where some of our coaches decide to make life decisions. I would like to sincerely thank Anna Schulz, one of our Nordic Coaches, who will be returning home to the East Coast to a end graduate school this fall. Anna has been with us for two years and has done an outstanding job with our Nordic Athletes. She will be greatly missed. Her enthusiasm and zest for life are infec ous, and the friendships she has formed NOW AND THEN . Laurenne Ross, 2nd Place with our older athletes will hopefully last a life me. Although replacing Anna will in 2013, First Alpine Skiing World Cup Podium in be diffi cult to do, we hope to make an announcement some me this summer on Garmisch-Partenkirchen Germany, and Laurenne who will be taking on this role. Ross, proudly showing her Buddy Werner Trophy in 2001. Way To Go Laurenne!!!!!!!!! As spring approaches, our Cycling program is kicking off with two a er school sessions. These sessions begin April 10 and again on May 15. Our Cycling Program is a great way for our athletes to stay connected with their MBSEF friends as well as maintain and improve their fi tness. We will also be running the short track mountain bike races at COCC in May, and the Criterium Series at Summit High School which also begins in June. Ali Halpin, our Cycling Program Coordinator, is happy to answer any ques ons you have about our program or our cycling events. In closing, I have thoroughly enjoyed this past year and am looking forward to the spring and summer events. I have appreciated the unsolicited comments and input that so many of you have provided on how to improve MBSEF. Although we may not be able to implement change for every idea, it is good to hear feedback, whether it is posi ve or nega ve. My objec ve is to help make the organiza on be er, so your comments are helpful. Finally, It is impossible for me thank all the people who help make MBSEF such a great organiza on in this issue of Ski Tracks. However, I would like to thank all of you who have volunteered your me and fi nancial support this past season; as they say, “you know who you are”. We could not put on high quality training or events for our athletes and the Central Oregon community without your help. Cycling is great cross Ctraining for winter sports, so grab a friend and come join the MBSEF Cycling program this spring and summer. After school mountain biking will be starting up Wednesday, April 10th and will run into June. Coaches will pick up kids from school on early release Wednesdays to go ride the local trails. There are two sessions to choose from for after school mountain biking. Session 1 runs April 10-May 1, and Session 2 runs from May 15- June 5. We will also offer an after school road cycling program, session dates TBD. Two week mountain biking summer sessions will start up the week of June 17.     PREVIEW 2019 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - 5-17 Feb World Championships return to Sweden • Åre will host the World Championships for the third time after 1954 and 2007. • Austria is the most successful country at the World Championships with 95 gold medals, 99 silver, and 92 bronze medals (286 total medals). Switzerland is next on 191 medals - 64 gold, 68 silver, and 59 bronze. • Austria have collected at least one medal at 41 of the previous 44 world championships. The only exceptions are 1934, 1938 and 1939. • Austria (149) is one medal shy of winning its 150th medal in men's events. Norway (47) needs three more medals to reach 50 medals in men's events. • Sweden won its most gold (3) and its most total medals (7) in 2007, the last time the World Championships were held in Sweden (also Åre). • Sweden's last world title came at the World Championships in 2007, when Anja Pärson won the ladies' super-G, downhill, and alpine combined. • Pärson (7 gold) is one of four Swedish world champions alongside Ingemar Stenmark (5), Pernilla Wiberg (4) and Jonas Nilsson (1).     THE THIN LINE: Life on the Edge Skier Biographies BODE MILLER Bode Miller burst onto the World Cup scene as an 18-year-old in 1996 and first gained widespread recognition when he won two silver medals at the 2002 Winter Olympics in the Giant Slalom and Combined events. Miller has won a total of four gold medals and one silver medal at the World Championships. In the 2004/2005 Season, Miller won his first overall FIS World Cup title, outlasting Austrian Benjamin Raich. In the 2006/07 Season, Miller finished 4th overall and won the Super G title. In May 2007, Miller announced that he was leaving the U.S. Ski Team to race as an independent. PICABO STREET One of the most prolific women’s racers to ever grace the U.S. Ski Team, Picabo Street was most definitely a ski racing personality. The native of tiny Triumph, Idaho announced her retirement from competition following the 2002 women’s Olympic downhill at Snowbasin, Utah, ending a career that included nine career World Cup victories, the 1995 and 1996 World Cup downhill discipline titles and a trio of World Championships medals to go along with her two Olympic medals, including the Super-G gold at the 1998 Nagano Games. In addition, Street collected a total of four U.S. National titles during her illustrious career, despite being injured and away from ski racing for two years.     Second Edition - 2014 INTRODUCTION When I was asked if I would write the history of the Ancient Skiers, I was excited and willing. My husband, Jim, and I were a part of those early skiers during those memorable times. We had “been there and done that” and it was time to put it down on paper for future generations to enjoy. Yes, we were a part of The Ancient Skiers and it is a privilege to be able to tell you about them and the way things were. Life was different - and it was good! I met Jim on my first ski trip on the Milwaukee Ski Train to the Ski Bowl in 1938. He sat across the aisle and had the Sunday funnies - I had the cupcakes - we made a bond and he taught me to ski. We were married the next year. Jim became Certified as a ski instructor at the second certification exam put on by the Pacific Northwest Ski Association (PNSA) in 1940, at the Ski Bowl. I took the exam the next year at Paradise in 1941, to become the first woman in the United States to become a Certified Ski Instructor. Skiing has been my life, from teaching students, running a ski school, training instructors, and most of all being the Executive Secretary for the Pacific Northwest Ski Instructors Association (PNSIA) for over 16 years. I ran their Symposiums for 26 years, giving me the opportunity to work with many fine skiers from different regions as well as ski areas.     P. O. Box 331 Kirkland, WA 98083 Summer 2014 NORTHWEST SKI LEGENDS MUSEUM FINDS HOME IN LEAVENWORTH Four new inductees to be introduced at October Bienniel Banquet - Vote now! In 1987 at the third Ancient Skiers’ banquet, the first of the Northwest Legends of Skiing were honored. They all had been previously inducted in the National Ski Hall of Fame. In 1990 all the remaining Northwesterners in the National Ski Hall of Fame were inducted along with four others. Inductions take place at each Ancient Skiers biennial banquet. In February 2014 The Northwest Ski Museum and Hall of Fame opened the Northwest Ski Hall of Fame exhibit in Leavenworth in the Enzian Inn. If your travels take you through Leavenworth be sure to stop at the Enzian Inn on the north side of Highway 2 in the middle of town. Below is our list of current Northwest Ski Hall of Fame Inductees. IN CAMPO FEMMINILE ATOMIC CONQUISTA LA COPPA DEL MONDO DI SLALOM CON LA DICIOTTENNE MIKAELA SCHIFFRIN, TERZA GIOVANE DI SEMPRE A RIUSCIRCI Marcel Hirscher a Lenzerheide (SVI) conclude la sua straordinaria stagione di Coppa del Mondo, e lo fa con un due secondi posti: Slalom Gigante (sabato 16 marzo) e Slalom Speciale (oggi). Proprio in questa località nel 2007 esordì nel massimo circuito dello sci e nello stesso luogo, sei anni dopo, è entrato nella storia dello "sport bianco" perché è il decimo sciatore di sempre a conquistare per due anni consecutivi la Coppa del Mondo di Sci Alpino. Hirscher scrive dunque il suo nome a fianco dei "grandissimi" di questo sport che prima di lui fecero "doppietta" consecutiva, parliamo (in ordine cronologico) di Jean-Claude Killy, Karl Schranz, Gustavo Thoeni, Ingemar Stenmark, Phil Mahre, Marc Girardelli, Pirmin Zurbriggen, Hermann Maier e Stephan Eberharter. Senza dubbio è stato un cammino esaltante quello del 24enne austriaco in questa stagione, infatti, guardando il tabellino, va segnalato come su 20 gare di Coppa del Mondo in cui ha preso il via è riuscito a salire sul podio ben 18 volte (6 vittorie, 10 secondi posti, 2 terzi posti), che gli sono valse la Coppa del Mondo di Slalom (ottenuta con il secondo posto nella prova di Kranjska Gora del 10 marzo scorso) e quella "Assoluta".
