    The politicization of ill bodies in Campania, Italy Ilenia Iengo1 Marco Armiero Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden Abstract The communities affected by toxic contamination in Campania, Italy, have had to confront the challenge of proving a direct causal connection between exposure to pollutants and health issues, given a long history of mismanagement of waste. Medical studies have been conducted, but the social and political debate is static. In September 2014, the Italian Ministry of Health simply repeated earlier statements that Campania's increasing cancer rates are due to poor lifestyle habits. The article casts light on the politicization of ill bodies of Campania. We analyze three practices of political action and resistance which employed the subjectivization of physical bodies and illnesses to expose environmental injustice affecting communities. In the neighborhood of Pianura, Naples, people gathered medical records as evidence for a trial into 'culpable epidemics.' In the so-called Land of Fires, in the northern periphery of Naples, hundreds of postcards featuring pictures of children killed by rare pathologies were sent to the Italian Head of State and the Pope. Finally, in the town of Acerra, the blood of a dying shepherd became a political object to prove exposure to dioxin contamination in that area. The politicization of illness and bodies conflates the public and private, challenges the mainstream production of knowledge, and proposes an alternative narrative for affected communities and individuals. Nevertheless, the practices of this politicization have differed and are not always 'political', as we will show through the three cases.     NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY The Roman Inquisition and the Crypto-Jews of Spanish Naples, 1569-1582 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of History By Peter Akawie Mazur EVANSTON, ILLINOIS June 2008 2 ABSTRACT The Roman Inquisition and the Crypto-Jews of Spanish Naples, 1569-1582 Peter Akawie Mazur Between 1569 and 1582, the inquisitorial court of the Cardinal Archbishop of Naples undertook a series of trials against a powerful and wealthy group of Spanish immigrants in Naples for judaizing, the practice of Jewish rituals. The immense scale of this campaign and the many complications that resulted render it an exception in comparison to the rest of the judicial activity of the Roman Inquisition during this period. In Naples, judges employed some of the most violent and arbitrary procedures during the very years in which the Roman Inquisition was being remodeled into a more precise judicial system and exchanging the heavy handed methods used to eradicate Protestantism from Italy for more subtle techniques of control. The history of the Neapolitan campaign sheds new light on the history of the Roman Inquisition during the period of its greatest influence over Italian life. Though the tribunal took a place among the premier judicial institutions operating in sixteenth century Europe for its ability to dispense disinterested and objective justice, the chaotic Neapolitan campaign shows that not even a tribunal bearing all of the hallmarks of a modern judicial system-- a professionalized corps of officials, a standardized code of practice, a centralized structure of command, and attention to the rights of defendants-- could remain immune to the strong privatizing tendencies that undermined its ideals.

A hedonic model for estimating the efects of transit systems on real estate values is specifed and calibrated for the city of Naples. Te model is used to estimate the external benefts concerning property values which may be attributed to the Naples metro at the present time and in two future scenarios. Te results show that only high-frequency metro lines have appreciable efects on real estate values, while low-frequency metro lines and bus lines produce no signifcant impacts. Our results show that the impacts on real estate values of the metro system in Naples are signifcant, with corresponding external benefts estimated at about 7.2 billion euros or about 8.5% of the total value of real estate assets. 1.     Sorrento, Capri, the Amalfi Coast and Naples 24 - 31 March 2019 from £1795.00 A tempting Spring break to Italy, relaxing in the mild climate of the Amalfi coast and the Bay of Naples. We will be based in Sorrento on the Amalfi coast for the first three nights, where we will visit the Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. These are the classic Amalfi gardens laid out in terraces where umbrella pines and cypresses shade classical geometric beds edged with box and filled with modern flowers. The site of Villa Cimbrone on a cliff top promontory overlooking the sea is beyond compare. We will also take the ferry to the enchanting island of Capri and explore some of its captivating sights. We travel round the Bay of Naples, breaking our journey with visits to the unique archaeological wonders of Pompeii and Herculaneum, to the pulsating port of Naples itself. We travel out to the north of the city to spend a day at the impressive palace and gardens of La Caserta. This huge palace, with equally grand and impressive gardens, was constructed for the Bourbon Kings of Naples and on completion in the 18th century it was the largest royal residence in the world. Finally a day of art and archaeological treasures as we tour the hot-blooded city of Naples, rich with the aroma of Neapolitan cuisine. Itinerary Day 1 We depart by coach from York for Manchester Airport in time for our scheduled flight to Naples (provisional times 08.00/12.00). Upon arrival we will transfer to our hotel in Sorrento, where we will stay for the next three nights.
