Woodpeckers, Waders and Warblers: North-eastern Poland, 12-17th May Participants: Ian Reid and Tom Bedford North-eastern Poland had been on my list of places to go ever since Bill Oddie’s second series went there and he was guided around by Marek Borkowski to see goodies such as Aquatic Warbler and Great Snipe. Finally in ’11 I decided it was high time I went and I was delighted when Tom showed enthusiasm for joining me. In fact having set the ball rolling, choosing the dates, sorting out guides, and pricing flights, I then ended up in a very busy period at work and it was Tom took care of most of the remaining logistics. It is possible to do such a trip rather cheaper than we did, but we opted for the convenience of Heathrow and took BA to Warsaw at a cost of approx. £150 each. Car hire, booked through carhire3000.com was a Toyota Yaris with Thrifty, and once we had added a second driver came to about £200 for 6 days. We booked guides through Lukasz Masurek’s site wildpoland.com for the evening of 12th (for Pygmy Owl), 8 hours on 13th (Woodpeckers and the Strict Reserve), and the evening of 13th (Great Snipe). Arek Szmyura, mentioned in many trip reports was our guide for the first two, and his son Mateusz took us to the Great Snipe lek. Prices have gone up a lot since the reports I read from ’09. The Pygmy Owl trip cost 90euros, Arek’s services for 8 hours on 13th was 150euros, and the Great Snipe trip was also 90euros. -

The document is made available for transparency and information purposes only and does not constitute legal advice or legal opinion. 1 Measures taken by government/public authorities 1.1 Emergency laws/states of emergency, including enforcement actions In Estonia, the Government of the Republic declared an emergency situation on 12 March 2020 due to the pandemic spread of the COVID-19.1 The emergency situation was initially to last until 1 May 2020, but was later extended until 17 May 2020.2 The declaration, resolution and termination of an emergency situation is regulated by the Emergency Act (Hädaolukorra seadus).3 The Emergency Act gives the person in charge of the emergency situation (the Prime Minister) the right to issue orders applying various measures. The orders include a reference that the failure to comply with the measures of the emergency situation prompt the application of the administrative coercive measures set out in the Law Enforcement Act4, and that the penalty payment is € 2000 pursuant to the Emergency Act.5 1.2 Measures affecting the general population 1.2.1 Social distancing In Estonia, after the declaration of the emergency situation, stay at home orders were imposed on people who arrived in Estonia from abroad. -

Despite having a rich avifauna in Iran, limited number of studies have been conducted on lice fauna of wild birds in this region. This study was carried out to identify lice species of passerine birds in East of Iran. A total of 106 passerine birds of 37 species were captured. Their bodies were examined for lice infestation. Chapter 1 PHYLOGEOGRAPHY OF FINCHES AND SPARROWS Antonio Arnaiz-Villena*, Pablo Gomez-Prieto and Valentin Ruiz-del-Valle Department of Immunology, University Complutense, The Madrid Regional Blood Center, Madrid, Spain. ABSTRACT Fringillidae finches form a subfamily of songbirds (Passeriformes), which are presently distributed around the world. This subfamily includes canaries, goldfinches, greenfinches, rosefinches, and grosbeaks, among others. Molecular phylogenies obtained with mitochondrial DNA sequences show that these groups of finches are put together, but with some polytomies that have apparently evolved or radiated in parallel. The time of appearance on Earth of all studied groups is suggested to start after Middle Miocene Epoch, around 10 million years ago. Greenfinches (genus Carduelis) may have originated at Eurasian desert margins coming from Rhodopechys obsoleta (dessert finch) or an extinct pale plumage ancestor; it later acquired green plumage suitable for the greenfinch ecological niche, i.e.: woods. Multicolored Eurasian goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) has a genetic extant ancestor, the green-feathered Carduelis citrinella (citril finch); this was thought to be a canary on phonotypical bases, but it is now included within goldfinches by our molecular genetics phylograms. Speciation events between citril finch and Eurasian goldfinch are related with the Mediterranean Messinian salinity crisis (5 million years ago). Linurgus olivaceus (oriole finch) is presently thriving in Equatorial Africa and was included in a separate genus (Linurgus) by itself on phenotypical bases. Our phylograms demonstrate that it is and old canary. Proposed genus Acanthis does not exist. Twite and linnet form a separate radiation from redpolls. -

Sparks1,4 Received: 23 September 2020 / Revised: 18 January 2021 / Accepted: 10 February 2021 / Published online: 8 March 2021 © The Author(s) 2021 Abstract Providing artifcial eggs is a commonly used technique to understand brood parasitism, mainly by the common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus). However, the presence of a cuckoo egg in the host nest would also require an earlier physical presence of the common cuckoo within the host territory. During our study of the red-backed shrike (Lanius collurio), we tested two experimental approaches: (1) providing an artifcial “cuckoo” egg in shrike nests and (2) additionally placing a stufed common cuckoo with a male call close to the shrike nest. We expected that the shrikes subject to the additional common cuckoo call stimuli would be more sensitive to brood parasitism and demonstrate a higher egg rejection rate. In the years 2017–2018, in two locations in Poland, a total of 130 red-backed shrike nests were divided into two categories: in 66 we added only an artifcial egg, and in the remaining 64 we added not only the egg, but also presented a stufed, calling common cuckoo. Shrikes reacted more strongly if the stufed common cuckoo was present. However, only 13 incidences of egg acceptance were noted, with no signifcant diferences between the locations, experimental treatments or their interaction. -
