  • Stephen Curry and Sc30: Aligned Purpose, Amplified Impact
CASE: M-380 DATE: 01/24/20 STEPHEN CURRY AND SC30: ALIGNED PURPOSE, AMPLIFIED IMPACT Throughout my life, I have made a point to not let anyone else write my own story. For me, this means transforming, disrupting and challenging the status quo. It means taking a stance in being unwilling to accept the world’s standards as just good enough and shattering the expectations put on me by others. In other words, to Ruin the Game. —Stephen Curry, National Basketball Association player and CEO of SC30 Inc.1 Stephen Curry looked out appreciatively at the nearly 50 people gathered on a warm August day in a bright conference room near Napa, California. The group included leaders of major global companies and Curry’s personal board of advisors, a small group of trusted family and friends. Along the edges of the wall were Post-it notes galore and mock newspaper headlines: “Currys Challenge the World: 10,000 Donate This Holiday Season,” and “Curry and Obama Make Chicago Great Again.” The summit had been set up to communicate the mission and vision for SC30 Inc., Curry’s newly formed company, and to identify opportunities for collaboration among SC30’s ecosystem. Over the course of one day, teams huddled around boards and Post-it notes in the room to ideate potential pilot projects. The teams aimed for projects that could create value and impact aligned with SC30’s mission—and that could occur during key events over the coming year. At the end of the day, teams presented their ideas to Curry and the wider group.

  • “Steve Kerr”). Kerr Holds the Record for Best Career Three-Point Percentage in NBA History (“Basketball Statistics”
How Technology Changed the NBA In 2014, Steve Kerr took over as the head coach for the Golden State Warriors (“Steve Kerr”). Prior to his coaching career, Kerr was known for being a deadly three-point shooter and famously knocking down the game-winning jump shot in the 1997 NBA Finals to clinch the fifth championship for teammate Michael Jordan (“Steve Kerr”). Kerr holds the record for best career three-point percentage in NBA history (“Basketball Statistics”). So, what happened when the most potent three-point shooter in league history took over as a head coach? His Golden State Warriors won more games in a three-year span (2014-2016) than any other team in NBA history, while claiming two championships along the way (Young). Led by Kerr’s philosophy, they attempted more three-point shots during those three years than any other team in league history (“Basketball Statistics”). The Warriors’ success has caused many teams to mimic their strategy, putting up record numbers of three-point shots. During the 2016-2017 season, NBA teams shot twenty seven three-pointers per game--a number that has increased by almost ten shots in the last five years and is the highest in league history (“Basketball Statistics”). However, as Toronto Raptors’ head coach Dwane Casey notes, teams can “shoot as many 3s as you’d like, but if you don’t make them, that philosophy goes out the window” (“Lights, Cameras, Revolution”). What if I told you that it is improved technology in basketball that has resulted in players shooting more three-pointers than ever before? But, this technology has done more than just increase the number of three-point attempts.

This thesis poses this debate in the realm of basketball, seeking to find the statistics that directly correlate to the most wins. Business-minded individuals can relate this to financial investing, specifically factor investing, by analyzing what elements are associated with a security’s returns and whether that change is positive or negative. In a day when sports analytics are sweeping through leagues (see the “Moneyball” effect in baseball), having such data that can be interpreted to find how a company can optimize its success, is key to executives. The observations have found that of the several data points tested, maximizing Effective Field Goal Percentage, as well as Defensive Rating, is correlated with more total wins. iii Table of Contents LIST OF FIGURES ............................................................................................................ iv LIST OF TABLES ..............................................................................................................

Do the Golden State Warriors Have Hot Hands? Alon Daks Nishant Desai Lisa R. Goldberg∗ November 7, 2017† Abstract Star Golden State Warriors Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant are great shooters but they are not streak shooters. Only rarely do they show signs of a hot hand. This conclusion is based on an empir- ical analysis of field goal and free throw data from the 82 regular season and 17 postseason games played by the Warriors in 2016–2017. Our anal- ysis is inspired by the iconic 1985 hot-hand study by Thomas Gilovitch, Robert Vallone and Amos Tversky, but uses a permutation test to auto- matically account for Josh Miller and Adam Sanjurjo’s recent small sample correction. In this study we show how long standing problems can be re- examined using nonparametric statistics to avoid faulty hypothesis tests due to misspecified distributions. arXiv:1706.03442v2 [stat.AP] 4 Nov 2017 ∗All three authors are at University of California, Berkeley. • Stephen Curry Reading Comprehension Name___Stephen Curry Is a Basketball Player
Stephen Curry Reading Comprehension Name_______________________ Stephen Curry is a basketball player for the Golden State Warriors and was the first person to be named Most Valuable Player by unanimous vote in NBA history. He was born on March 14, 1988, and grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. Curry is the son of former NBA player Dell Curry, and he learned the basics of basketball from playing with his father. While his father was on road trips playing with his team, Curry’s mother Sonya, a former Division I volleyball athlete, encouraged him to keep playing and honing his skills in the game. Curry went to Davidson College and impressed with his talents in shooting and ball- handling. In 2009, he was drafted to play for the Golden State Warriors. After 2010, he averaged more than 22 points per game, and finished second in balloting for Rookie of the Year. Curry clinched a spot on the USA Men’s Basketball Senior National Team, and won a gold medal at the 2010 World Championships. In 2012, he continued his upward trajectory by setting an NBA record of 272 three-pointers. In 2014, Curry and his fellow teammate Klay Thompson led the warriors to an early 16- game win streak. They were hailed as the Splash Brothers due to their incredible shooting accuracy; their shots always “splashed” into the net. Curry led the Warriors to an NBA championship in 2015—the team’s first championship since 1975. In May 2016, he became the first person to be named MVP by a unanimous vote.

PAYROLL DISTRIBUTION AND THE MODERN NBA Will T. Patterson TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin May 11, 2017 Daron K. Roberts Plan II, Center for Sports Leadership and Innovation Supervising Professor John Traphagan Department of Religious Studies Second Reader 1 ABSTRACT Author: Will T. Patterson Title: Payroll Distribution in the Modern NBA Supervising Professor: Daron K. Roberts In the past 20 years, the NBA has undergone a dramatic metamorphosis as the league has become defined by cutting-edge innovation, the concentration of superstar players, and the rise of the three-point shot. In this new league, is it still possible for small market teams void of star talent to find success? These teams could look for answers in some surprising case studies of successful NBA teams that have employed more equitable distribution of their total payroll among their players. As a more equitable system makes sense on teams that lack superstars to command max contracts, the question becomes: is it worth it in the absence of a max player or max players to distribute payroll more equitably, or is it more prudent to throw greater amounts of money at more talented available players, building a team in a more traditional way? This thesis argues for the benefits of equitable payroll distribution, especially on small market teams unlikely to attract superstars. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I’d like to thank my supervisor, Daron K. Roberts, for helping me and working with me every step of the way, long before I even began writing this. I’d also like to thank my family for their constant support, but especially my brother, Max, who first helped me to understand why the great wide world of sports matters.

  • What's in a Name?
What’s in a Name? Basketball is an extremely popular game with over 200 countries worldwide having national representative teams, making it truly one of the most popular team sports in the world today. It is played by both males & females with many commencing to play before their 10TH birthday. Invented in 1891, by Dr James Naismith at the YMCA In Springfield Massachusetts, in order to help keep his athletes fit during the cold winter months, and as such was designed to be played indoors in the available college gymnasiums. The game quickly spread through the education system and was soon the favourite college winter sport and then naturally evolved internationally and then into the professional arena. Professional basketball in the USA has had a really fascinating if not somewhat conquered history en route financially to where it is today with a huge annual turnover and astonishingly outrageous salaries paid to coaches and players. The NBA started in 1946 as The Basketball Association of America with 11 teams, but virtually changed to some degree every year, merging with The National Basketball League in 1949 featuring 16 teams, but quickly dropping down to 8 teams. Under considerable financial pressure it struggled through lost franchises and then new expansion teams until the mid-seventies when it merged with The American Basketball Association (ABA) and new television million-dollar deals helped stabilise the teams’ financial positions. How about this for a list of teams in 1946: • Boston Celtics. • Chicago Stags. • Cleveland Rebels. • Detroit Falcons. • New York Knickerbockers. • Philadelphia Warriors. • Pittsburgh Ironmen. • Providence Steam Rollers.
