(bread wheat) Office of the Gene Technology Regulator PREAMBLE This document describes the biology of Triticum aestivum L. em Thell. (bread wheat), with particular reference to the Australian environment, cultivation and use. Information included relates to the taxonomy and origins of cultivated T. aestivum, general descriptions of its morphology, reproductive biology, development, biochemistry, biotic and abiotic interactions. This document also addresses the potential for gene transfer to occur to closely related species. The purpose of this document is to provide baseline information about the parent organism in risk assessments of genetically modified T. aestivum that may be released into the Australian environment. In Australia, the majority of wheat grown is T. aestivum and its cultivars. The other wheat species grown in Australia is Triticum turgidum ssp. durum L, also know as durum or pasta wheat. The terms ‘wheat’ and ‘bread wheat’ will be used as general terms to refer to T. aestivum. Bread wheat is an annual grass generally grown in Australia as a rotation crop. The varieties grown in Australia are spring wheat varieties although they are grown during the winter growing season and harvested in early summer. Bread wheat is the most widely grown food crop in the world and Australia is one of the four major exporters of wheat in the world. SECTION 1 TAXONOMY Triticum aestivum L. em Thell. is recorded

A high proportion of western Canadian wheat is exported, and it is marketed in a highly regulated fashion. As soon as western Canadian wheat is delivered by producers to a grain elevator the wheat becomes the property of the Canadian Wheat Board, which is a single desk seller for western Canadian wheat. Approval for registration into any of the eight classes of wheat in western Canada is based on merit according to disease resistance, agronomic performance and processing quality. Wheat is also produced in eastern Canada, primarily in southern Ontario. Eastern Canadian wheat is also registered on the basis of merit, although processing quality models are not quite as strictly defined as for western Canada. There is no single desk seller for eastern Canadian wheat. Eastern Canadian wheat is marketed by private trading companies and the Ontario Wheat Producers Marketing Board. Approximately 50% of eastern Canadian wheat disappears domestically. The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC), a Department within Agriculture and Agri- Food Canada (AAFC), oversees quality assurance of Canadian grains, oilseeds, pulses and special crops.

This dissertation traces the historical transformation of the Canada-UK commodity chain for wheat-bread as a lens on processes of local and global change in agrofood relations. During the 1990s, the Canadian Wheat Board (Canada‟s monopoly wheat seller) and Warburtons, a British bakery, pioneered an innovative identity- preserved sourcing relationship that ties contracted prairie farmers to consumers of premium bread in the UK. Emblematic of the increasing importance of quality claims, traceability, and private standards in the reorganization of agrifood supply chains, I argue that the changes of the 1990s cannot be understood outside of historical legacies giving shape to unique institutions for regulating agrofood relations on the Canadian prairies and in the UK food sector. I trace the rise, fall, and re-invention of the Canada-UK commodity chain across successive food regimes, examining the changing significance of wheat- bread, inter-state relations between Canada, the UK, and the US, and public and private forms of agrofood regulation over time.

However, it presents a significant amount of insoluble fibers, which may favor its use as a source of fiber in the human diet. On the other hand, the insertion of these fibers into baking may drastically affect the technological characteristics of the breads. In this context, the objective of this experiment was to evaluate the loss of cooking mass, the color of the crust and the crumb, and the specific volume of bread with inclusion of different rice husk contents in its formulation. For this, the rice husk was previously dried, milled with a gram weight fixed at 0.5 mm and mixed in bread formulations with substitution of wheat flour by rice husk in the following proportions, respectively: T1 (100: 0), T2 (95: 5), T3 (90:10), T4 (85:15) and T5 (80:20). The experiment was performed in triplicate and the data processed statically. The results demonstrated that there was no difference of specific volume and loss of mass between the formulations. However, in relation to color, the parameter of luminosity was largely affected, with a marked decrease in both crust and crumb, since there was greater substitution of wheat flour by rice husks.

Accepted 23 September, 2010 Aegilops vavilovii (Zhuk.) Chennav., a rare species, was collected from Southeast Anatolia, Turkey. During the field studies of the project “Taxonomic revision of Tribe Triticeae in Turkey”, Ae. vavilovii was accidentally recollected from three localities in anliurfa and Mardin provinces in 2007 and 2008, respectively. The main objective of this study is to shed light on the diagnostic characteristics of this rare species including its morphological, palynological and micro morphological features. Moreover, an emended and expanded description, distribution, phenology and ecology of this rare species are also provided. A. vavilovii and A. crassa are naturally found in the Southeastern part of Turkey and they share similar morphological features that caused a confused taxonomy. Pollen grains of A. vavilovii are heteropolar, monoporate and spheroidal (A/B: 1,13) typically as Poaceous. However, it generally, prefers clayish loam soils that are slightly alkaline (pH 7.7) with low organic content (1.54%). Although it is a rare species with very narrow area of distribution, very few samples have been represented in ex situ collections and the species has not been involved in any in situ conservation activities to save its genetic resources in Turkey.

Etminan4 ABSTRACT In this study, a core collection of 180 Aegilops and Triticum accessions belonging to six diploid (T. boeoticum Bioss., T. urartu Gandilyan., Ae. speltoides Tausch., Ae. tauschii Coss., Ae. caudata L. and Ae. umbellulata Zhuk.), five tetraploid (T. durum, Ae. neglecta Req. ex Bertol., Ae. cylindrica Host. and Ae. crassa Boiss) and one hexaploid (T. aestivum L.) species collected from different regions of Iran were evaluated using 20 agro- morphological characters. Statistical analysis showed significant differences among accessions. The Shannon-Weaver (HʹSW) and Nei’s (HʹN) genetic diversity indices disclosed intermediate to high diversity for most characters in both Aegilops and Triticum core sets. In factor analysis, the first five components justified 82.17% of the total of agro- morphological variation. Based on measured characters, the 180 accessions were separated into two major groups by cluster analysis. Furthermore, based on the 2D-plot generated using two discriminant functions, different species were separated into six groups, so that distribution of species accorded with their genome construction. Overall, our results revealed considerable levels of genetic diversity among studied Iranian Aegilops and Triticum accessions, which can open up new avenues for rethinking the connections between wild relatives to explore valuable agronomic traits for the improvement and adaptation of wheat. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ࢝ The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) was notified on January 31, 2018, about a few wheat plants found on an access road in southern Alberta that survived a spraying treatment for weeds. ࢝ The CFIA’s tests confirmed that the wheat found is genetically modified to be herbicide tolerant. Genetically modified (GM) wheat is not authorized to be grown commercially in any country. ࢝ Since being notified, the CFIA worked diligently with federal and provincial partners and other stakeholders to determine the origin and extent of the GM wheat plants to get as much complete, accurate, and credible information about this discovery as possible. Based on extensive scientific testing, there is no evidence that this GM wheat is present anywhere other than the isolated site where it was discovered. ࢝ There is also no evidence that this wheat has entered the food or animal feed system, nor is it present anywhere else in the environment. ࢝ Health Canada and the CFIA have performed risk assessments of this finding, and have concluded that it does not pose a food safety, animal feed, or environmental risk. ࢝ The wheat plants found in Alberta are not a match for any wheat authorized for sale or for commercial production in Canada.

    Khorasan (Kamut® Brand) Wheat Introduction Khorasan wheat (Triticum turgidum, ssp. turanicum) is an ancient wheat variety that originated in the Fertile Crescent in Western Asia. It is a relative of durum wheat and is believed to have come to North America from Egypt, following World War II. It was rediscovered in 1977 by a Montana farmer who spent the next few years propagating the small supply of original seed. In 1990, khorasan wheat was first sold under the trademark KAMUT® in the United States. The trademark was implemented to preserve minimum standards for the khorasan wheat variety and to ensure consistent quality and market supply. KAMUT® wheat is currently only grown as KAMUT® wheat has larger heads, awns and kernels than an organic certified grain and hard red spring wheat and durum. marketed to various countries Photo courtesy T. Blyth, Kamut International around the world. Plant Adaptation KAMUT® wheat production is well suited to growing conditions found in southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan, similar to durum. Northern regions with cooler, wetter conditions are less favorable for KAMUT® wheat production as disease risk may be greater and the crop requires about 100 days to mature after seeding or approximately one week later than spring wheat. KAMUT® wheat will grow well in any soil that is suitable for other cereal grain production. KAMUT® wheat has a growth pattern similar to spring wheat varieties. Each sprouted kernel produces one or two stems per seed, and each stem produces a large head with long black awns. It has moderate straw strength and grows to approximately 127 cm (4.2 ft) tall.

To promote sustainability and biodiversity conservation, there is a growing interest in some old wheat species that can achieve better grain yields than the new varieties in marginal soil and/or management conditions. Generally, common wheat is intensively studied but there is still a lack of knowledge of the competitiveness of alternative species such as spelt wheat. The aim is to provide detailed analysis of vegetative, generative and spectral properties of spelt and common wheat grown under different nitrogen fertiliser levels. Our results complement the previous findings and highlight the fact that despite the lodging risk increasing together with the N fertiliser level, spelt wheat is a real alternative to common wheat for low N input production both for low quality and fertile soils. Vitality indices such as flag leaf chlorophyll content and normalized difference vegetation index were found to be good precursors of the final yield and the proposed estimation equations may improve the yield forecasting applications.
