Previous meetings • While this is Sivasspor's first official encounter against a team from Spain, Villarreal are meeting Turkish opponents for the seventh time in UEFA competition and fourth at home, where they lost their most recent encounter, also against UEFA Europa League debutants, Osmanlıspor defeating them 2-1 on Matchday 4 in 2016/17 after a 2-2 draw in Turkey a fortnight earlier. • Villarreal's overall record against Turkish teams is W2 D3 L1; W1 D1 L1 at home. Form guide Villarreal • Villarreal finished fifth in the 2019/20 Spanish Liga to return to Europe after a season's absence and participate in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the eighth time. • The Spanish club have yet to finish outside the top two in their seven previous UEFA Europa League group campaigns and have gone through as section winners three times, including the most recent in 2018/19. Then they went unbeaten in collecting ten points to finish ahead of Rapid Wien, Rangers and Spartak Moskva before knocking out Sporting CP and Zenit and eventually crashing out to local rivals Valencia in the last eight (1-3 h, 0-2 a). Their best seasons in the competition were 2010/11 and 2015/16, when they reached the semi-finals. • Villarreal's record at home in 21 UEFA Europa League group stage matches is W15 D3 L3, including two wins and a draw in 2018/19. However, they have lost six of their last 15 home fixtures in Europe, winning the same number. Sivasspor • Sivasspor finished fourth in the 2019/20 Turkish Süper Lig to qualify directly for the UEFA Europa League group stage, where they are making their debut, becoming the ninth different club from Turkey to play in the competition proper. • This is only Sivasspor's third experience of European competition. UEFA Intertoto Cup participants in 2008, where they beat Grbalj and lost to Braga, they qualified for the UEFA Champions League in 2009/10 as Süper Lig runners- up but lost their third qualifying round tie to Anderlecht (0-5 a, 3-1 h) before suffering the same fate in the UEFA Europa League play-offs against Shakhtar Donetsk (0-3 h, 0-2 a). • The Turkish club have lost their last three European away games, all without scoring. Links and trivia • A number of Sivasspor players have operated in Spain. Fayçal Fajr has had top-flight experience in the country with Elche (2014/15), Deportivo La Coruña (2015–17) and Getafe (2017/18), as have both Arouna Koné (Sevilla 2007–10, Levante 2011/12) and Olarenwaju Kayode (Girona 2017/18), while Isaac Cofie and Spanish native Jorge Félix have played in the country's lower leagues. • Koné is a former Everton team-mate of Villarreal's Argentinian defender Ramiro Funes Mori (2015–17). • Villarreal have played more matches in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final, than any other club. This is their 75th encounter – three more than second-placed Salzburg. • Villarreal coach Emery has overseen 79 matches in the UEFA Europa League proper – 27 more than any other coach. He led Sevilla to all three of their trophy successes from 2013/14 to 2015/16 and was also a losing finalist with Arsenal in 2018/19. • By contrast, this is Sivasspor coach Rıza Çalımbay's first match in the UEFA Europa League. • Sivasspor are one of five clubs making their UEFA Europa League debut in 2020/21, the others being Granada and Omonoia (Group E), Leicester City (G) and Royal Antwerp (J). 3 Villarreal CF - Sivasspor Thursday 22 October 2020 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Estadio de la Cerámica, Villarreal Team facts Villarreal CF Formed: 1923 Nickname: El Submarino Amarillo (The Yellow Submarine) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • UEFA Intertoto Cup (2): 2003, 2004 Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) None Ten-year European record (UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2019/20: did not take part in UEFA competition 2018/19: quarter-finals 2017/18: round of 32 2016/17: round of 32 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League play-offs) 2015/16: semi-finals 2014/15: round of 16 2013/14: did not take part in UEFA competition 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA competition 2011/12: UEFA Champions League group stage 2010/11: semi-finals Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 6-1: Villarreal v NAC Breda 27/08/09, UEFA Europa League play-off second leg 5-0 twice, most recently v Rapid Wien 25/10/18, UEFA Europa League group stage • Biggest away win 0-3 three times, most recently v Astana 21/08/14, UEFA Europa League play-off first leg • Heaviest home defeat 0-4: Villarreal v Roma 16/02/17, UEFA Europa League round of 32 first leg • Heaviest away defeat 5-1: Porto v Villarreal 28/04/11, UEFA Europa League semi-final first leg UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 6-1: Villarreal v NAC Breda (see above) 5-0: twice, most recently v Rapid Wien (see above) • Biggest away win 0-3: Astana v Villarreal (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 0-4: Villarreal v Roma (see above) • Heaviest away defeat 5-1: Porto v Villarreal (see above) Sivasspor Formed: 1967 Nickname: Yiğidolar (The Braves) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • None Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) None 4 Villarreal CF - Sivasspor Thursday 22 October 2020 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Estadio de la Cerámica, Villarreal Ten-year European record (UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2019/20: did not take part in UEFA competition 2018/19: did not take part in UEFA competition 2017/18: did not take part in UEFA competition 2016/17: did not take part in UEFA competition 2015/16: did not take part in UEFA competition 2014/15: did not take part in UEFA competition 2013/14: did not take part in UEFA competition 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA competition 2011/12: did not take part in UEFA competition 2010/11: did not take part in UEFA competition Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 3-1: Sivasspor v Anderlecht 04/08/09, UEFA Champions League third qualifying round second leg • Biggest away win N/A • Heaviest home defeat 0-3: Sivasspor v Shakhtar Donetsk 20/08/09, UEFA Europa League play-off first leg • Heaviest away defeat 5-0: Anderlecht v Sivasspor 28/07/09, UEFA Champions League third qualifying round first leg UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win N/A • Biggest away win N/A • Heaviest home defeat 0-3: Sivasspor v Shakhtar Donetsk (see above) • Heaviest away defeat 2-0: Shakhtar Donetsk v Sivasspor 25/08/09, play-off second leg 5 Villarreal CF - Sivasspor Thursday 22 October 2020 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Estadio de la Cerámica, Villarreal Squad list Villarreal CF Current season All-time UEL League UEL UEFA No. Player Nat.
