“Striving for Excellence”

PRINCIPAL REPORT Ph 58265212 15/04/2010 Dear Parents, [email protected]

THANK YOU Thanks to a fantastic group of people last Sunday, our grounds are looking amazing. I was so impressed with how hard everyone work and in particular the children who were keen to help with the tasks. It was so lovely to walk in on Monday morning and see everything looking so tidy. The cricketers even commented on the smooth pitch devoid of sand and leaves.

PREP ASSESSMENT Over the past few weeks Jenny Bathman has been busy completing the Prep Assessments. I have been so impressed with the children’s knowledge. The assessment gives Jenny valuable information around what the children know and what they need to know next.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES

I have been asked to clarify regulations regarding exclusion from school with infectious diseases. For Gastro students are excluded from school for 24 hours after their last bowel movement or episode of vomiting. For Conjunctivitis students are excluded until the discharge for the eyes has ceased. For Impetigo- School Sores students are excluded until appropriate treatment has commenced. Sores on an exposed surface must be covered with a watertight dressing. Please refer to Schedule 7 which is attached to the newsletter, it contains details regarding other infectious diseases.

TAKE HOME READERS Several of our book tubs are looking extremely depleted. Could you please check at home to see if you have any take-home books which belong to the school? Often they become mixed up with children’s personal books.

PREP PHOTOS The Shepparton News is coming at 11.40am on the 7th March to take the Prep photos.

CURRICULUM DAY Staff from , Toolamba and PS attended a Professional Learning Session around reading facilitated by D Snowball and Lorna Ward. Prior to the day staff had quite a bit of professional reading to do so that they were familiar with the content of the day. We all came away from the day inspired with lots of knowledge to bring back into the classroom.

CANBERRA CAMP It will be an early start for students on Monday morning when they head off to Canberra. Filippa, Sarah, Craig and Gabby Bathman will be going with them. Whilst Craig is away Brad, Kate and I will be taking the Grade 2 students. I’m sure they will have a fantastic time.

REGIONAL ATHLETICS Reeve competed at the Northern Country Region Little Athletics Championships on the weekend at Bendigo. Athletes were allowed to enter 4 events over the 2 days. Day 1 Reeve’s events were 70 m sprint, he came first, 200 m sprint, again first place. Day 2 Reeve took part in the 100m sprint where he came 2nd and 60m hurdle where he came 1st. First place automatically allows you to compete at State level, at Albert Park, Melbourne on the long weekend in March. Reeve is lucky to compete in all events Have a lovely weekend, due to his second place race time. Regards Heather

The first meeting of the new Council will be held on Monday 20th March to elect the office bearers. This meeting is chaired by the Principal. Thereafter, the fully ASSEMBLY AWARDS constituted new School Council will meet, chaired by the duly elected president. What is a School Council and what does it do? All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally formed bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within centrally provided guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students. Who is on the School Council? There are three possible categories of membership:  A mandated elected Parent category. More JUNIOR SCHOOL COUNCIL AWARDS than one third of the total members must be from this Zoe Fasano, Harry Walta, Ashleigh Bedwell, Lucy category. Department of Education and Early Kinnane, Peter Traval, Zac Sawyer, Jonty Tyquin, Reeve Childhood Development (DET) employees can be Evans, Zoe Veness,Spencer Mason, Billy Corbett. Parent members at their child’s school as long as they

are not employed at the school.

 A mandated elected DET employee category.

Members of this category may make up no more than

one third of the total membership of school council.

The principal of the school is automatically one of

these members.

 An optional Community member category. Its

members are appointed by a decision of the council

because of their special skills, interests or

experiences. DET employees are not eligible to be

Community members.

The term of office for all members is two years. Half the

members must retire each year, creating vacancies for the STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE AWARDS - annual school council elections. Cohen Briggs, Ava Giles, Tyson Jeffers, Declan Roberts, Why is Parent membership so important?
