SAINT BARNABAS – a pathway to God through prayer and service.

Belonging before believing – Saint Barnabas is a place to belong; a place to explore and go deeper in your faith; a place to learn how to pray, grow and serve in the town and world. Welcome!

TODAY’S READINGS

You are encouraged to participate fully in this online service from wherever you may be this morning. In- person worship has been suspended due to the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic. The service is taken from the Book of Common Prayer and other sources approved by The Episcopal Church. It has been printed in this bulletin for your ease of use and convenience. Please join in the prayers and responses printed in bold just as you would were we worshipping together in public.

Welcome to Saint Barnabas Church. As we draw near the end of Matthew’s Gospel, the opposition to Jesus intensifies. Today the Pharisees seek to entrap Jesus, asking if it is lawful to pay taxes to the emperor. The trap would be to offend either zealous Jewish patriots or else offend the ruling class in Jerusalem including the Romans. Jesus’ answer points instead to Jewish teaching that the government, even a pagan one, has legitimate authority, but that authority cannot be allowed to interfere with our duty toward God.

In our ongoing story of the Exodus, it is time for the Jews to move on in their journey to the land of promise. Moses asks for a sign of God’s favor. God gives two signs. One is God’s promise to go with the people on their journey to the Promised Land and the other is to give Moses a glimpse of God.

The second reading today begins several weeks of reading Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians. This is probably the earliest of Paul’s letters. Things have gone well since he left and he begins by giving thanks for their faithfulness. This church, however, had some problems and confusion about the second coming of Christ. In coming weeks, we will hear Paul’s teaching about that. Central to every gathering of Christians for worship is intercessory prayer. Our prayer is always for the church and the world. A striking illustration was in the early Christians praying for the emperor who was persecuting them. Our faith calls us to pray for and to minister to all aspects of life. The liturgy reminds us that God is concerned for all creation and is the Savior of all. From The Rite Light: Reflections on the Sunday Readings and Seasons of the Church Year. The Readings

A Reading from the Book of Exodus [33:12-23]

Moses said to the Lord, “See, you have said to me, ‘Bring up this people’; but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ Now if I have found favor in your sight, show me your ways, so that I may know you and find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.” God said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” And he said to God, “If your presence will not go, do not carry us up from here. For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people, unless you go with us? In this way, we shall be distinct, I and your people, from every people on the face of the earth.”

The Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing that you have asked; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” Moses said, “Show me your glory, I pray.” And God said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you the name, ‘The Lord’; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. But,” God said, “you cannot see my face; for no one shall see me and live.” And the Lord continued, “See, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock; and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen.”

Reader: Here ends the reading.

A period of silence for reflection follows.

A Reading from the Book of Psalms [99]

1 The Lord is King; let the people tremble; he is enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth shake.

2 The Lord is great in Zion; he is high above all peoples.

3 Let them confess his Name, which is great and awesome; he is the Holy One.

5 | P a g e

4 "O mighty King, lover of justice, you have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob."

5 Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God and fall down before his footstool; he is the Holy One.

6 Moses and Aaron among his , and Samuel among those who call upon his Name, they called upon the Lord, and he answered them.

7 He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud; they kept his testimonies and the decree that he gave them.

8 O Lord our God, you answered them indeed; you were a God who forgave them, yet punished them for their evil deeds.

9 Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God and worship him upon his holy hill; for the Lord our God is the Holy One.

A Reading from the First Letter to the Thessalonians [1:1-10]

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace.

We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers and sisters beloved by God, that he has chosen you, because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of persons we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to speak about it. For the people of those regions report about us what kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God, and to wait for God’s Son from heaven, whom God raised from the dead-- Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming.

The Gospel Matthew 22:15-22

The Pharisees went and plotted to entrap Jesus in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose title?” They answered, “The emperor’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away.

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon The Rev. Natalie Thomas

A period of silence for reflection follows.

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: By the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

8 | P a g e

and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, the Spirit is worshiped and glorified. The Spirit has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Leader: O Lord our Governor, bless the leaders of our land, that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth. People: Lord, keep this nation under your care.

Leader: To the President and members of the Cabinet, to Governors of States, Mayors of Cities, and to all in administrative authority, grant wisdom and grace in the exercise of their duties. People: Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

Leader: To Senators and Representatives, and those who make our laws in States, Cities, and Towns, give courage, wisdom, and foresight to provide for the needs of all our people, and to fulfill our obligations in the community of nations. People: Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

Leader: To the Judges and officers of our Courts give understanding and integrity, that human rights may be safeguarded and justice served. People: Give grace to your servants, O Lord.

Leader: And finally, teach our people to rely on your strength and to accept their responsibilities to their fellow citizens, that they may elect trustworthy leaders and make wise decisions for the well-being of our society; that we may serve you faithfully in our generation and honor your holy Name.

People: For yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. Amen.

9 | P a g e

The Leader and people pray this concluding Collect.

People: Lord God Almighty, you have made all the peoples of the earth for your glory, to serve you in freedom and in peace: Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Confession

Deacon: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

All: God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen.

The Absolution

Presider: Almighty God, have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Peace

Presider: The peace and love of Christ be always with you. People: And also with you.

THE HOLY EUCHARIST

The Offertory Hymn Let All Things Now Living arr. Katherine K. Davis Sung by the Choir

Let all things now living a song of thanksgiving to God the creator triumphantly raise, Who fashioned and made us, protected and stayed us, who guideth us on to the end of our days. His banners are o’er us, His Light goes before us, a pillar of fire shining forth in the night; Till shadows have vanished and darkness is banished, as forward we travel from light into light!

His law He enforces, the stars in their courses, the sun in his orbit obediently shine. The hills and mountains, the rivers and fountains, the deeps of the ocean proclaim Him divine. We too should be voicing our love and rejoicing; with glad adoration a song let us raise, Till all things now lining unite in thanksgiving to God in the highest, hosanna and praise!

Presider: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Presider: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord.

Presider: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

11 | P a g e

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Presider proceeds.

Presider: God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise. People: Glory to you for ever and ever.

Presider: At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. People: By your will they were created and have their being.

Presider: From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. People: Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Presider: Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages, you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your eternal Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace. People: By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed.

Presider: And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

All: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Presider: And so, O God, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 | P a g e

On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, People: We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.

Presider: Lord God of our Fathers and Mothers: God of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, Leah and Rachel; of Moses and Zipporah; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. People: Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

Presider: Accept these prayers and praises, O God, through Jesus Christ our great High , to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN.

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

Presider: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People: Therefore, let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Prayer from the Scottish Episcopal Church

People: God of unending love, you are present to us in Word and Sacrament. With all around the world who gather to worship, I offer you my praise and thanksgiving; and though I cannot eat the bread of God, or drink the royal wine of heaven, I pray that I may know the fountain of your love pouring upon me and your Incarnate presence encompassing me behind and before, that through the power of your Spirit, I may rejoice in the sure hope that I abide in your wondrous love now and for all eternity, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Post Communion Prayer

Presider: Let us pray.

All: Eternal God, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
