Ky

Albanian coastal area in the Mediterranean sea is about 380 km. long with about1 284 km along the Adriatic Sea, and the remain 96 km facing the Ionian Sea. This area represents the Easter side of Otranto Strait. River mouths and deltas, lagoons system, abandoned riverbeds, inland, marsh labyrinths, sandy beaches, dunes covered with vegetation, dens forests, represent Albanian littoral, with enormous international importance for its biodiversity and natural productivity. This area is considered one of the most complicated natural areas of the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper it is attempted to present a general evaluation of the natural particularities of the sea coast in Albania. Morphological classification and coastal evaluation are the principal components of the paper. Marine and onshore integrated surveys and the studies for investigation, monitoring and estimation of the physical characteristics of the Albanian coastal area were performed during the period 1958-2005. The natural particularities of the sea coast is mainly determined by variation of the impact of climate change, continental water discharge in the sea, suspended load discharge, wave refraction, trajectory of the main marine currents in the coastal area, etc. The shores have differences concerning geological, climatic, geomorphologic, sediment logic. Fluvial features in structure of a coastal zone and talasographic field.

At the Ambassadors Conference in London, Austro-Hungary argued that the involvement of Shkodra City was essential to the economy of the new Albanian state. Meanwhile Russia did not open the way for solving the Shkodra problem, Russian diplomats thought how to satisfy Serbia's ambitions in Northeast Albania, respectively in Kosovo Beyond those considerations of a political character, on 8 October 1912, was the youngest member of the Balkan Alliance, the Shkodra northern neighbor, Montenegro, that rushed to launch military actions, thus opening the first campaign of the First Balkan War. The Montenegrin military assault, as its main strategic objective in this war, was precisely the occupation and annexation of the historic city of Shkodra, a city with a big economic and cultural importance for the Albanian people and territory.

STATE, LAW, AND REVOLUTION: AGRARIAN POWER AND THE NATIONAL STATE IN ALBANIA, 1850-1945 by Besnik Pula A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Sociology) in the University of Michigan 2011 Doctoral Committee: Professor George P. Steinmetz, Chair Professor Howard A. Kimeldorf Professor Margaret R. Somers Professor Ronald Grigor Suny Professor Michael D. Kennedy, Brown University © Besnik Pula 2011 DEDICATION To my wife, Shpresa. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS As I ponder all the individuals that have had a role in making this dissertation see the light of day, I realize how difficult it is to properly recount the numerous ways and uncountable acts, large and small, with which others have shaped, supported, and directly or indirectly helped me arrive at this finished product. I was extremely fortunate to have had a group of exceptional historical social scientists as members of my committee, whose support carried me from my early days as a graduate student at Michigan through the years of research and writing of this dissertation. All these individuals have made tremendous efforts in giving me the best training a rookie graduate student in sociology can get. I can only hope to live up to the high standards they have set. My principal advisor, George Steinmetz, has played an enormous intellectual and mentoring role not only during the research and writing of this dissertation, but during my entire graduate career. George was patient enough to stick with me as I scrapped my original dissertation topic to end up working on the one here.

Forum of EthnoGeoPolitics Main Article—Extensive Review Essay and Research Note What (Little) We Know about Albanian Tribes: Reflections and Tabulations Caspar ten Dam Robert Elsie, The Tribes of Albania: History, Society and Culture London/New York: I.B. Tauris, 2015, 368 pages. ISBN: 978-1-78453-401-1 (hardback) / 978-0- 85773-932-2 (e-book) In Honour and Memory of Dr Robert Elsie (1950 – 2017) This essay is about major findings in Elsie’s Tribes of Albania, some of his related works, and other sources. It is based on a much shorter book review solely focused on Tribes of Albania that already has been published in the preceding issue of our journal (see Ten Dam 2018: 38-45). The latter review—and perhaps parts of this essay as well—will form part of a broader yet shorter review essay on several of Robert’s Elsie last works on the Albanians, which the peer-reviewed journal Iran and the Caucasus (Brill) intends to publish sometime this or next year. NB: citations and other references from Elsie’s Tribes of Albania—the main book under review— are indicated only by the relevant page numbers of that work, e.g. ‘(p. 1)’, ‘(p. 100)’, etcetera (sometimes e.g. ‘(Elsie p. 100)’ in order to distinguish it clearly from citations and references of other sources in the same paragraph). The other source references in the main text and the footnotes of this article are shown in the Author-Date version of the Modern Humanities Research Association (MHRA) referencing style i.e. ‘(Author Year: page number)’, the preferred referencing format of this journal.
