Uh, do you think that the fourth of July fireworks can end now? Please? Teylor: Uh, I think they're just here now. Rileigh: Yeah. Teylor: It's—it's like—like plague and murder hornets. That's what we have. Sydnee: I—it is—they started long before the fourth. Uh, and they persist. They were so loud last night, and very close to us in proximity. Rileigh: They were very close. Sydnee: I could kind of see them through the trees. I couldn't see them well, so I couldn't tell exactly where they were coming from, but I could kind of see them. The Self is Dead – Alienation and Nihilism in Rick and Morty Abstract Drawing upon Erich Fromm’s psychoanalytical-diagnosis of man in capitalism, this essay reflects upon some of the most political and philosophical themes of Cartoon Network’s adult animated sitcom Rick and Morty. It focuses mainly in juxtaposing the nihilism and the alienation of the characters Rick and Jerry, respectively. Discussing the loss of agency due to the illusions and repressions of contemporary society, the essay concludes that capitalism benefits from both Jerry and Rick’s self-destructive worldviews. JOMEC Journal Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies Published by Cardiff University Press When Tourism Comes to You (But You Still Have to Go Get It, Dawg): The Rickmobile and Transmedia Tourism/Fandom Paul Booth DePaul University Email: [email protected] Keywords Fandom Merchandising Mobile Advertising Social Media Branding Tourism Consumer Culture Transmedia Abstract This paper analyses the Rickmobile, a mobile, pop-up merchandise car themed and designed around the eponymous Rick Sanchez (voiced by Justin Roiland) from Cartoon Network’s Rick and Morty (2013- ), as a site of transmedia mobile pilgrimage and fan-tourist destination. As a material fan object and as an object of fan tourism, the Rickmobile becomes a site of overlapping discourses surrounding the historical contexts of cult merchandising, media pilgrimage, and fans’ social media reporting. Reflecting aspects of the show, it can be seen as a transmedia brand extension. At the same time, the Rickmobile encourages a particular type of fan engagement, harnessing active fan agency and encouraging fans to create their own Rick and Morty experience – but in doing so, fans become simultaneously imbricated within authorized, top-down and commercially-aligned structures. Academically, it has been analysed from a mostly philosophical approach, leaving a lot to say regarding its impact on media and culture studies. Thus, the aim of this essay is to study how Rick and Morty portrays the dysfunctional family, focusing on the parental figures of Rick, Beth, and Jerry. These characters present toxic traits throughout all three seasons of the series and contribute to the dysfunctionality of the family. The results of the analysis show how the series’ nihilistic approach to life resonates with the Millennial generation, as does its representation of the dysfunctional family. This dysfunctionality is related to detrimental aspects of modern society such as toxic masculinities, emasculation of father figures and problematic motherhoods. Keywords: millennial, family, postmodernism, motherhood, masculinity 2 Table of Contents 1. Introduction 4 2. Rick and Morty: Millennial Television 5 3. Dysfunctional Families 6 3.1.

  • Rick, Morty, and Absurdism: the Millennial Allure of Dark Humor by Kim Koltun
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by DigitalCommons@CalPoly Author Biography Kim Koltun recently graduated with a major in sociology and a minor in history. She is from Manhattan Beach, CA. Her academic interests include modern Japan, world-systems theory, and U.S. mass incarceration. She cur- rently works for a company that connects independent, social-issue docu- mentaries with educators. Koltun Rick, Morty, and Absurdism: The Millennial Allure of Dark Humor by Kim Koltun Abstract The purpose of this paper is to investigate the millennial generation’s appeal to dark and absurdist forms of humor, using the show Rick and Morty as a pri- mary example. I first establish my definition of Absurdism—based on Nagel and Camus—and how Rick and Morty qualifies as an Absurdist work. I then go on to outline the popularity of the show among millennial audiences and explore its allure. There are three important sociological contexts to this explanation: the contrast between upbringing and reality, expedited modernity, and rapidly changing information structures. These set the stage for a distinctive style of humor that materialized as a means of comprehending the absurdities of life. I finish the paper with a section on how Nagel and Camus posit we respond to absurdity and how Rick and Morty and its millennial viewers reflect Absurdist philosophy. “If sub specie aeternitatis there is no reason to believe that anything mat- ters, then that doesn’t matter either, and we can approach our absurd lives with irony instead of heroism or despair”—Thomas Nagel1 “Nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody’s going to die.

  • The Beagle Staff Advent Wreath Event Thanksgiving
THE Volume 1 Issue 2 BEAGLEDecember 2019 Saint Joseph School Thanksgiving Food Drive This year the 6th grade participated in the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive as our service project. The drive was held from November 12 through November 15. The 6th graders were responsible for making a flyer to distribute to the SJS students detailing which food would be collected, and also for reminding families to bring in their food for the needy. Each grade had a specific food to collect and everyone did their part in donating a large amount of food. The food items included: canned green beans; stuffing; potatoes; cranberry sauce; pasta and sauce; nuts/raisins/candy; pudding and pie crust; and beverages. Once all the food was collected, a group of 6th grade volunteers brought all the food to the Parish Center, where it was organized and sorted. After that, my mom, Mary Doheny, collected all the food and brought it to St. Peters Church in Yonkers where it could be distributed to the needy. During the holiday season, the Thanksgiving Food Drive reminds The Thanksgiving Play us that it is important to remember those less fortunate than ourselves and to help those in need. Every year, the Kindergarten and 4th grade book buddies put on a Owen Doheny ‘22 show about the first Thanksgiving. This year the play took place on No- vember 20 in the Parish Center. The Kindergarten and 4th grade staged the first Thanksgiving with the 4th grade narrating the events and the Kindergarteners acting them out. They practiced hard for two weeks and the play was a wonderful production.
