Alden Kindred of America 2020 - 2021 Annual Report 1 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The past year began in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic when pretty much all in-person programs were curtailed by government restrictions. It now ends with the slow resurgence of our lives as we get back to normal. How did we manage during this 2020 year when hopes were high for a super celebration of the 400th Commemoration of the voyage of The Mayflower to Plymouth? Our first reaction was disappointment not to be having the celebration we had worked on and planned for years. Then we turned to determination and held our first “Virtual” Annual Meeting through Zoom. It was not an easy task, but we pulled it together and hundreds attended online. Our Zoom webinar allowed only the presenters to speak, but our viewers could “chat” and we were able to get attendance by son or daughter of John and by asking them to type in the Alden child from whom they descend. They were also able to ask questions and vote on items requiring action. They could also hear and see our special lectures and programs. People liked it, so we will add a virtual component to all annual meetings from now on. I am pleased to report that our three part-time staff members were never laid off as we applied for and received the government grants to support operations during the pandemic. The office stayed open the entire year. We also never closed our doors and offered tours to small groups of people wearing masks and socially distancing. We were one of the few Pilgrim historical sites to stay open in the area. Haunted House, our traditional large Halloween event was touch ‘n go, but a determined group redesigned the event with safety in mind. We had groups of five or six instead of the usual long lines of adults and children. We limited attendance and held it two nights instead of one. We doubled the size of the maze so social distancing was possible, and we replaced children’s games with family scavenger hunts. The results were positive, as children had been cooped up too long! Our virtual programs increased significantly thanks to the hard work and talent of our Executive Director, Desiree Mobed. We made new and lasting friendships through these programs. We also expanded our Facebook presence through the Pages of both the Alden House and the Mayflower Descendants of Priscilla Mullins and , the latter so ably tended by its founder, Adryn Sumner, who also serves on our Board of Directors. One of the special relationships that developed was with Randal Charlton, the author of “The Wicked Pilgrim”, a story of his father’s destiny that spearheaded the 1957 building and launching of Mayflower II. Out of this first virtual lecture has come a series of lectures, the funding of some scholarships, and a budding relationship (Twinning) with Dorking, UK. Our membership remains solid and growing. Our endowment fund has doubled, and your Board of Directors has worked diligently to keep our National Historic Landmark in good shape. Most important, we launched our Alden Building Campaign to raise $2.3 million! This is by far the largest undertaking ever for the Alden Kindred. It was prefaced with strategic planning processes, visioning sessions, a great deal of help from board members and other friends who had knowledge of Building Development and Capital Campaigns. The ABC will do 3 things: 1). Expand the barn to create the Center for Living History at the Alden House. It will be fully accessible, tech- smart, and will tell the Pilgrim and Alden Story all over the world. 2). It will create a special fund restricted for the preservation of our historical assets at the Alden House and First Site properties. 3). It will increase our financial base to support year-round programming for the new center and erase our existing mortgages on the property annexed in 2015, which has two Alden buildings circa 1920s currently providing rental income. We are we on our way, having raised in gifts, grants, and pledges to date $700,000. With every Alden Kindred Member donating whatever they can, it is my hope that in next year’s Annual Report, I can say, “We did it!”

Pauline Ryder Kezer, President, Alden Kindred of America.

he 2021 Speak for Thyself Awards will be held August 5, 2021, at the Alden House Historic Site. We will be Thonoring four women with the Speak Award this year. Two women were nominated in 2020, but that event never occurred due to the pandemic, and two were nominated for 2021. One honoree from 2020 (Thyme Sullivan) will be honored in 2022. The 2021 Speak for Thyself Honorees are: Donna Curtin from Plymouth, MA, is the Executive Director of Pilgrim Hall Museum where she stewards the world’s most significant collection of the possessions of theMayflower Pilgrims and fosters inclusive understandings of America’s colonial beginnings. Since receiving her PhD in Early American History, Dr. Curtin has spent her career working and advocating for historic preservation and women’s history. Mary Huth from Rochester, NY, is a recognized expert on Susan B. Anthony. As an archivist for the University of Rochester for 44 years, she managed collections that covered the suffrage, anti- suffrage, and anti-slavery movements. Mary co-edited Susan B. Anthony and the Struggle for Equal Rights (2012) and curated exhibitions on a variety of subjects, including the online exhibition that commemorated the 100th anniversary of Anthony’s death. Lynne McKenney Lydick from Worcester, MA, has a mission to ensure that women of the past, on whose shoulders we all stand, are remembered and honored. An actor, educator, public historian and activist, Lynne brings courageous, determined, and capable women back to life, like suffragette Abby Kelley Foster in her one-woman play Yours for Humanity - Abby, which has enthralled thousands since 2006. Jayne Talmage O’Farrell from Duxbury, MA, serves as president of Duxbury 2020, which helped commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s arrival in Plymouth with the publication of the book Duxbury Our Pilgrim Story: A 2020 Perspective, interpretive signage along the 1623 Green’s Harbor Path, and an archaeology dig with the Samson Kindred to locate the Duxbury homestead of Pilgrim Henry Samson.

The Aspiring Priscilla Award is given to a young woman who is a community advocate and already making a difference in the world. In 2021 we honor: Maya Stahl who is a 2021 graduate of Duxbury High School where she was active in the National and French National Honor Societies. As a junior she was an intern at the Alden House. Last summer she stepped up to become a guide, successfully navigating COVID protocols to help keep the house open to visitors. Her dedication to the Alden House Historic Site is admirable and very much appreciated by all who meet and work with Maya.

The event will be held at the Alden House Historic site at the start of the Alden Kindred annual reunion. Many venues remain closed or unable to cater events due to staffing issues post COVID, but like our Pilgrim ancestors, the committee has been resilient, determined and leveraged their resources to hold this important event at the homestead of Priscilla Alden! Respectfully submitted, Anne Cobuzzi, Chair

14 Alden Kindred of America 2020 - 2021 Annual Report SCHOLARSHIPS

“I have learned that being an Alden is about stepping up, about “Never give up, for that is just having the courage to leave your comfort zone and lead – then take the place and time that the on that role with humility and integrity…I hope to learn and draw tide will turn.” from this family history as I embark on my own journey from my – Weston Moran, 2021 John and familiar home into new experiences.” Priscilla Alden Scholarship Duxbury High School – Molly Holbrook, 2021 Dr. Donnell B. Young Scholarship recipient

Molly Holbrook 2021 recipient of the Dr. Donnell B. Young Scholarship The scholarship committee received four outstanding applications for the Dr. Donnell B. Young award from members around the country: Reed Thomason in Madison, Alabama; Molly Holbrook, in Shoreview, Minnesota; Elizabeth Lau in Provo, Utah; and, closer to home, Ian Wanger, in Marblehead, Massachusetts. All had excellent academic records, participated in a wide variety of activities, had volunteered in their communities, and are wonderful ambassadors of the Alden legacy. The committee had its work cut out but, after careful review, selected Molly Holbrook as the 2021 recipient. Thanks to generous support from the Alden Kindred of America, Molly will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

A straight-A student at Roseville Area High School and an active member in her school and church choirs, Molly is also focused on helping feed the hungry, especially children. Molly volunteered at her local Ronald McDonald House, doing cooking for families of sick children and helping her mother deliver Meals on Wheels for many years. She also enjoys baking and recounted a story about spending several months developing a blueberry pie recipe for the State Fair contest. To her dismay, her cats ruined the pie on the morning of the competition! A descendant of Sarah, Molly plans to study food science at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

Weston Moran 2021 recipient of the John and Priscilla Alden Scholarship Our John and Priscilla Alden Scholarship for $500 is given annually to a Duxbury High School student who is interested in either studying a trade or majoring in history. This year’s award goes to Weston Moran, the class president and an outstanding student in English, history and foreign languages who was also involved in the school’s drama department. Weston plans to attend Boston University. In his moving remarks at graduation, Wes told his classmates, recalling the challenges of the past year, “I am so proud to be standing up here today looking at us all together, united.”

Congratulations to both students! Funding for the scholarships is made possible from donations by members of the Alden Kindred. If you are interested in learning more about supporting the scholarship program, please contact Linda Osborne at [email protected]. Alden Kindred of America 2020 - 2021 Annual Report 15 DUXBURY 2020 The Plymouth 400 Commemoration and partnership between the Alden Kindred of America and Duxbury 2020, Inc. provided an opportunity to revisit Duxbury’s Pilgrim Story. Duxbury’s DNA is in the founding of America. Duxbury was an original settlement outside of Plymouth located five nautical miles north and home to 18 Mayflower passengers and their families.

Inhabitants were in Duxbury as early as the Great Cattle Division of 1623 and later as part of the Great Land Division of 1627. Duxbury was incorporated as a separate town in 1637.

Leaders of the Plymouth Colony with surnames such as Alden, Bradford, Soule, Browne, Brewster, Standish, Collier, Delano, Samson, Howland, Prence and others established shoreline acreage, in some situations as great as 100 acres for multiple family members.

To honor these leaders, Duxbury 2020 offered signature projects from 2019 through 2022 that include the following:

• Alden House Historic Site – expansion of visitor programs including self-guided Pilgrim historic site tour of Duxbury, exhibit of 17th-century artifacts from the 1960’s dig at the Alden First Site, acquisition of the Warwick Bradford Patent, Pilgrim authors gallery and Zoom talks, and Native American programs

• April 27, 2019 Kick-off Benefit & Auction at the Duxbury Bay Maritime School featuring live and silent auctions to generate funding for 2020 book concept and development

• Green’s Harbor Path – town-wide civic sponsors designed signage for a section of the Green’s Harbor Path in Duxbury with a new trailhead built by the Boy Scouts with access from the parking lot at First Parish Church. Green’s Harbor Path was the first engineered highway in America linking Plymouth to Marshfield and points north.

• Samson Archeological Dig – funded by the Samson Kindred as an “on site” dig to determine location of original Samson homestead along Duxburrow Path

• Ancestor Sunday – sponsored with the Duxbury Interfaith Council on November 26, 2020 to recognize the Mayflower’s scouting party’s arrival to Clark’s Island that included church sermons and Village bell ringing

• Commemorative Publication “Duxbury – Our Pilgrim Story” – 13 professional and amateur historians developed a 200+ page essay collection about early Duxbury, published by the Alden House Historic Site, Duxbury Rural & Historical Society, and Duxbury 2020.

• Partnership with the Duxbury Historical Commission on site improvements to the Monument and State Park
