We are working in concert So, in addition to all the yearly Alden Kindred responsibilities with Plymouth 400, Duxbury 2020, Pilgrim Hall, and of running our National Historic Landmark, in 2019 we the other Mayflower families to make certain that2020 will be seeking the generous support of all Alden Kindred and beyond is a huge success. We have been asked to be members, foundations, corporate support, legacies, and the 2020 Visitors center for the Town of Duxbury. We are major gifts. It is a big undertaking, but we are approaching pleased to say “yes”, fully realizing that it means we must be it with the energy, perseverance, and determination that open year -round, increase our footprint to accommodate John and used to create this country and an onslaught of visitors, enhance our programs of living their lasting legacy. Grit and passion for our heritage will history, and have the house and grounds fully functional. lead the way. I invite all of you to join this journey that began 400 years ago. Toward that end, the Board has gone through a lengthy process to analyze where we are and where we want to be. Using a Harvard University model of “Getting from No Longer …. to Not Yet”, we have taken a serious look at our VALUE as a National Historic Landmark, our SUPPORT now and how it can grow, and our CAPACITY to handle 2020 needs and beyond. These three tenants make up the legs of our stool, and all must be equally sturdy to support our Kindred. Since then, a small vision taskforce was formed to determine how we move forward. Thanks to Alden Keyser (Chair), John W. Alden, Russell Rockwell, Patrick Browne, Carolyn Bingham, Anne Cobuzzi, Jeff Dowling, Alden “Rink” Ringquist, Desiree and myself, this group met monthly throughout this year. They conducted a feasibility study by calling Kindred members from all around the country to determine their interest in our new role in 2020. The results were positive. All feel that2020 , with the Alden House Historic Site playing a key role, is exciting and a catalyst for action. The respondents unanimously supported the Preservation of our historic assets, especially the House. Sincerely, Keeping the history of the Aldens and other Pilgrims alive and accurate was very important. Genealogy, tracing our heritages, had strong support as well. Therefore, the Board of Directors at its June2018 meeting voted unanimously to take the next giant step towards a Capital Campaign and enter into a “Quiet Phase” where we will seek Pauline Ryder Kezer out Kindred members and ask for their financial support. President, Alden Kindred of America, Inc.

August 5, 2017 Annual Meeting: 10:00 AM - 11:56 AM The117 th Alden Kindred of America Reunion and Annual Meeting was held on August 5, 2017, on the historic grounds of the John and Priscilla Alden house. A partly sunny day with a gentle breeze greeted Alden cousins and guests as they descended under the large white tent. Silent Auction items were available, as well as the new Christmas ornament (for sale on our website). A Coopering demonstration was held later in the afternoon, as well as an Archeology presentation from Carolyn Gardiner from UMass Boston. Dr. Reverend Peter J. Smith gave the opening blessing. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lily Campbell, the granddaughter of Gary and Flo Campbell. The bell was rung by Pauline Kezer, President of the Alden Kindred of America, at10:41 AM. Pauline Kezer then called the meeting to order at 10:41 AM with an official bang of the gavel. Vote on 2016 Annual Meeting Minutes: Pauline R. Kezer. Pauline K. asked for a motion to accept the minutes from the 116th Annual Meeting. Alden Ringquist made the motion and John Towle seconded it. The motion was carried unanimously.

Director’s Report: Desiree E. Mobed Desiree M. echoed Pauline’s wonderful welcome to all in attendance, and she gave an overview of the past year of “Bringing History to Life.” She spoke of honoring the Alden legacy by working on the expansion of the 97 Alden property, and she encouraged attendees to look at the property and think about how to improve the visitor’s experience. Another focus of hers is to create a year-round experience for visitors. Desiree M. thanked Tristan Dowling for interpretative signage to the ‘first site’ foundation, which was his Eagle Scout Project. Desiree M. explained that the kitchen gardens were expanded with the help of Jeanette MacKenzie. She also reviewed the various educational outreach programs held at the Alden House. The Speak for Thyself awards banquet was another great success this year. Visitor attendance to the Alden House was up 25%, and many activities were held in concert with the town of Duxbury. The Alden House will be the visitor center for 2020 festivities. Desiree M. closed with sincere thanks to Alden staff, volunteers, and friends (refer to director’s report, 2017).

Report of the Finance Committee: J. Alden Keyser, Jr. Alden K. reviewed the financial report and discussed the statement of position, which is condensed: the FY16 and FY17 numbers are close, but there’s a lot going on, such as our goal of increasing contributions and grants each year. Of note, the Annual Fund was $29K. Alden K. remarked that we are stable and in good financial health: cash position is stable and endowments have increased. He explained that we hold a note payable to Rockland Trust for 97 Alden Street—we acquired the adjoining property, which is part of the original homestead, to double the size of the AKA lands. In summary, Alden K. is very happy with the condition of the AKA (refer to finance report, 2017). J. Alden Keyser asked for a motion to accept the minutes from the Finance Report. made the motion and it was seconded. The motion was carried unanimously.

5 Alden Kindred of America 2017 - 2018 Annual Report 117th Meeting Minutes

Report of the Education/Scholarship Committee: Linda J. Osborne Two Dr. Donnell B. Young Scholarships were given this year to very deserving recipients. Linda O. read grateful notes from Sophia Konieczka who will be going to Park University and David Lau from Provo, Utah. Our Duxbury High School scholarship went to Adam Cairo (refer to scholarship report, 2017). Linda O. asked for a motion to accept the minutes from the Scholarship Report. John Alden made the motion and Alden Ringquist seconded it. The motion was carried unanimously.

Genealogy Report: Lilly Cleveland Lilly C. reported that we’ve had a very productive year —processing 54 lineage applications—and thanked intern Wesley Pattison for his help in organizing and cataloging genealogy reports. Lilly C. is always pleased to answer questions for those researching their lineage to John Alden, so please be in touch. Pauline K. thanked Lilly C. for her unique genealogical talents that are the very important foundation of the AKA (refer to genealogy report, 2017).

Report of the Membership Committee: Gary J. Campbell Next, Gary C. reported that AKA now has 1,982 total members and 1,612 billable members, with 502 life members. The increase in membership was136 , which was significant considering there were no membership promotions. Work is at hand to collect annual membership dues, and Adryn Sumner has agreed to help with this endeavor—she manages the Facebook page of John and Priscilla Alden. Gary C. noted that the last Board meeting found much discussion and debate about increasing dues and lineage fees by a modest amount, as future plans for the property and the barn are in the planning stages. Next April 18, the barn will be 20 years old, and the Board has recognized that we’ve outgrown it. Pauline K. mentioned the many ways in which members can give to the AKA—Amazon’s Smile program and easy monthly bank deductions, for example (refer to membership report, 2017).

Film Report: Terry Reiber Terry R. discussed the progress made on a ten-to twenty-minute film that will allow visitors to orient themselves to the house and grounds before entering the site. The film committee works with the local PAC TV station, and Terry R. is working on the first draft of the script. This film represents a tremendous opportunity for all to see John and Priscilla come to life—sharing their stories of overcoming extreme difficulties as they become the first family of America. Terry R. expects to finish the script this summer/fall and looks forward to a grant for next year.

Director’s Message

“This is the place you come to experience real history. There’s nothing like being able to walk on the actual spot where your ancestors lived. It’s powerful and inspiring.” – Alden Visitor 2018

Dear Alden Kindred and Friends, In my third year as director, I continue to enjoy the sense of family shared with me by Alden relations from around the world and the appreciation by visitors for the historic significance of the property and the importance of the Alden’s role in the founding of America. I am also pleased to report that we are tracking steadily forward to achieve the goals established in AKA’s strategic plan.

With support from Duxbury Community Preservation funds and a very generous gift from Alden & Ginny Keyser, the museum entryway has been replaced with a new oak landing and improved drainage to carry storm water away from the house and prevent moisture and rot issues. The project was carried out by Jamie MacNab of Tinkertown Construction with guidance from architect William Thayer. Follow-on work involves replacing the gutters and downspouts and repairing the cellar entrance to promote ventilation. This will be funded from operating revenues.

The reformed Building & Grounds committee also identified additional preservation priorities. This year’s goals are to repair, repaint, and remediate lead paint on exterior window frames and to investigate the extent of ceiling damage in 105 Alden cottage caused by water intrusion around chimney

We have identified conservation needs of key collection artifacts and sought estimates for these projects. Funding from the Rockwell Foundation allowed us to have the 19th century violin that is on display in the house to be professionally cleaned and repaired. After the violin, the top priority is conservation of “Aunt Polly’s” bodice. If you would like to help fund this effort, please let us know. Generous donations by the Keysers and others provided funds to purchase a 17th century copy of the Warwick-Bradford Patent that mentions John Alden and his growing leadership in Plymouth Colony. It will be digitized for display in the museum and stored in the archives.

The museum has been working with the University of Massachusetts Boston archaeology program to reexamine artifacts recovered from the 1960 dig at the Alden “First Site”. A new exhibit of these items is planned for the 400th anniversary and will open in late 2018. Work continues on clearing the 97 Alden site of diseased trees and debris in order to create a spacious shaded area that can be used for events, thanks to funding from the Rockwell Foundation. Last year’s Haunted House featured a new maze for young children in the recently cleared space. The Rockwell Foundation grant also allowed us to expand the heirloom “teaching” gardens around the museum and reconstruct the well sweep with the help of Duxbury Boy Scout Troop #62. Many visitors have remarked on the dramatic effect the improved landscaping has had on the property.

9 Alden Kindred of America 2017 - 2018 Annual Report Director’s Message

In “bringing history to life” visitors are connected to the past with tangible and memorable experiences. Highlights of this year’s programs included an American Revolution living history day that featured Judah Alden’s historic regiment; a 17th century “beere making” demonstration; “Sheep & Shawl” day; and a Kid’s Colonial Camp. The Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati and Duxbury Cultural Council generously supported these programs. General visitation was up over last year while admission fees are consistent with last year.

AKA is a key partner in Plymouth 400’s Mayflower Legacy Trail initiative. This collaboration of authentic Pilgrim/ Native American sites from Provincetown to Boston will engage visitors using digital technology. Augmented reality will help them see places in 17th century context while they explore the contemporary physical sites. Artifacts and the record of these iconic settings and their pivotal roles in American history will be physically and digitally accessible. A grant from the National Endowment for Humanities has been requested to support this effort.

The museum is working closely with Duxbury 2020 to plan 400th anniversary programs and events. Now officially designated as the town’s visitor center, Alden House has embraced this once-in-a-lifetime anniversary as the opportunity to share Duxbury’s Pilgrim legacy with a new generation. Other commemoration projects include a book of essays by local historians, orientation film at Alden House, marking of Pilgrim trails, Samson site archaeology dig, lighting of Standish monument and a re-dedication event.

Thank you for your continued support.

Respectfully submitted, Desiree E. Mobed, Executive Director

Speak for Thyself

“Archly the Maiden smiled, and, with eyes overrunning with laughter, Said in a tremulous voice, “Why don’t you speak for thyself, John?” The Courtship of Miles Standish, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow,1858

On a beautiful evening in June, against the backdrop of picturesque Duxbury Bay, the Alden Kindred held its Annual Speak For Thyself Awards Dinner to honor four outstanding women whose “trailblazing spirit” in business, nursing, local history, and photography has made a difference in their communities.

Now in its 12th year, this signature event connects the present with the past by recognizing exceptional women in the spirit of Mayflower Pilgrim Priscilla Mullins Alden.

“This award is about women who are working in the community, providing services, and active in services they are passionate about,” added another recipient Renee McInnes. Renee brings a life-long passion of caring for others to her role as CEO of Norwell Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice and also serves on the board of the South Shore Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s important to be able to have that power in your voice and to make a difference in this world helping others to make themselves better,” noted one of this year’s recipients, Nancy Capistran. Nancy overcame personal adversity to become founder and CEO of Capistran Leadership where she is a sought-after leadership coach and inspirational speaker.

2017 AKA Annual Report FINAL.indd 14 7/26/17 9:14 PM 2017 AKA Annual Report FINAL.indd 14 7/26/17 9:14 PM Genealogy

Greetings to everyone! Things are getting exciting for2020 , the 400th anniversary of the landing of the ship Mayflower on which our ancestors sailed and survived.

We received 97 lineage program requests during Fiscal Year 2017-18. I researched and verified39 completed folders. Lineage applicants are required to submit documentation on each generation. I coach them on what materials to send in to complete their folders. Most are new to genealogy and building a folder is very time consuming and confusing. The minority finish right away, some take years and some do not finish.

Applicants collect and send in a long form birth and marriage certificates showing their relationship to their parents and/or their married name. Then they send in birth, marriage and death certificates for each generation back as far as they can go. This involves calling the city/town where the event took place and ordering the certificates. This is a daunting realization but is enjoyable if you know where to look. I keep active folders for everyone who has applied and there is basically no time limit.

I offer genealogical research assistance to those who apply. This is a unique service, which I enjoy.

The new wave of DNA test evidence is also creating more demand for lineage verification of the new birth family. I am continually astonished by new relationships proven by DNA studies combined with social media available on line. It is rewarding working with people who discover they are related to a Pilgrim family.

Lineage members receive signed lineage papers and Certificate with gold seal and ribbon. The Our Alden Certificate is very attractive and has no equal. Members will continue to receive this when verified. In addition, we offer a second certificate in our Gift Shop. The lovely, large format Certificate features Victorian era scrolls and line drawing of the ship Mayflower. Each one is professionally printed with the names of all the men and women in the line back to John Alden and Priscilla Mullins Alden. It is stunning.

The Alden Kindred of America is a well-known and very prestigious lineage society. As such, applicants hear about us and want to apply to prove their line back to John and Priscilla in particular. We are very proud of this fine reputation.

On a personal note, I have joined 9 lineage societies and was recently accepted by the Society of the Descendants of the Colonial Clergy for proving my relationship to Richard Bourne. Along with John Eliot and Daniel Gookin, they worked together as missionaries to the Native Americans. They phonetically translated the Bible. This book is credited by historians with saving the Algonquin language.

It is a pleasure to serve the Alden Kindred of America.

Respectfully submitted, Lilly Cleveland, Genealogist

21 Alden Kindred of America 2017 - 2018 Annual Report Scholarship Report

“My pride in being an Alden can be greatly attributed to John Alden’s actions and character during his lifespan. He not only made the courageous decision to stay in a new world and raise a family, but he built his own house and founded a town that proudly stands today, despite being just a cooper and a tradesman. Surviving brutal winters and assimilating to a completely unknown land and people takes a strong, gutted, decisive and intelligent individual. John Alden will forever act an inspiration for me.” Eric Sultini. “To be an Alden…is to be hope, because in the face of loss, John and Priscilla did not lose hope…it is to be family, to find unity in those closest to you, and to lift up those who are broken…it is to have strength in the face of adversity…it is to have belief that even in the face of the impossible, the circumstances that will result will be for the better…” Katie Gosman

The scholarship committee received three applications this year, from Massachusetts, Indiana and Connecticut. After careful review and with the support the Alden Kindred Board of Directors, the Finance Committee and our generous Alden members, we are pleased to announce that we are awarding two $1,000 scholarships in 2018 for the Dr. Donnell B. Young Scholarship. The first recipient is Katie Gosman of Madison, Indiana, a descendant of Ruth. Katie earned all A’s & B’s in high school. She participated in volleyball, theater, archery, Environmental Club, and Book Club. She was also a member of the National Honor Society (NHS) and a page at the local library. Her community service included volunteering as a summer missionary for the Child Evangelism Fellowship and at Vacation Bible School for her church. As a member of NHS, she participated in several community projects in her town. Katie will be attending Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio. The second recipient is Eric Sultini, of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, a descendant of Jonathan. Eric also earned all A’s and B’s on his transcript. He ran cross county, indoor and outdoor track. He was also a writer for “The Rambler” school newspaper and broadcaster for the student news program. Eric helped with fundraising for Amnesty International and volunteered with the school’s Ecology Club. He was a member of the Interact Community Service Club which partnered with Rotary Club fundraising for local causes. Eric also mentored middle school runners, did service work for a local state senator and volunteered at the Alden Haunted House. Eric will attend Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Our John and Priscilla Alden Scholarship for $500 is given annually to a Duxbury High School student interested in studying a trade or majoring in history. This year’s winner is Will Kelso, son on Duxbury’s town historian Tony Kelso. Will plans to attend Fordham University with the hope of eventually becoming a New York City fireman. Funding for the scholarships has been made possible from donations by members of the Alden Kindred. If you are interested in learning more about the scholarship program, please contact Linda Osborne at [email protected].
