My friend and I left Aberdeen with, the 8.5 a.m. train on New-Year's Day, and in due course arrived at Pitcaple. We spent little time in the vicinity of the station, for there was nothing very attractive—everything appeared to be wrapt in slumber. We were at the Maiden Stane and into the Woods of Pittodrie in a comparatively short time, the morning wind making our ears tingle. But what a refreshing and invigorating effect it had as compared with what we had felt in the city! We had not gone far up the hill road when snow began to make its appearance, at first in little patches; but very soon we found that the road was practically snowed up, while here and there the snow had been blown into beautiful, fantastic shapes. The surface of the snow was, on the whole, quite hard, but occasionally we found our- selves on a soft bit, where we floundered, sometimes disappearing almost out of sight, until we got on to the hard snow again. On arriving at the Oxen Craig we had a remarkably good view in some dii'ections; the hills to the north were white from top to bottom.

    On the March with the Romans Roman campaigns to conquer all of Caledonia (Scotland) were conducted between the 1st and 3rd centuries A.D. by the Governor of Britannia, Gnaeus Julius Agricola and Emperors Lucius Aurelius Commodus and Septimius Severus. There were large camps across Scotland and one beside Stonehaven (Raedykes) and one near Inverness (Cawdor) were linked by roads incorporating marching camps, where the troops would rest between transits. On the main trunk routes between Keith and Stonehaven, there are 6 of these Roman marching camps close by the A96 and A90. Unfortunately, there is not much left to see now but if you’re driving between Inverness and Stonehaven on the A96 to the Craibstone junction and thence south on Southern Leg and then Fastlink of the AWPR before meeting the A92 at Stonehaven, you will be travelling not too far from the route taken by the Romans, marching to invade the northernmost parts of Caledonia, more than 1800 years ago. The tents show approximate positions on the map details shown below. Muiryfold: OS ref: NJ 489 520; 5km east of Keith There are little traces of the 100 acres marching camp here, some 5 km from Keith. The camp was used during the campaign by Emperor Severus who reached as far as the Moray Firth in his campaign to conquer all of Caledonia. Ythan Wells or Glenmaillan: OS ref: NJ 655 382 5½ km north of the Kirkton of Culsalmond A96 junction with the A920 to Oldmeldrum. There are traces of 2 marching camps 2km east of Ythanwells.

    Aberdeenshire Council - Local Landscape Designations Review report by LUC 1 Cliffs of the North and South East Coasts RANKED CRITERIA Typicality / Representativeness High Narrow coastal strip between Cullen and Fraserburgh, and south of Peterhead, comprising a diverse landscape of sandy beaches and dunes, as well as rocky headlands and sheer cliffs. Rarity / Uniqueness Medium Coastal cliffs are similarly found on the east coast of Aberdeenshire, south of Peterhead, but those on the north coast are more cohesive and form a defined edge to the headland. Intactness and condition Medium Trees and woodland are limited in this windswept landscape. Fields are enclosed by hedgerows and stone dykes, with large farm buildings. Coastal villages are intact. Wildness Medium Accessible and well settled, but dominated by the influence of the sea and the elements, lending the landscape qualities of greater wildness. Scenic qualities High Although narrow, this landscape feels open and large scale due to the influence of the sea and sky, with high headlands, sheer cliffs, narrow inlets, occasional sandy bays and attractive villages. Enjoyment High A popular destination, with tourist accommodation in fishing villages and caravan parks. Accessible via coastal walks and NCN 1, which runs between Cullen and Banff before heading inland. Built heritage assets High Traditional fishing villages constructed in local stone, many of which are Conservation Areas eg Sandend, Portsoy, Banff, Gardenstown, Crovie and Pennan. Several scheduled monuments including Pitsligo Castle (near Rosehearty), Dundarg Castle (NW of New Aberdour) and Castle of Findon (fort & castle south west of Gardenstown). Cultural qualities High Shipyards at Macduff. Slains Castle near Cruden Bay was said to give Bram Stoker the inspiration for Count Dracula's castle.

As before, it lists the parishes of the Church of Scotland and the congregations of the United Presbyterian Church (and its constituent denominations), the Free Church (1843–1900) and the United Free Church (1900–29) whose names have completely disappeared, largely as a consequence of union. This list is not intended to be ‘a comprehensive guide to readjustment in the Church of Scotland’. Its purpose is to assist those who are trying to identify the present-day successor of a former parish or congregation whose name is now wholly out of use and which can therefore no longer be easily traced. Where the former name has not disappeared completely, and the whereabouts of the former parish or congregation may therefore be easily established by reference to the name of some existing parish, the former name has not been included in this list. The characteristic form of the hills is flat-topped, with gentle slopes for the topmost 200 to 300 ft., then a rocky face of some 500 to 800 ft., and the remainder scree (Icelandic skritha = an accumulation of loose stones). These screes obscure the solid rock round the base of the hills. In all cases the ascent is diffi- cult, and on this map the Pyramid, De Geer Range, and Mount Jean are the only summits that can be reached with comparative ease. A series of soundings taken in Klaas Billen Bay and a large-scale survey of Bjona Haven, together with soundings taken in Storfjordr have been handed to the Hydrographic Department of the Admiralty for use on the next edition of the Spitsbergen chart.
