Tea Party

The Mad Hatter Throws a Tea Party

by Paul Ruger On the afternoon of Thursday, January 14, the High School English department, led by the Mad Hatter, A.K.A Mrs. Crowther, held a tea party in true English fashion. Participants enjoyed a variety of English foods, while sipping English tea and watching the much- enjoyed Downton Abbey PBS show. There was pound cake, lemon curd, digestive biscuits, strawberries and cream, as well as sugar-free brownies. The latter were not of English origin, obviously, but w e r e e n j o y e d nonetheless. Mrs. Crowther arrived in f u l l c o s t u m e , complete with her h a t , w h i c h w a s another festivity of the afternoon: an English hat contest. While most of the students did not wear hats, the hats that were worn were most interesting! However, the prize for best hat went to Paul Ruger, who wore a hat adorned with pictures of Mrs. Crowther’s beloved character, Heathcliff, and hearts featuring Mrs. Crowther’s name. As a result, the hat was confiscated and is currently on display in Mrs. Crowther’s room. Several teachers also participated in the party, finding the afternoon rather enjoyable. When observing everybody present, it was clear that an enjoyable time was had by all! 1 The Quibbler February 1, 2016 Sport

Boys Varsity Basketball

by Andrew Hennessey

January 27th , there was a close game between Spa Catholic and Argyle Varsity Basketball. Argyle, who is ranked high in the state for class D was down 6. The Saints started out great also, while shutting down Arygle’s leading scorer Kobe Lufkin. However late in the first half, turnovers by the Saints led to Argyle baskets. At the end of the first half Saints were down 3. Kobe began hitting shots at the start of the second half, but the Saint’s offense kept up. The Saints began to get into some foul trouble with Terel Tillman and Evan Pescetti late in the 3rd into the 4th quarter. With a minute left, the Saints were down 4 but baskets were not falling. They fell to Argyle 65-60. Tyler Haraden was the leading scorer for the Saint’s with 17.

Boys JV Basketball

by Sean Englert

The Saratoga Central Catholic JV boys’ basketball team for the year 2015-2016 is one of the best that this school has had. The winning streak for the JV boys’ basketball team is 16-2. Leading the team in points is Marcus Davis, Ryan McFacdden, and Kaden Learch. In addition to having great players on offense, the defense this year is equally as talented. Sam Haraden’s height, measuring in at 6 foot 3, is a key factor on the court. He knows the post and his defense is one of the best on team. His partner in crime is Timmy Barrett, coming in at close to 6 foot 3 inches, they have each’s other back during the games and always read each other. Now for the ball handlers we have Marcus Davis, Aidan Dagestino, Ryan McFadden, Kaden Learch, Ben Scammell, Griffin Dae, Kyle Hennessey, and Nick Condry. I strongly believe the team has very strong ball handling and maybe even the best at the JV level in Section 2. We have very few turnovers during our games and we are sure to make it to the basket. We are a team that works very hard to be the best that we can, while having fun at it.

G i r l s V a r s i t y by Kristen Maher

The Saratoga Central Catholic girl’s team is having a successful season this year! They have a total of 10 wins and 7 losses. Captain, Emma VanDeCar is the leading scorer with an incredible 202 points, which includes 27 3-pointers. Chloe Ethier, also Captain, is second with 158 points and Ani Crocker is in third with 112 points. The team has the potential to make it far in sectionals this year. Their first crossover game is at Fulton Montgomery Community College on Tuesday at 4;30, come cheer them on!

Football Season

by Nate Smith

After 20 weeks of NFL Football the Super Bowl has been decided. The Denver Broncos will play against the Carolina Panthers on February 7th in Santa Clara, at Levi’s Stadium home of the San Francisco 49ers. The Broncos, led by veteran QB Peyton Manning, won the AFC title game against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. While Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers beat Larry Fitzgerald and the Arizona Cardinals to win the NFC title game. This is the second Super Bowl visit for the Broncos in the last 5 years, the last time they were there they got man-handled by the Seattle Seahawks in a 43-8 loss. For the Panthers, this is second time in franchise history, the first was in 2004 in Super Bowl 38 where they loss to New England 32-29. Peyton Manning looks forward to winning his 2nd Super Bowl for his NFL Legacy. If Cam Newton wins, he’ll join older Heisman winners to win a Super Bowl such as Roger Staubach and Jim Plunkett. The Denver Broncos started the season with Manning but suffered an injury in November. After Manning was on the IR list, QB Brock Osweiler led the team to a huge victory over the undefeated New England Patriots and was assumed to be Peyton’s replacement for the rest of the year. Eventually, Manning healed and returned for the final games of the season and the Playoffs. Manning’s stats on the year compose of 198 completions, 2249 yards passing, and 9 passing touchdowns. This season for Manning could be his last, will his possible final game bring another Super Bowl win under his belt or another Super Bowl loss from the Carolina Panthers led by Cam Newton? Cam Newton is known for many things around the sport of football. Cam started at The University of Florida where he was a teammate to Tim Tebow. After an off field incident he left to play football at Blinn Academy in Texas, a Junior College. After playing at Blinn he went on to play at Auburn University where he won the Heisman Trophy and a BCS National Championship. After playing in college he was drafted by the Carolina Panthers where he won Rookie of the Year and eventually led the team to a 15-1 record and a trip to Super Bowl 50. He is also known for “Dabbing” after each touchdown he scores. The “Dab” is a dance move that originates from the music group Migos from North Atlanta. Cam Newton has the chance to bring Carolina its first Super Bowl victory since joining the NFL as an expansion team in 1995. Cam Newton’s stats on the year consist of 296 completions, 3837 passing yards, and 35 passing touchdowns, as well as rushing for 636 yards. Both Manning and Newton have a chance to make history in SB50. For Manning, winning his second title and possibly last game of all time. For Newton, join the ranks of an elite QB to win the Heisman, National Championship, and a Super Bowl. On February 7th in Santa Clara we will find a victor between the two best teams in the NFL. Picks: Nate Smith: Carolina, Cadhan McFadden: Carolina, Hasher Nasir: Denver, Paul Ruger: Denver, Mrs. Crowther: Carolina, Mrs. Schmidt: Denver, Coach Lambert: Denver, Coach Simpson: Carolina

3 The Quibbler February 1, 2016 Mock Trial

Order in the Court…

by Michael Chille

The Mock Trial team is off to a great start this year, with the most dynamic group of students yet. Together they must face the task of understanding both sides of a very interesting case. The case revolves around 20 oxycodone tablets found in a suspect’s backyard that were taken without warrant. The students must argue both sides of whether or not these tablets can be admitted into evidence. The detectives argue that since it was about to rain, and it would have washed away the evidence this leads to the exigent circumstances exception to needing a warrant. Also the tablets were located next to a daycare center. The detectives argued they used the emergency doctrine to justify taking the tablets as well because the children could have gotten hurt so they had to act fast. The defendant argues that they had no right to search their property without a warrant.

The goal of the team involves conducting a mock trial. They must create direct and cross examinations, and opening and closing statements to be read in front of a real judge. Some students are lawyers and others are witnesses. The students involved are Michael Chille, who is a lawyer on both the people’s and the defense’s side and will be making the closing statements on both, Brandon Dreher is a defense lawyer and a prosecution witness, Coleman Perella is a defense witness, Garrett Quinn is a prosecution witness, he is one of the detectives, Ian Dorsey is a defense lawyer and is making the opening statements, Mary Clare Pikus is a prosecution, Madeline Bielefeld is a defense witness, Josh Van Patten is a prosecution attorney who will be making the opening statement on that side, Dean Martinez is a defense attorney, Kevin Cronin will be a defense witness, he is a playing the defendant, Kelly Roberts, and Wesleigh Dunn.

The teacher coach for the Mock Trial team is Ms. Izzo. The lawyer coaches who are essential to making the team as great as it is, are Mr. John Dormin Esq. , and Mr. Paul Pelagalli Esq. The coaches help keep the students on the right path while they study the case.

The SCC Mock Trial team is quite an impressive group this year with a lot of potential. The team last year beat their rival Augustine Classical Academy in the county finals, making them the county champs. They later moved onto sectionals. This year with the help of the new comers, the veterans are looking to continue the success the Mock Trial team has seen over the years. All we can say for sure is this year is looking to be a great year for the SCC Mock Trial team.

Paul’s Opinion: New Years

I must say, I’m rather happy this year so far. I’ve heard Movie Madness: Star Wars virtually nothing regarding New Year’s Resolutions, and there is virtually nothing that aggravates me more. The by Emma VanDeCar practical definition of a resolution is “a goal that is set that I will inevitably break in about 72 hours”. But because I don’t ((ATTENTION: SPOILER ALERT!!!!!)) like them, I won’t rant on about them. I’m just glad the American public realized that they’re a joke, when you actually think about it. That brings me to my second topic: saving money. This is something that you plan to do, and, On December 18, 2015, box office lines and despite the vast number of ways in which to do so, it often movie theaters were packed with eager Star Wars fans never gets accomplished. If you’re a student reading this, who couldn't wait to see the first installment of the new you’re probably saying to yourself, “Great! I never have any and exciting saga. The movie picks up 30 years after the money! Because I spend it all! So how can I save?” and your Empire had been destroyed, and a new wicked power has parents are probably saying, “Yes, darling, saving money is a emerged; the First Order. A group of fighters known as wonderful idea, that way I won’t have to feed you as much the Resistance fights back, with none other than Princess cash.” What have we learned thus far? Saving money sounds Leia at the head. With the help of many new characters, wondrous! Now let’s put it into practice. I have one two the Resistance attempts to defeat the First Order. words of advice: price matching. If you’re one of those Harrison Ford is back as Han Solo, and Chewbacca people who will go out and buy something just because you returns, making the unforgettable duo a powerful force in really want it, at any price, and then sit around looking at it the movie. Daisy Ridley, a British actress, stars as Rey, wondering why you just wasted all that money, this will help the new female hero in the story, and John Boyega, her control your spur-of-the-moment nature. And if you actually partner in crime in fighting against the New Order, stars want something, this will reward you. So let’s have an as Finn. Adam Driver stars as Kylo Ren, the antagonist example: I want to buy some fancy, really expensive Beats and leader in the First Order. Throughout the movie it is headphones. Not that I would ever purchase such an item, hinted that the force may be within Rey, and at the end, but it’s popular, so we’ll accept it and move on. The first she uses it to defeat Kylo Ren. However, it is unclear if place you look is Walmart. They’re $179.95. Wow! A pretty he is actually dead or survived the explosion of the First penny! Can we find them cheaper elsewhere? Scroll down Order’s deadliest weapon. R2-D2 and C3P0 are back, and and find the model number, in this case MH792AM/A, and at the end, we catch a glimpse of the Mark Hamill as the copy it to your clipboard. Let’s try two other retailers: missing and desperately needed Luke Skywalker. This Amazon and Staples. At Amazon, it’s the same price, but at movie sets up another Star Wars Saga that will be enjoyed Staples, it’s a whopping $299.95. That’s $120 difference. So for years to come. where are we going to buy them? Why, Staples, of course! It’s the logical choice. Staples will price match at 100% Amazon or Walmart, but they also have their Staples Rewards program that will get you an additional up to 5% back. That another $9.00 off, technically. Not only that, but keep an eye on special promotions. For example, Staples is currently offering a 110% price match guarantee. So you actually only pay $167.95, then get $8.39 back in Rewards, bringing the total with tax less Rewards to $171.32. That’s $21.23 less than Amazon or Walmart! A great deal indeed. Now look at all that research you’ve just done. If you didn’t really want those headphones, you wouldn’t go through all that. So not only will you cut down on unnecessary purchases, you’ll save money in the process! And isn’t that what the Christian spirit is all about? 5 The Quibbler February 1, 2016 Artist of the Month: TĀLĀ

by Christina Watt

Genre: Electronic/Electronic Pop TĀLĀ is a producer/singer/songwriter from London. She started making music at an early age but what makes her unique is her awareness of other cultures that comes from her family. With a father from Iran who owned a Persian restaurant and family in Qatar, TĀLĀ remembers many different languages being spoken around the house when her father had his friends over. She was influenced by a wide aray of musicians like the Beatles and the Iranian singer Googoosh. Being exposed to different cultures eventually helped TĀLĀ find her style of music: a blend of Middle Eastern/Asian culture with a more modern approach. This style is demonstrated in her song “On My Own In Hua Hin” which turns an iPhone recording of a band at a friend's wedding in Thailand into a heated pop song made with T. Williams. Another great TĀLĀ song to listen to is “Wolfpack” which features the vocals of singer/songwriter BANKS. TĀLĀ's new EP, MALIKA, was released in October and if you're up for a unique sound you should give it a listen. Don't be put off by TĀLĀ's background or culture though, you'll find that although the themes and inspirations of her songs are a bit different the electronic and pop aspects of them make them very similar to the pop songs you're hearing now.

SELFIE king: Saint of the Month: Mr. Simpson Connor Farrington by Hanna Schneider

Due to tight deadline constraints from my editor I had to virtually interview Mr. Simpson via my fellow reporter Nate Smith. Mr. Simpson grew up in Sharon Springs NY. When he was a kid, he played sports for fun, did four wheeling, and snowmobiling. He played both soccer and basketball in high school and won a sectional championship in both. He attended the college of SUNY Brockport. Since Mr. Simpson teaches health in our school, I took the opportunity to ask him a question that has been on my mind for a while, “are twinkies healthy?” His response was, “absolutely not.” Oh well, I guess that I am still in search of a better answer. I also was curious to find out what his favorite part of coaching the boys varsity soccer team was, I was impressed with his answer of,”giving students the opportunity to succeed at school outside of academics.”Since he is into soccer, I asked him about the fledgling girls varsity soccer team and his prediction of its future progress. He said, “I had the pleasure of attending a couple of the girls soccer games. I thought the girls play extremely hard, play well together, and with that work ethic and a bigger commitment to soccer the program has a chance to have more success in the future.” As a current member of the team, I wholeheartedly agree with his assessment! In light of the recent pro tennis scandal I wondered if Mr. Simpson thought that could happen here at the SCC sports programs. As you might guess his response was a definite no! He elaborated “ sadly I believe gambling and fixing games happen in all sports across the world. It is a huge problem and I think that it is a huge embarrassment for the sport. Although they are not the first sport to be caught in this scandal, it is still sad knowing money runs athletics even at a pro level. I do not believe what happened in pro tennis can happen here at SCC. We coach with honor and respect to not only ourselves but to the community and our opponents.” Until next time everybody, stay warm and stay off the twinkies!6 The Quibbler February 1, 2016 ^2

The movie 'Joy' which is out in theaters currently, was a movie based on a real woman – . The actress portraying Joy in the film, none other than , is up for an Oscar in Best Actress for her performance in this movie. The film itself, taking place in the 1970's and 1980's, shows the life of Joy Mangano, inventor of the 'Miracle Mop'. Her family, having little faith in her, told her to give up many times, but she never did, and the movie showed all her ups and many many downs throughout her journey to patent the 'Miracle Mop'. But who was the real Joy Mangano? And how many truths about her life were portrayed accurately in the movie “Joy”? For those who have seen the movie, and are wondering this, here are the factual and the fictional aspects of the movie:

Fact: Joy got her start as an inventor in childhood by creating a fluorescent pet collar. Fiction: Joy didn't go to college to help her family through her parents' divorce. Fiction: Joy met her first husband, Tony, when he was performing as a musician, and had two kids with him. Fact: After their divorce, Joy and her husband, Tony, stayed close and he worked for her company. Fact: Joy launched the 'Miracle Mop' from her father's auto body workshop on .

This movie is a great movie to see for aspiring business men and women, and entrepreneurs because it shows the true hard work and sacrifices one has to make in order to make their ideas a reality. Joy was just one woman who had an idea, and ignored everyone who told her to give up. Now she's a millionaire and has over 100 patents, and is worth around $50 million. If you want to see how she did it, go see the movie 'Joy'!!

7 The Quibbler February 1, 2016 Middle School Story

by Paige Jersen

I live during an awful time, a time when I am supposedly less than my white brothers and sisters. For I am a slave, a very fortunate one though. I was lucky enough be sold to the same master as my two beautiful children, Emily and Joseph. I love my kids so much, and every night before I go to bed I say a prayer and thank God for me being with them. Unfortunately, my poor children must live as fatherless slaves. Yes, I am a single Mother. But, I am also a strong fighter. My two children are what light up my life and I am always very happy, or I was…

I knew our master, Madeline, had been sick for weeks, but I thought she was strong enough to hang on to life. Apparently not, she had died overnight, a peaceful death. She had said in her will that her slaves were to be resold immediately, which meant we were going to be resold at the next slave auction in three days! Our family had gotten lucky once, there was no way we would be sold to the same master for a second time. ... I have been thinking, perhaps there is a way. There have been many rumors of an underground railroad. It seems too be dangerous with all of the slave catchers. Would three days even be enough to escape? It would have to be if I wanted too see my children again. I should probably sleep on it, so I don’t make any rash decisions. . . . I wake up in a cold sweat. For I had not a nightmare, but an vision. in this vision my children are separated and we never see each other ever again. I could have foreseen this but I hoped That it wouldn’t actually happen, but my vision assured me that it would. We have to go to the underground railroad. I must tell my kids, but what. Certainly not the truth! No eight year olds could ever understand the hardships of this world. I know! I will simply tell them that we are going on an trip, and any questions of theirs will simply be brushed off. Well, here goes nothin’. “Emily! Joseph! Come here please!” “Yes Mom,” They shout in unison. And before you could snap you fingers, standing in front of me were my two perfect angels! “We are going on a little trip.” I say calmly. “Where?” “When?” “Why?” “How Long will we be gone?” The questions start rolling in like waves at high tide. But, like I said earlier I shall simply brush off any questions. I merely say,”We leave now, gather your things.” They walk upstairs slowly and reluctantly. “Get a move on,” I say,” we mustn't be late” This makes them hurry a little more. Please, please, please, let this have been the best choice. . . . My heart beats million times a minute. Don’t look, back just keep running to the basement like the lady told us to do. I did it! I made it to the trapdoor that leads to the basement, and I don’t think that the slave catchers saw me! Wait! Where are Emily and Joseph! They were right behind me! I hear screams, screams that belong to Emily and Joseph! They shout,“Momma where are you?!” I can’t shout or risk my own safety and come out! Rather two lost than three. Wait, what am I thinking! I can’t leave them here! But, it’s too late! I hear the cries get fainter and the door close! The basement seems to get smaller as my world shuts down. I can never forgive myself for what I have just done!

Who are the editors? “Sabrina and I {Paul} are the co-editors, but Mrs. Crowther does the final editing for the editions.” -Paul What does the Kaleidoscope consist of? “Short stories, poems, and pictures relating to on alternate societies, and poems” - Paul

When is the first edition coming out? “The first edition should be coming out in a week or two, as soon as we receive more art submissions.” -Paul What made you want to take on the SCC Kaleidoscope? “We were asked by Mr. O, on behalf of the faculty, to keep on Mary Brimmer’s legacy, who founded the publication last year. Who is featured in this first edition? “We have received many submissions from the entire school.” -Paul

How do you think the first edition has come along? “We’re almost done with the first edition, but we need some artwork!” –Sabrina What can we expect from the upcoming second edition? “The next edition will be about the life through someone else’s eyes.” –Sabrina Do you think the second edition will be as prosperous as the first? “Hopefully. We are wanting to get as many pieces as we got for the first edition, and maybe more. So the second edition will most likely go as good as the first.”

And that’s everything you need to know about the Kaleidoscope, make sure to check it our when it gets released!!

Your #1 Need for the Winter by Gabrielle Vuillaume For winter, boots are an obvious essential that you must have in your closet. There are three different brands that stand out to me specifically, which are Uggs, Hunter boots, and Timberlands. Ugg boots are a classic. Almost every girl owns a pair. They're comfortable, warm, and come in many different colors and styles. Two of their most popular styles are the classic short boot and tall boot, and the Bailey boot. Hunter boots are the new favorite, especially among teenage girls. They are your typical rainboot, and do great in snowy and wet weather. They also come in many different colors. I myself have a pair of black Hunters, and love them. Another boot that I highly recommend, are Timberland boots. These personally are my favorite, because they are waterproof, are extremely comfortable, and go with almost any outfit. They are essentially perfect for snowy weather. If you are looking for a new pair of boots, these are the boots that I highly recommend investing in, which definitely will not disappoint.

10 The Quibbler February 1, 2016 MLK by Cadhan McFadden This past Monday the 18th, most people were very excited. Most people look at Martin Luther King Day as just a free day off, but there is a lot of meaning behind it. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King Jr. was successful in his fight for racial equality and was considered to many as the “Father” of the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968 when he was only 39 years old. He was considered as a clergyman and often used God and passages from the Bible in his speeches to show how slavery violates rights. King is most famous for his “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963 during the March on Washington. He will also be known as the man who put a stop to segregation and showed to each of us how we are all equal inside. King will forever be known as one of the greatest orators in American history and he will go down to many as one of the most influential and truly good-hearted people to ever step on American soil.

by Emma VanDeCar

Many people are asking where is the snow? —and why has it been so warm? Even I missed the snowy weather at Christmas time, though I'm not complaining about its absence now. It turns out that its not because of a lack of snow itself, but because of the climatic cycle El Niño. It occurs when there is an usual increase in temperature in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The warm water can then effect the climate and weather by affecting jet streams and the paths of winter fronts. Its effects cause the warmer than usual weather and very unusual lack of snow. If this pattern keeps up, it is unlikely that we will get any measurable amount of snow this year. However, there was an abnormality in this cycle recently with the winter storm Juno hitting Washington D.C. and City pretty hard. At least the pandas at the Washington Zoo are enjoying the snow :)) Something interesting I also discovered is that while there is the unusual warmth of waters, there is also a colder climatic cycle that alternates with El Niño known as La Niña. When the pacific waters are colder than usual, the La Niña cycle is in effect and results in colder temperatures and possibly more snow in regions around the world. Seeing the trend in the weather pattern so far this year, I have a funny feeling the groundhog might see his shadow and get Spring on the road!
