Participants enjoyed a variety of English foods, while sipping English tea and watching the much- enjoyed Downton Abbey PBS show. There was pound cake, lemon curd, digestive biscuits, strawberries and cream, as well as sugar-free brownies. The latter were not of English origin, obviously, but w e r e e n j o y e d nonetheless. Mrs. Crowther arrived in f u l l c o s t u m e , complete with her h a t , w h i c h w a s another festivity of the afternoon: an English hat contest. While most of the students did not wear hats, the hats that were worn were most interesting! However, the prize for best hat went to Paul Ruger, who wore a hat adorned with pictures of Mrs. Crowther’s beloved character, Heathcliff, and hearts featuring Mrs. Crowther’s name. As a result, the hat was confiscated and is currently on display in Mrs. Crowther’s room. Several teachers also participated in the party, finding the afternoon rather enjoyable. When observing everybody present, it was clear that an enjoyable time was had by all! !1 The Quibbler February 1, 2016 Sport Boys Varsity Basketball by Andrew Hennessey January 27th , there was a close game between Spa Catholic and Argyle Varsity Basketball. Argyle, who is ranked high in the state for class D was down 6. The Saints started out great also, while shutting down Arygle’s leading scorer Kobe Lufkin. However late in the first half, turnovers by the Saints led to Argyle baskets. At the end of the first half Saints were down 3. Kobe began hitting shots at the start of the second half, but the Saint’s offense kept up. The Saints began to get into some foul trouble with Terel Tillman and Evan Pescetti late in the 3rd into the 4th quarter. With a minute left, the Saints were down 4 but baskets were not falling. They fell to Argyle 65-60. Tyler Haraden was the leading scorer for the Saint’s with 17. Boys JV Basketball by Sean Englert The Saratoga Central Catholic JV boys’ basketball team for the year 2015-2016 is one of the best that this school has had. The winning streak for the JV boys’ basketball team is 16-2. Leading the team in points is Marcus Davis, Ryan McFacdden, and Kaden Learch. In addition to having great players on offense, the defense this year is equally as talented. Sam Haraden’s height, measuring in at 6 foot 3, is a key factor on the court. He knows the post and his defense is one of the best on team. His partner in crime is Timmy Barrett, coming in at close to 6 foot 3 inches, they have each’s other back during the games and always read each other. Now for the ball handlers we have Marcus Davis, Aidan Dagestino, Ryan McFadden, Kaden Learch, Ben Scammell, Griffin Dae, Kyle Hennessey, and Nick Condry. I strongly believe the team has very strong ball handling and maybe even the best at the JV level in Section 2. We have very few turnovers during our games and we are sure to make it to the basket. We are a team that works very hard to be the best that we can, while having fun at it. G i r l s V a r s i t y by Kristen Maher The Saratoga Central Catholic girl’s team is having a successful season this year! They have a total of 10 wins and 7 losses. Captain, Emma VanDeCar is the leading scorer with an incredible 202 points, which includes 27 3-pointers. Chloe Ethier, also Captain, is second with 158 points and Ani Crocker is in third with 112 points. The team has the potential to make it far in sectionals this year. Their first crossover game is at Fulton Montgomery Community College on Tuesday at 4;30, come cheer them on! !2 The Quibbler February 1, 2016 Football Season by Nate Smith After 20 weeks of NFL Football the Super Bowl has been decided. The Denver Broncos will play against the Carolina Panthers on February 7th in Santa Clara, at Levi’s Stadium home of the San Francisco 49ers. The Broncos, led by veteran QB Peyton Manning, won the AFC title game against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. While Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers beat Larry Fitzgerald and the Arizona Cardinals to win the NFC title game. This is the second Super Bowl visit for the Broncos in the last 5 years, the last time they were there they got man-handled by the Seattle Seahawks in a 43-8 loss. For the Panthers, this is second time in franchise history, the first was in 2004 in Super Bowl 38 where they loss to New England 32-29. Peyton Manning looks forward to winning his 2nd Super Bowl for his NFL Legacy. If Cam Newton wins, he’ll join older Heisman winners to win a Super Bowl such as Roger Staubach and Jim Plunkett. The Denver Broncos started the season with Manning but suffered an injury in November. After Manning was on the IR list, QB Brock Osweiler led the team to a huge victory over the undefeated New England Patriots and was assumed to be Peyton’s replacement for the rest of the year. Eventually, Manning healed and returned for the final games of the season and the Playoffs. Manning’s stats on the year compose of 198 completions, 2249 yards passing, and 9 passing touchdowns. This season for Manning could be his last, will his possible final game bring another Super Bowl win under his belt or another Super Bowl loss from the Carolina Panthers led by Cam Newton? Cam Newton is known for many things around the sport of football. Cam started at The University of Florida where he was a teammate to Tim Tebow. After an off field incident he left to play football at Blinn Academy in Texas, a Junior College. After playing at Blinn he went on to play at Auburn University where he won the Heisman Trophy and a BCS National Championship. After playing in college he was drafted by the Carolina Panthers where he won Rookie of the Year and eventually led the team to a 15-1 record and a trip to Super Bowl 50. He is also known for “Dabbing” after each touchdown he scores. The “Dab” is a dance move that originates from the music group Migos from North Atlanta. Cam Newton has the chance to bring Carolina its first Super Bowl victory since joining the NFL as an expansion team in 1995. Cam Newton’s stats on the year consist of 296 completions, 3837 passing yards, and 35 passing touchdowns, as well as rushing for 636 yards. Both Manning and Newton have a chance to make history in SB50. For Manning, winning his second title and possibly last game of all time. For Newton, join the ranks of an elite QB to win the Heisman, National Championship, and a Super Bowl. On February 7th in Santa Clara we will find a victor between the two best teams in the NFL. Picks: Nate Smith: Carolina, Cadhan McFadden: Carolina, Hasher Nasir: Denver, Paul Ruger: Denver, Mrs. Crowther: Carolina, Mrs. Schmidt: Denver, Coach Lambert: Denver, Coach Simpson: Carolina !3 The Quibbler February 1, 2016 Mock Trial Order in the Court… by Michael Chille The Mock Trial team is off to a great start this year, with the most dynamic group of students yet. Together they must face the task of understanding both sides of a very interesting case. The case revolves around 20 oxycodone tablets found in a suspect’s backyard that were taken without warrant. The students must argue both sides of whether or not these tablets can be admitted into evidence. The detectives argue that since it was about to rain, and it would have washed away the evidence this leads to the exigent circumstances exception to needing a warrant. Also the tablets were located next to a daycare center. The detectives argued they used the emergency doctrine to justify taking the tablets as well because the children could have gotten hurt so they had to act fast. The defendant argues that they had no right to search their property without a warrant. The goal of the team involves conducting a mock trial. They must create direct and cross examinations, and opening and closing statements to be read in front of a real judge. Some students are lawyers and others are witnesses. The students involved are Michael Chille, who is a lawyer on both the people’s and the defense’s side and will be making the closing statements on both, Brandon Dreher is a defense lawyer and a prosecution witness, Coleman Perella is a defense witness, Garrett Quinn is a prosecution witness, he is one of the detectives, Ian Dorsey is a defense lawyer and is making the opening statements, Mary Clare Pikus is a prosecution, Madeline Bielefeld is a defense witness, Josh Van Patten is a prosecution attorney who will be making the opening statement on that side, Dean Martinez is a defense attorney, Kevin Cronin will be a defense witness, he is a playing the defendant, Kelly Roberts, and Wesleigh Dunn.
