Finally some warmer weather! May is a busy month from Mother’s Day to Memorial Day. May is also National Stroke Awareness Month & National Hypertension Awareness Month. Checking your blood pressure regularly helps keep you in tune with your body. Every month the Nashoba Nursing Service comes in the 2nd Thursday of the month for a blood pressure clinic. Your health is something to never be taken for granted or ignored. See your primary care for your yearly physical and talk to your doctor about your medications and why you take them ( and if there are any interactions between medications). Eye health is also very important. The American Society of Ophthalmology recommends that you check your vision yearly to see clearly. On Thursday, May 11 D’Ambrosio Eye Care will be offering FREE Vision, Glaucoma and Cataract Screening. This is more extensive than a typical eye chart exam. No Appointment needed. This May we will be offering a Pre-Diabetes class. It’s free and a great way to learn about a healthy lifestyle and some changes you may need to make to your diet to lead a healthier life. We hope to see you here! A heartfelt thank you to all of our Veterans for your service, past and present. For all who have given and sacrificed—we salute you! Please note: we will be closed May 29th in honor of Memorial Day, and there will be NO Senior Breakfast in May. I also want to take a moment to wish a Happy Mother’s day to all of our mothers at the Senior Center. Thank you for all you do! Happy Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 14. Remember, this is YOUR Senior Center. Stop by, join an activity or have a cup of coffee with friends. Thank you again for the warm welcome. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns or comments or you just want to say hello. Call us at 978-425-1390 or stop in. • MFA Thesis by Shani Richards
MAKE IT PLAIN MFA Thesis by Shani Richards 2 I am a black. I am a woman. I am a metalsmith. I am fascinated by the categories and labels into which people are placed. As necessary to organize our world, certain groups and labels operate within this hierarchy of race and class and thrive while others fail. I will explore in this paper how I feel this hierarchy was conceived. I work like a detective, searching to fill in the blanks of a history that excludes people that are given labels of particular race and class. This investigation relates to my interest in post colonial thought. In this paper I will explore the labels I carry and how they relate to my voice as an artist. I will go over the artists that influence my work and our commonalities. History plays an important role in my work so I will go over broom, mop, and hair to link it to my work and the present. I will explain how metalsmithing as a field and a methodology support my inquiry. Metalsmithing is considered to be a craft-based practice as opposed to a fine art. Traditionally, a metalsmith is someone who makes small objects or jewelry. Bound by a history of processes and craftsmanship, metalsmithing is one of the oldest trades. As a trade metalsmithing has focused on making useful items such as tools, weapons, jewelry and kitchenware. Handcrafted objects reflect a tradition a process that has been learned and passed down through the centuries. It is a skill completed by a hand with simple tools, working with natural materials from the earth.

Large film crew sets up at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem By John Castelluccio Staff Writer | Posted: Wednesday, April 8, 2015 10:10 pm Large film crew sets up at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem KEN YUSZKUS/Staff photoTents surround the windows of the Hawthorne Hotel, which are set up to block the daylight for the production of a movie at the hotel in Salem. SALEM — Something big was happening inside the Hawthorne Hotel Wednesday — but you’ll need to go to the movies later this year to find out exactly what it was. Big screen stars Jennifer Lawrence and Robert DeNiro were reportedly inside the Salem hotel to shoot a scene for an upcoming biographical drama based on the life of Joy Mangano, a single New York mom who invented the Miracle Mop. The film, called “Joy” or “Kay’s Baptism,” is due to hit theaters Christmas Day. Numerous production trailers were parked outside the hotel where the windows to the hotel ballroom were covered by black boxes. Crew members were seen walking in and out of the building with equipment. Hotel staff weren’t talking — saying they were under contractual obligations to not release any details about the production. Cid Swank, a spokesperson for 20th Century Fox, said it was a closed set and she couldn’t divulge any further details while filming is still underway, but indicated the crew would be working in Salem through Thursday at least. She also noted Bradley Cooper wasn’t part of the scenes shot in Salem. Onlookers outside the hotel Wednesday morning took to social media to share their photos and speculate on what was happening inside, including Congressman Seth Moulton.

  • Female Masculinity As Seen in Joy Movie a Graduating
FEMALE MASCULINITY AS SEEN IN JOY MOVIE A GRADUATING PAPER Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for Gaining the Bachelor Degree in English Literature By: RIZQI AULIAWATI PUTRI 14150019 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT FACULTY OF ADAB AND CULTURAL SCIENCES STATE ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA 2018 FEMALE MASCULINITY AS SEEN IN JOY MOVIE By: Rizqi Auliawati Putri ABSTRACT Joy is a movie that tells about the struggles of a single parent named Joy Mangano. As a single parent, she is firm and independent. Traditionally, men only own the nature of masculinity while women own the feminine nature, but in this movie the nature is exchanged. Joy, the heroine of this movie, has a feminine appearance, but she acts like a man. When she is with her family, she becomes feminine, but when she is in her business, she turns her personality into masculine. From that problem, this research aims to analyze how the masculinity in women’s body can be interchangeable. This study applied the qualitative method with the theory of female masculinity proposed by Judith Halberstam and R.W Connell that is designed to reveal and to explain the masculinity of Joy Mangano character in Joy movie. The researcher also uses movie theory to read the frames. The result of this analysis found that Joy Mangano character has masculinity in herself. This masculinity is not innate but nurture. Female masculinity in this research aims to show the equality between a woman and a man. The image of masculinity that sticks to Joy in this movie shows that she is powerful, independent, and dominant.
