Community Relations: Feedback Meetings Strengthening relations with communities

South Deep is constantly trying to improve relations with its host communities. One of the ways to build strong relationships is through monthly community meetings where up to 150 community members gather to raise their views and get feedback from the South Deep Gold Mine.

In these meetings, South Deep officials working in units such as Human Resource Development, Procurement, Community Development, Environmental Management, Business Development Centre make presentations on programmes intended for community members, achievements and issues affecting the communities.

In 2017 the communities of Kalbasfontein and Jachtfontein (23 March), Hillshaven (22 April) and Westonaria (25 May) were visited. Communities know that their views are encouraged and will be addressed. A help desk is set up for people to log issues that they are not comfortable raising during the meeting. The issues logged are looked into and feedback is given once the findings are ready. Issues raised are investigated by the Community Relations team, the complainant will be consulted kept informed until the issue is closed.

Making the Training for environment farming success The Gold Alliance continues to invest in the livelihoods of its mining communities through education and agriculture. Agri- fun Future Cooperative, situated at the Donaldson Dam Farm is an Alliance project that has helped empower local people through agriculture. In the past two years, members of the cooperative had positive experiences, challenges and learned valuable lessons. Since 2015, Afri-grow provided mentorship and technical skills to members of the cooperative. The partnership with Afri-grow was a good move, as it encouraged community members who would not have taken a keen interest in farming to be committed towards making the cooperative a success. At the end of February 2017 Afri-grow handed over management of the cooperative to the members and the Alliance.
