There are several members from 1974 who are still with us on this ever evolving radio journey - who saw TDXC become BDXC and who helped Communication grow in size from three pages of typing to the 60 plus pages of news, logs, and photos that it is today- in print and in electronic format. Holding regular social events and meetings for members to discuss radio has also long been another part of the club’s success through the decades. Many DXers have passed through the various membership secretaries’ in-trays, and some have sadly passed on. But the success of the BDXC is due to all members past present and future. Thanks to all those who have sent in messages of congratulation as we reach 40 years of BDXC. This special 40 th anniversary issue looks through members’ eyes at the DXing scene back in the 1970s, both on land and at sea. There is a healthy dose of nostalgia, looking back into the rich heritage of radio and the club itself. But as ever, we look at the present and the future too, with the latest news and events, logs and observations. It is very difficult to predict what might be written here in another 40 years; 2054 looks like a date from science fiction, but there will surely still be radio broadcasters out there, and DXers of the future, to listen, log and enthuse on our shared love of radio. And if that is not enough to keep you occupied, here is OTD with an opening comment which is typical of many: IAN BIGGAR writes to “say thanks to you and the team for doing such a fantastic job producing a first class read every month. Even though, like everyone else, I am now overloaded with information, it is almost a relief for that white envelope to drop through the door every month. I always find something of interest within those pages. Please try and resist the temptation to convert to an on-line version, although I know it would being many benefits in terms of producing the magazine. I sound like a technophobe, which I am not. I suppose there are just some traditional aspects that I hope will be preserved.” We have a few radio presenters in our midst and JULIAN WATSON tells us he “had some time today so I transferred the highlights of another TWR DX special - this one was from Saturday, 21st April 1984 at 2.30 pm. Compared with the previous recording [heard on BDXC Audio Circle] this one did have some reception dips - it was also the transfer over to BST from GMT. We also made a programme for May of that year - we sent it to Monte Carlo but it didn't go out as the Germans decided to pull funding for the 15 minutes of transmitter time. I think RMC charged about £300 - £500 per quarter hour at that stage. I believe Peter Hamm (the main presenter) is still about in Lewisham, although he left them when they moved out of London to Biggleswade - I'll have to knock on the door next time I'm in the capital to see if he kept any archives from the studio. As for me, I was just very young and somewhat in awe of being part of the radio experience in London, coming as I did from rural Wiltshire. I suppose it was my star turn on SW! I do remember having a very sore throat on that day of recording, and I noticed my voice slightly breaking at the end - just the adrenalin keeping me going... The show is about 11' long [it will feature on the September/October Audio Circle programme presented by Gary Drew]. Some buzzes were also due to the fact my parents had the TV going downstairs, which did have an effect on both the short wave and MW from Monaco. I've also attached pictures of the source tape, transfer process and the very Toshiba radio cassette mentioned in the programme. The old workhorse still plays radio great, but the cassette motor wore out a few years ago.” Unfortunately, the photographs would not reproduce clearly, but you can do the next best thing, and that is to listen to the September / October edition of the BDXC Audio Circle – details in the magazine next month but available before then on the BDXC Yahoo email group. Julian finishes by saying he remembers from an earlier edition of Communication there was a reference to a member called ANDY MARTINUYK from Moscow. If Andy would like an audio copy of a penpal request he made to Radio Luxembourg in 1990, please contact OTD. DAVID CRYSTAL writes from Israel and makes observations with regard to the Tecsun PL-360 and the Kaito KA1107 (pictured).

  • Hans Knot International Radio Report July/August 2017
Hans Knot International Radio Report July/August 2017 Welcome to another issue of the International Radio Report and like every summer it will be one for the month of July and August. Thanks for the many response on last issue as well as memories and photos have been sent in for this and further issues. Enjoy the report! Sadly we have to start with bad news. May the 30th the following sad news came in from Mark Sloane (Pat Hammerton) ‘Sorry to report Hans my dear chum David Gilbee, Dave Mackay, died this weekend. He and I met on Radio 390 and worked together on 355. He was also my brother in law, marrying my sister Lis.’ Dave MacKay Radio 355 Photo: collection Pirate Hall of Fame I’m very sorry to hear this sad news Pat. Of course you know him far much better than I do. I met him on a handful of occasions and was in contact with him by e-mail through the years. Of course he was on special Radio Reunions a few times in England where we met during the last 20 years. But our very first meeting was one, were we sometimes talked about. It was a very special day just after the official opening of Melody Radio in London. I was there for a special for our magazine and he told me all about the station, the style of presentation but above all how much of the music was transferred to a machine which was just put into the market. It was Dave who brought me to the idea to do the same with my vinyl collection.

  • Hans Knot International Radio Report December 2015 Welcome to This
Hans Knot International Radio Report December 2015 Welcome to this edition of the radio report and thanks for all the e mails with memories and more, which is most appreciated. Also this time there is a variety of subjects and so let’s start with the first one: Recently I was linked through to a message board where several people are exchanging memories and more. One of them was Terry Davis, which we know from offshore stations like Radio Atlantis and RNI. I added a memory by saying that Terry should also be remembered for his excellent ‘Beatles songs’ which were aired a lot on Radio Atlantis. Later he also worked together with Steve England in the jingle companies Tapetrix and Alfa Sounds. Well Terry sent some nice pictures from his Atlantis days in 1974. The first one is a photo from the bridge of the radioship, which was anchored in international waters off the Belgium coast in those days. The second one shows Steve England, Debbie and John Harding and a fourth person at the background which cannot be remembered by me. And finally here is a photo of the deck-hands Dean and Raffle, who were mentioned in the programs from the international service on Radio Atlantis. A regular in the report and friend since we met for the very first time in 1970 is Paul de Haan. On Saturdays I’m galley man - as I don’t want to name myself cook – on board the minesweeper ‘de Naarden’ in Delfzijl. Working there is also a machinist who was working with Dutch Marine in the seventies of last century.

  • The Dutch Radio Day
The Dutch Radio Day It was in 1978 that Mike Baron and Nick Oakly from Music Radio Promotions asked as few people from the Netherlands, including Hans Knot, to cooperate in a special event called Zeezenders 20, which was held at Noordwijkerhout. Inspired by the Zeezenders 20 happening Rob Olthof from Amsterdam suggested that he, along with Hans, could organise small meetings for offshore radio fans. He made a beginning with the so- called ‘Movie Afternoons’. It was the time when private videos arose and so those 8mm movies, made by offshore radio anoraks, were screened and some discussions were launched. In 1980, Hans Verbaan of the Free Radio Campaign joined in and a group of interested people got together in a small building in Scheveningen harbour on quite a regular basis. These movie afternoons sometimes took place twice a year and it came to a point that there were more people than available chairs. Therefore some bigger locations in cities like Amsterdam, Haarlem, Utrecht and again Amsterdam had to be found. In 1984, the first guests were interviewed including Simon Barrett, Juul Geleick and Tom Mulder. In the meantime, the organising team was growing with Piet Treffers and Tom de Munck joining in. From the late eighties, more people from abroad - most of all Germany and Belgium - attended the event each year. During the nineties, more and more deejays and technicians from former offshore radio stations visited the Radio Days to be interviewed. Our team had been joined by Jelle Boonstra, who did a marvellous job within the Radio Day organisation during a period of 15 years.

  • Hans Knot International Radio Report March 2013
Hans Knot International Radio Report March 2013 Dear radio friend another, although short, month has almost gone and so once again another issue of the report, from which I can tell you that already 30 pages were filled on February 7th, so sorry when your mail with memories is not included in this issue, lucky enough there will be more in the future. By the way, all issues way back to 2004 can be found at www.hansknot.com T-shirt time and it’s Don Stevens, who worked on a lot of radio stations, including the offshore ones: Caroline and the Voice of Peace. A photo shows the MV Mi Amigo and Don tells me it was taken after the Summer of 1978: ‘The T shirt 'times it' as these were only issued, in Tel Aviv, in the Summer of 1978, when Tony was working for me, after he and Abie fell out. Tony had a couple of these T shirts, which he wore to the gigs he did for me. More reflections, like the next one, were received: ‘Dear Hans, I think the person looking away to the right of Peter Chicago is Tony Allen. Kind regards Kevin (David Brown) Herman Content is really wonderful in providing me with links to interesting internet sites. This one will take you to the late hours. Really interesting: http://las-solanas.com/arsa/index.php ARSA — THE AIRHEADS RADIO SURVEY ARCHIVE Not just reliving the past, but more importantly preserving the past. Radio is unique in that, unlike other media forms, there is no easy access to old music radio shows.
