Bennett 28 April 2020 Words (Text): 4919 Words Quoted: 182 ABSTRACT This paper examines the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. On October 31, 1984, her Sikh bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, killed her in what was called an act of vengeance for the results of ongoing political tensions between Sikhs and Hindus. The main question that this paper poses is: what motivated Gandhi’s bodyguards to assassinate her and what was the impact? It is important to understand why she was killed as it reflects the issues that were going on in India. This paper argues that her bodyguards assassinated her as a result of political and religious grievances, and that her death led to much retaliation and bias against Sikhs. The paper explores Gandhi’s background as a political figure who sought for Indian autonomy and supported Indian nationalism. It also discusses the Sikhs within India, their religion and ideology, and their eventual desire to create their own nation which led to several Sikh rebellions that prompted Gandhi’s response and crackdown. She did not support their nationalism and thus ordered Operation Blue Star to take down the rebellion. The results of this were determined to be the event that inspired Satwant and Beant Singh to assassinate her, which intensified the hatred of Sikhs that was displayed through riots and the killings of them.

Ashok Vahie’s lense had captured the beginnings of a horrible sequence of events, a Kristallnacht of India’s Sikhs. On a wide and leafy British built New Delhi road, a terrified Sikh man is sitting, cross-legged while a group of men casually take turns in attacking him. Despite being a minority in India, Sikhs had climbed up the heights of Indian society with the help of their strong work ethic. To the wider Hindu community though, it was time they were cut down to size. Half a century earlier, another minority community, the Jews, faced similar challenges in Europe. Sikhs have a lot in common with the people of the Jewish faith. Both share an healthy and positive optimism in their attitude to life in the face of adversity. Both have faced centuries of persecution. The month of November has brought them together. In November 1938, a German embassy official, Ernst vom Rath, was assassinated by a Jewish teenager, Herschel Grynszpan, in revenge of the mass expulsion of his people to Poland.     Efforts to revive Sikh Militancy in Punjab The militancy in Punjab was comprehensively tackled by 1995. While India was greatly relieved by the end of militancy in Punjab, the restoration of normalcy in Punjab had upset the calculations of Pakistan‟s ISI and some western agencies and NGOs engaged in destabilization activities in India. These forces have ever since been making all possible efforts to revive militancy in Punjab by trying to rekindle the dormant feeling of hurt, anger and humiliation among the Sikhs caused by the Operation Blue Star of June 1984 and the anti-Sikh riots in Delhi in the aftermath of Indira Gandhi‟s assassination. It is because of such patronage from the foreign agencies that the Khalistanis who no longer have any base in Punjab, still manage to have some pockets of influence in countries like Canada, the UK, Germany and the USA. The fringe Sikh terror groups which still survive with the support of foreign agencies include the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), Khalistan Commando Force (KCF) and International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF). One of the most prominent such groups is Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), which is the oldest and most organized group. Nearly a hundred years later when the British were about to relinquish India they were negotiating with three parties; namely the Congress Party largely supported by Hindus, the Muslim League representing the Muslims and the Akali Dal representing the Sikhs. Before 1849, the Satluj was the boundary between the kingdom of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and other Sikh states, such as Patiala (the largest and most influential), Nabha and Jind, Kapurthala, Faridkot, Kulcheter, Kalsia, Buria, Malerkotla (a Muslim state under Sikh protection). Territory under Sikh rulers stretched from the Peshawar to the Jamuna. Those below the Satluj were known as the Cis-Satluj states. 3 In these pre-independence negotiations, the Akalis, led by Master Tara Singh, represented the Sikhs residing in the territory which had once been Ranjit Singh’s kingdom; Yadavindra Singh, Maharaja of Patiala, spoke for the Cis- Satluj states. Because the Sikh population was thinly dispersed all over these areas, the Sikhs felt it was not possible to carve out an entirely separate Sikh state and had allied themselves with the Congress whose policy proclaimed its commitment to the concept of unilingual states with a federal structure and assured the Sikhs that “no future Constitution would be acceptable to the Congress that did not give full satisfaction to the Sikhs.” Gandhi supplemented this assurance by saying: “I ask you to accept my word and the resolution of the Congress that it will not betray a single individual, much less a community ..
