Editorial This month sees the end of another year and heading towards the end of four years of this newsletter. This edition contains a piece on another rare plant community found in the Shellharbour area, a note on an interesting mini Oak species and the mystery weed is revealed. The term crosier is explained and there is a note on Bedfordia, a very large species in the Asteraceae. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL I wish all readers a happy and safe Christmas, whether in the bush, at the beach or around the barbeque. Perhaps you will find time to contribute a note to our newsletter. Lemon Bottlebrush
www.milazzoflora.it Lemon bottlebrush Melaleuca citrina, commonly known as common red, crimson or lemon bottlebrush, is a plant in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae and is endemic to New South Wales and Victoria in Australia. (Callistemon citrinus and Callistemon lanceolatus is an older name.) It is a hardy and adaptable species, common in its natural habitat. Its showy red flower spikes, present over most of the year in an ideal situation, account for its popularity. Melaleuca citrina is a shrub growing to 5 m (20 ft) tall but more usually in the range 1–3 m (3–10 ft) high and wide. The flowers are red and arranged in spikes on the ends of branches that continue to grow after flowering and sometimes also in the upper leaf axils. Melaleuca citrina occurs in near coastal areas of New South Wales, including the Blue Mountains and extends as far west as the Central Western Slopes. It also occurs in the east coast areas of Victoria and grows in swamps and along creeks and rivers. The cultivar Splendens, is a form with a compact and rounded habit, growing to about 4 metres high and wide. Their valuable therapeutic properties have stimulated a fruitful research activity addressed to the identification of the bioactive components of their extracts yielding a great diversity of terpenes; polyphenols; and other exclusive products. Among the latter, starting with the discovery of myrtucommulone A from myrtle (Myrtus communis), a series of structurally-related acylphloroglucinol compounds have been characterized from several species that represent the basic active principles to be considered in view of possible drug development. Aspects concerning chemical and biological properties of these products are reviewed in the present paper. OPEN Heredity (2013) 111, 23–33 & 2013 Macmillan Publishers Limited All rights reserved 0018-067X/13 www.nature.com/hdy ORIGINAL ARTICLE Dancing together and separate again: gymnosperms exhibit frequent changes of fundamental 5S and 35S rRNA gene (rDNA) organisation S Garcia1 and A Kovarˇı´k2 In higher eukaryotes, the 5S rRNA genes occur in tandem units and are arranged either separately (S-type arrangement) or linked to other repeated genes, in most cases to rDNA locus encoding 18S–5.8S–26S genes (L-type arrangement). Here we used Southern blot hybridisation, PCR and sequencing approaches to analyse genomic organisation of rRNA genes in all large gymnosperm groups, including Coniferales, Ginkgoales, Gnetales and Cycadales. The data are provided for 27 species (21 genera). The 5S units linked to the 35S rDNA units occur in some but not all Gnetales, Coniferales and in Ginkgo (B30% of the species analysed), while the remaining exhibit separate organisation. The linked 5S rRNA genes may occur as single-copy insertions or as short tandems embedded in the 26S–18S rDNA intergenic spacer (IGS). The 5S transcript may be encoded by the same (Ginkgo, Ephedra) or opposite (Podocarpus) DNA strand as the 18S–5.8S–26S genes. In addition, pseudogenised 5S copies were also found in some IGS types. Both L- and S-type units have been largely homogenised across the genomes. Phylogenetic relationships based on the comparison of 5S coding sequences suggest that the 5S genes independently inserted IGS at least three times in the course of gymnosperm evolution. Frequent transpositions and rearrangements of basic units indicate relatively relaxed selection pressures imposed on genomic organisation of 5S genes in plants. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. They are often used to symbolise the fragility and beauty of the natural world, and the urgency of moving to sustainable ways to live. Concepts such as human loss, growth, regeneration and renewal often use tree-like metaphors, and those responsible for the custodianship of woodlands, arboreta and botanical gardens are seen as guardians of a collective past, of the present and a hope for an increasingly uncertain future. This is further underscored by the recognition that the Earth’s forests are an important producer of oxygen and regulator of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and that large-scale deforestation has been an important factor in the long-term warming and cooling of the planet. The perceived role that woodlands play in so-called “ecosystem services” is now seen as an integral component of the survival and quality of life on earth. Important roles include flood mitigation, soil and water conservation, carbon capture, air quality in cities, protection of biological diversity of plants and wildlife and the mental and physical wellbeing of humanity. -

Th is review is a contribution to Melaleuca knowledge and describes fi ve important essential oil-producing species and two subspecies of Melaleuca in terms of their essential oil chemical composition, medicinal applications, and leaf morphoanatomy. Some relationships between essential oil composition of these species and important biological activities are presented. Useful parameters for the certifi cation of the essential oils are also highlighted.
