facebook.com/HeartOfTheHeatons @HeartOfTheHeatons 1 There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.

Margaret J. Wheatley Welcome to the second Heart of the Heatons, a festival to spread collective joy through arts, music and culture across the Heatons. In 2018, our inaugural year, we curated and created 55 events across 25 venues thanks to amazing performers, organisers, venues and all those who took part.

Some people have, quite rightly, asked: why on earth are we doing this festival? Sometimes we’ve asked ourselves the same question! We guess it comes down to this: there is so much that can divide us these days, we need to make sure we still connect, person to person. And, what better way to connect than to experience something together.

Many of the festival events have been created from scratch, not only by us, but by inspired individuals and fantastic community groups. Thank you to all of those that have taken the idea of the festival and have run with it; you are true community heroes!

We are also delighted to act as a loud platform to help publicise existing regular events, bringing them together as part of the festival, with some events enjoying a special Heart of the Heatons twist.

Finally, because we’ve not got enough on our plates, we’ve also launched three competitions this year – photography, poetry/flash fiction and a film awards. The closing dates for these is 20th September and there are awards for different age ranges. You do not need to be a professional to enter; just give it a try, you’ve nothing to lose – especially as it’s free!

We hope you find something to enjoy during the festival – and if not, we’re open to ideas for 2020!
