FOREWORD The Government of Kenya’s commitment to provide for children out of family care is demonstrated by the various policies and legislative frameworks that have been developed in the recent years. All children are equal rights-holders and deserve to be within families and community as enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and the Children Act 2001. The development of this training manual recognizes the role of the family and the community in the care of our children while the accompanying user friendly handbook aims to boost the skills and knowledge of case workers and practioners in the child protection sector. All efforts need to be made to support families to continue to care for their children and, if this is not possible, to place a child in a family-based alternative care arrangement, such as; kinship care, foster care, guardianship, Kafaalah, Supported Independent Living (SIL), or adoption. -

More often than not they are subjected to numerous violations ranging from attacks, murders, harassments, and infringement of their fundamental rights among many others. Kenya is not left behind, it is one of the countries that has become extremely unbearable for the EHRDs to survive in. In this regard, CJGEA came up with an initiative to empower EHRDs countrywide to ensure they are protected and feel secure when handling their work. This was also to ensure environmental protection and conservation work continues smoothly. For the past three years, EHRDs drawn from all over the country under the banner of CJGEA have been meeting annually for a workshop to deliberate on the issues that affect them and the work they do so as to better their work in protecting the environment. -

Improving Uptake of Family Planning Services in Western Kenya: Evaluation Findings and Key Learnings Clair Null With support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the “Reversing the Anitha Sivasankaran Stall in Fertility Decline in Western Kenya” project was launched in 2009 to counter Kimberly Smith stagnating and deteriorating reproductive health indicators in western Kenya.
