Always Offline also provides lower bandwidth usage because users are always working offline, even when they are connected through a high- speed network connection. In this document Prerequisites Enabling the Always Offline mode Prerequisites To enable the Always Offline mode, your environment must meet the following prerequisites. An Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) domain, with client computers joined to the domain. There are no forest or domain functional-level requirements or schema requirements. Client computers running Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2, or Windows Server 2012. (Client computers running earlier versions of Windows might continue to transition to Online mode on very high-speed network connections.) A computer with Group Policy Management installed. Enabling the Always Offline mode To enable the Always Offline mode, use Group Policy to enable the Configure slow-link mode policy setting and set the latency to 1 (millisecond). Doing so causes client computers running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 to automatically use the Always Offline mode. Note Computers running Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2008 might continue to transition to the Online mode if the latency of the network connection drops below one millisecond. -

OVERVIEW Backing up data is more important than ever, as data centers store larger volumes of information and organizations face various threats such as ransomware and other digital risks. Microsoft’s Resilient File System or ReFS offers a more robust solution than the old NT File System. In fact, Microsoft has stated that ReFS is the preferred data volume for Windows Server 2016. ReFS is an ideal solution for backup storage. By utilizing the ReFS BlockClone API, Veeam has developed Fast Clone, a fast, efficient storage backup solution. This solution offers organizations peace of mind through a more advanced approach to synthetic full backups. CONTEXT Rick Vanover discussed Microsoft’s Resilient File System (ReFS) and described how Veeam leverages this technology for its Fast Clone backup functionality. CHAPTER File-System 11 Implementation As we saw in Chapter 10, the ®le system provides the mechanism for on-line storage and access to ®le contents, including data and programs. The ®le system resides permanently on secondary storage, which is designed to hold a large amount of data permanently. This chapter is primarily concerned with issues surrounding ®le storage and access on the most common secondary-storage medium, the disk. We explore ways to structure ®le use, to allocate disk space, to recover freed space, to track the locations of data, and to interface other parts of the operating system to secondary storage. Performance issues are considered throughout the chapter. Bibliographical Notes The MS-DOS FAT system is explained in[Norton and Wilton (1988)]. The internals of the BSD UNIX system are covered in full in[McKusick and Neville- Neil (2005)]. Details concerning ®le systems for Linux can be found in[Love (2010)]. The Google ®le system is described in[Ghemawat et al. (2003)]. FUSE can be found at http://fuse.sourceforge.net. Log-structured ®le organizations for enhancing both performance and consistency are discussed in[Rosenblum and Ousterhout (1991)], [Seltzer et al. (1993)], and[Seltzer et al. (1995)]. Algorithms such as balanced trees (and much more) are covered by[Knuth (1998)] and [Cormen et al. (2009)].[Silvers (2000)] discusses implementing the page cache in the NetBSD operating system.
