Cellulose is also the most abundant organic polymer on earth. Cellulose digestion yields simple sugars that can be used to produce biofuels. Cellulose breaks down to form compounds like hemicelluloses and lignins that are useful in energy production. Industrial cellulolysis is a process that involves multiple acidic and thermal treatments that are harsh and intensive. -

Frisvad, [email protected] Abstract: Penicillium is a diverse genus occurring worldwide and its species play important roles as decomposers of organic materials and cause destructive rots in the food industry where they produce a wide range of mycotoxins. Other species are considered enzyme factories or are common indoor air allergens. Although DNA sequences are essential for robust identification of Penicillium species, there is currently no comprehensive, verified reference database for the genus. To coincide with the move to one fungus one name in the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants, the generic concept of Penicillium was re-defined to accommodate species from other genera, such as Chromocleista, Eladia, Eupenicillium, Torulomyces and Thysanophora, which together comprise a large monophyletic clade. -

The names of species in the genera that have been reported in Korea are listed in this study. Fourteen species of Aspergillus, 4 of Eurotium, 8 of Neosartorya, 47 of Penicillium, and 5 of Talaromyces were included in the National List of Species of Korea, Ascomycota in 2015. Based on the taxonomic system of single name nomenclature on ICN (International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants), Aspergillus and its teleomorphic genera such as Neosartorya, Eurotium, and Emericella were named as Aspergillus and Penicillium, and its teleomorphic genera such as Eupenicillium and Talaromyces were named as Penicillium (subgenera Aspergilloides, Furcatum, and Penicillium) and Talaromyces (subgenus Biverticillium) in this study. In total, 77 species were added and the revised list contains 55 spp. of Aspergillus, 82 of Penicillium, and 18 of Talaromyces. -
Analysis of Various Bioreactor Configurations for Heavy Metal Removal Using the Fungus Penicillium Ochro-Chloron

Cheetham, Head of Department Abstract Penicillium ochro-chloron (ATCC strain # 36741), a filamentous fungus with the capability for removing copper ions from aqueous solutions, was studied as a possible biological trap (biotrap) for remediation of heavy metal contaminants in industrial wastewaters. This research demonstrated that in shake flasks the fungus removed copper from surrogate wastewater with 100mg/L copper contamination by as much as 99%. These results did not translate to the bioreactor configuration of a packed bed column, as channeling occurred through the bed, shown by conductivity tracer studies. A fluidized bed configuration was studied and resulted in copper removal of 97%, with a capacity of 149 mg[Cu]/g dry weight biomass, under the conditions of 50% dissolved oxygen. For dissolved oxygen concentrations below the critical oxygen concentration for the fungus (20% saturation) there was minimal copper removal. Mixing studies in the fluidized bed reactor showed that the system was diffusion limited. Mathematical modeling using first order kinetics associated with diffusion limited reactions resulted in rate constants for Cu2+ uptake of approximately 0.031 h-1, which were dependent on the dissolved oxygen concentration. Modeling of the reaction with a second order kinetic equation showed that there are possibly factors regulating copper uptake besides oxygen. -

They are associated with food spoilage and mycotoxin production and can occur in the indoor environment, causing health hazards by the formation of β-glucans, mycotoxins and surface proteins. Some species are opportunistic pathogens, while others are exploited in biotechnology for the production of enzymes, antibiotics and other products. Penicillium belongs phylogenetically to Trichocomaceae and more than 250 species are currently accepted in this genus. In this study, we investigated the relationship of Penicillium to other genera of Trichocomaceae and studied in detail the phylogeny of the genus itself. In order to study these relationships, partial RPB1, RPB2 (RNA polymerase II genes), Tsr1 (putative ribosome biogenesis protein) and Cct8 (putative chaperonin complex component TCP-1) gene sequences were obtained. The Trichocomaceae are divided in three separate families: Aspergillaceae, Thermoascaceae and Trichocomaceae. The Aspergillaceae are characterised by the formation flask-shaped or cylindrical phialides, asci produced inside cleistothecia or surrounded by Hülle cells and mainly ascospores with a furrow or slit, while the Trichocomaceae are defined by the formation of lanceolate phialides, asci borne within a tuft or layer of loose hyphae and ascospores lacking a slit. -
