Th is is the origin of the word ‘salary’ which obviously we now receive in money when we are working. Th e importance of salt lay in its use to preserve food: a particularly important property in times when there was no access to refrigeration. Th e economic importance of salt was so signifi cant that governments used to impose ‘salt taxes’. Perhaps the most infamous of these was the one the British imposed in India. In a deeply signifi cant move to assert independence, Gandhi led a famous march to the sea in direct peaceful opposition to the British salt tax. On arrival at the sea, Gandhi and his followers broke the British law by making their own salt from seawater. Th e following is an extract from a report in the Guardian [a British newspaper] of 13 March 1930. At 6.30 yesterday morning ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi left Ahmedabad on foot at the head of a band of civil resistance volunteers on a 100-mile march to the sea at Jalalpur, on the Gulf of Cambay. He thus signalled the beginning of civil disobedience or non-violent defi ance of the British administration, and brought into action the new Congress policy of Purna Swaraj, or complete independence. Twenty seven regional offices & Four (04) Vigilance offices of the Board are functioning within the state at different locations to monitor and control the pollution sources from a shorter distance. 2. The Gujarat Pollution Control Board divided RO Kutch in to RO Kutch-West & RO Kutch-East to monitor and control the pollution sources from a shorter distance and also started the Laboratory at RO Kutch-West. 3. The Gujarat Pollution Control Board aims to develop all-round capabilities of the Board’s employees in the field of pollution prevention & control, Board induced more officers for the knowledge based training organized by CPCB, GPCB and other national and international organizations. 4. The Gujarat Pollution Control Board plays its role not merely as a regulator but off late, also developed a face as a facilitator. 5. In order to provide XGN system with ease to small & medium scale units (MSME), the Board has introduced avail free facility through Help Desk created at all Regional Offices including Head office. 6. Gujarat is leading in the country for the development of CETPs having total 31 operational CETPs with hydraulic capacity of approximately 556 MLD of serving approximately 5834 individual units.

    6.0 Activities of the Board, Objectives, Functions & Priorities 6.1 Objectives The major objectives of the Board are centred around the Pollution Control and the protection of the environmental quality. These are outlined as under: • Bring about all round improvement in the quality of the environment in the State by effective implementation of the laws. • Control of pollution at source to the maximum extent possible with due regard to technological achievement and economic viability as well as sensitivity of the receiving environment. This objective is being fulfilled through laying down the disposal standards as well as gaseous emission standards. • Identifications of sites and development of procedures and methods for the disposal of hazardous wastes. • Maximisation of re-use and re-cycle of sewage and trade effluent on land for irrigation and for industrial purpose after giving appropriate treatment and thereby economising and saving on the use of water. The practice also helps in stopping pollution of water due to reduction in discharges of waste into water bodies. • Minimisation of adverse effect of pollution by selecting suitable locations for the establishment of new industrial projects. • Co-ordination with other agencies of the State Government and local authorities to encourage the Common Effluent Treatment Plants and Treatment Stabilisation Disposal Facilities. • Close co-ordination and rapport with educational institutions, non government organisations, Industries Associations, Government organisations, etc. to create environmental
