MARY O'MAHONY ANAPPRECIATION

Mary O'Mahony, who died on January 11th last, was a much loved member of the Mallow, Ballincollig and Charleville business communities.

She was given a guard of honour by the Ballincollig Business Association (BBA) at her removal last Sunday.

Mary was a serial entrepreneur and an employment creator here in Ballincollig as well as Charleville and her home town of Mallow. She was very much the driving force of the BBA and ran its membership drives, awards schemes, christmas lighting, golf classics to name just some of her projects. She was also the first chairperson of the association and made a huge impact in the town by her humour and lovely joyful personality. On behalf of its membership, Ballincollig Business Association send its heartfelt condolonces to Mary's family and friends, her loyal staff, her customers and all who knew her. Ar deis Dé go raibh a anam usuail.

Footlights Youth Theatre, Blarney and surrounding areas, has now been in operation since 2009, and is a place for young people aged between 11 to 16 years to come and put their imagination into practice. The weekly workshops consists of lots of laughter, role playing and use of the imagination, as well as team work, writing and rehearsals of the yearly performance. This is a great, safe environment for your teenager to experiment and be themselves. Youth Theatre is also known to help to develop the young person and boost their confidence levels. It provides a place for them to meet new friends and to assert who they are. This is a great way to engage young people in a creative pursuit. Another fantastic aspect of Footlights Youth Theatre is that it is a great way for young people to express themselves, and gives them a platform to explore issues creatively. Footlights is a non commercial organisation and is run by a dedicated volunteer committee, made up of parents and the students who attend the workshops. The workshops are run weekly in the Blarney Community Centre (The Mills), and will be recommencing shortly in early January. If you are interested or think that your teenager might enjoy a taster session, please contact Fionn on 085 2402484 for further details. The area now extends well beyond Cork City and includes Ballincollig, Ovens, Tower, Blarney, your kitchen with Glanmire, Little Island, Glounthaune, , Monkstown, Ringaskiddy and Carrigaline. It is now an Offence to sell or distribute any coal, that is not in a sealed bag and marked “Smokeless Fuel”, anywhere in this extended ban area. It is also an Offence to burn such coal anywhere in this extended ban area. Banned coal is generally sold as “Premium” or “Polish” coal and it is illegal to burn it in the ban area. The ban on smoky coal first came into effect in Dublin in the 1980s and was extended to other towns and cities in subsequent years. It has led to huge improvements in air quality in the urban areas where it has been introduced. Medical experts estimate that this improvement in air quality has saved over 300 lives per annum in the Dublin area alone. It is quite literally a matter of life and death. Not only is smokeless coal better for the environment, it is also more cost effective. Smoky coal burns more quickly with increased heat loss through the chimney. Smokeless coal burns for longer and it works out to be about 20% more efficient and therefore 20% cheaper in the long run. Your local and family run providers of If you suspect that someone in the extended ban area may be selling, Kitchens, Bedroom, Office & Shop Displays distributing or burning smoky coal, please contact your Local Authority.

Blarney Castle Picture: Mike As usual December was pretty hectic in the gardens as well as English at home. There is a pressure to finish projects in time for Christmas, even though it will all still be there afterwards! Things went well in 2012 and we have achieved a great deal. We have added several new areas to the gardens. The new riverbank walk from the caves to the Horses Graveyard has proved very popular and we plan to extend this further in the New Year. A ‘Jungle’ Border is under development opposite the stable yard and a new waterfall is currently being installed in the Fern Garden. The Rock Close has seen some renovation, including a new hosta bed, clearance around the Fairy Glade and replanting of native ferns around the Druids Circle. Line of angels at the Berring's National School Nativity Play. Renovation of our arboretums is continuing and we have recently planted around 30 new rare varieties of trees. Another new area under development is our Himalayan Walk. This is the path from the Mansion down past the Lime Kiln to the Walled Garden. It was very overgrown and in need of TLC. We have cleared the banks and planted up with varieties of rhododendron, azaleas, magnolias and camellias which will create a real ‘wow’ factor in the spring. On the downside, we have recently discovered that our avenue of weeping Lime trees has been infected with Phytophthora, which is a microscopic, fungus-like organism that causes huge damage to the root systems of the trees. Like the Ash dieback it is spreading in our tree population and presents a very serious threat. We have consulted The Wise Men from the East, with the Department of Agriculture and may have to take the very played by Brian Dinan, Eoin Innkeepers in the Berring's NS drastic step of removing the whole avenue, as well as our newly Cunningham and Sean Lynch at production were Lucy Desmond, planted avenue further into the estate. At present we are looking at any other options, but if they have to come out then we plan to replant the avenues with a different tree species that is more resistant to phytophthora. Over the last few years we have started to look towards the environmental aspects of the estate, with particular attention to preserving and improving the native flora and fauna. This has resulted in the creation of our Irish Garden which aims to display some of our native plants and educate the visitors. We make it interesting by exploring the folklore surrounding many of these species but also send out the message of habitat conservation. Within the estate we have seen some changes in management practices and a shift to planting native species where possible. Over the next few years we plan to replace all the conifer woodland within the main Jack L. aka Jack Lukeman, crops up in the middle of the audience, estate with semi-native deciduous woodland. In addition we will also playing songs from "The 27 Club" at The Whitehorse Inn, be sowing native wildflowers, growing hay meadow, and setting Ballincollig Cork.
