AEROMANCY divination from the air and sky, particularly concentrating on cloud shapes, comets, and other phenomena not normally visible in the heavens. ALECTRYOMANCY is divination whereby a bird is allowed to pick corn grains from a circle of letters. A variation is to recite letters of the alphabet noting those at which a cock crows. ALEUROMANCY is divination using "fortune cookies"; answers to questions are rolled into balls of dough and once baked are chosen at random. -

‘A Great or Notorious Liar’: Katherine Harrison and her Neighbours, Wethersfield, Connecticut, 1668 – 1670 Liam Connell (University of Melbourne) Abstract: Katherine Harrison could not have personally known anyone as feared and hated in their own home town as she was in Wethersfield. This article aims to explain how and why this was so. Although documentation is scarce for many witch trials, there are some for which much crucial information has survived, and we can reconstruct reasonably detailed accounts of what went on. The trial of Katherine Harrison of Wethersfield, Connecticut, at the end of the 1660s is one such case. An array of factors coalesced at the right time in Wethersfield for Katherine to be accused. Her self-proclaimed magical abilities, her socio- economic background, and most of all, the inter-personal and legal conflicts that she sustained with her neighbours all combined to propel this woman into a very public discussion about witchcraft in 1668-1670. The trial of Katherine Harrison was a vital moment in the development of the legal and theological responses to witchcraft in colonial New England. The outcome was the result of a lengthy process jointly negotiated between legal and religious authorities. This was the earliest documented case in which New England magistrates trying witchcraft sought and received explicit instruction from Puritan ministers on the validity of spectral evidence and the interface between folk magic and witchcraft – implications that still resonated at the more recognised Salem witch trials almost twenty-five years later. The case also reveals the social dynamics that caused much ambiguity and confusion in this early modern village about an acceptable use of the occult. -

Scheint dann die Sonne wieder günstig, so wachsen sie einsam und unbeachtet fort : keine frühe Sichel schneidet sie für die großen Vorratskammern, aber im Spätsommer, wenn sie reif und voll geworden, kommen arme Hände, die sie suchen, und Ähre an Ähre gelegt, sorg- fältig gebunden und höher geachtet als sonst ganze Garben, werden sie heimgetragen, und winterlang sind sie Nahrung, vielleicht auch der einzige Samen für die Zukunft. So ist es uns vorgekommen, wenn wir gesehen haben, wie von so vielem, was in früherer Zeit geblüht hat, nichts mehr übrig geblieben, selbst die Erinnerung daran fast ganz verlo- ren war, als unter dem Volke Lieder, ein paar Bücher, Sagen und diese unschuldigen Hausmärchen. Die Plätze am Ofen, der Küchenherd, Bodentreppen, Feiertage noch gefeiert, Trif- ten und Wälder in ihrer Stille, vor allem die ungetrübte Phan- tasie sind die Hecken gewesen, die sie gesichert und einer Zeit aus der andern überliefert haben. Es war vielleicht gerade Zeit, diese Märchen festzuhalten, da diejenigen, die sie bewahren sollen, immer seltener werden. Freilich, die sie noch wissen, wissen gemeinlich auch recht viel, weil die Menschen ihnen absterben, sie nicht den Menschen : aber die Sitte selber nimmt immer mehr ab, wie alle heimlichen Plätze in Wohnungen und Gärten, die vom Großvater bis zum Enkel fortdauerten, dem stetigen Wechsel einer leeren Präch- tigkeit weichen, die dem Lächeln gleicht, womit man von die- sen Hausmärchen spricht, welches vornehm aussieht und doch wenig kostet. -

Maul n omen is a clearly defined perception understood as a sign pointing to future A events whenever it manifests itself under identical circumstances. The classification of a perception as ominous is based on an epistemological development which establishes a normative relationship between the perceived and the future. This classification process is preceded by a period of detailed examination and is thus initially built on empirical knowledge. Omina only cease to be detected empirically when a firm conceptual link has been established between the observed and the future which then allows omina to be construed by the application of regularities. In the Mesopotamian written sources from the first and second millennia BC, omina based on regularities far exceed those based on empirical data. Mesopotamian scholars generally collected data without formally expressing the fundamental principles behind their method. It was the composition of non-empirical omina as such which allowed students to detect the regularities on which they were based without this formulated orally or in writing. Modern attempts at a systematic investigation of such principles however, are still outstanding. It is interesting that there is no Sumerian or Akkadian equivalent for the terms 'oracle' or 'omen'. Assyriologists use the term omen for the sentence construction 'if x then y' which consists of a main clause beginning with summa ('if') describing the ominous occurence, and a second clause which spells out the predicted outcome. -

SPIELESAMMLUNG mit 365 Spielmöglichkeiten Für jeden Tag ein Spiel Mühle Spieler: 2 Material: 1 Spielplan Mühle, 9 weiße und 9 schwarze Spielsteine So wird gespielt: Jeder Spieler erhält 9 Spielsteine derselben Farbe. Abwechselnd wird jeweils ein Spielstein auf einen freien Punkt des Spielfeldes gelegt. Jeder Spieler muss nun versuchen, eine Reihe aus 3 Spielsteinen in einer Linie zu bilden. Das ist eine Mühle. Wer eine Mühle bilden konnte, darf einen Spielstein des anderen vom Spielbrett wegnehmen – allerdings nicht aus einer geschlossenen Mühle des Gegners! Wenn alle Spielsteine auf dem Spielbrett liegen, geht das Spiel weiter, indem abwechselnd jeweils ein Stein entlang einer Linie zu einem angrenzenden freien Feld gezogen wird. Auch jetzt ist das Ziel, eine Mühle zu bilden. Eine Mühle kann beliebig oft geöffnet und beim nächsten Zug wieder geschlossen werden. Wer eine Mühle wieder schließt, darf seinem Gegner erneut einen Spielstein wegnehmen. Spielende: Sieger ist, wer den Gegenspieler durch seine Spielsteine so behindert, dass dieser keinen Zug mehr machen kann – oder wer seinem Gegner alle Steine bis auf 2 Stück weggenommen hat. Falls ein Spieler nur noch 3 Spielsteine auf dem Spielfeld hat und diese eine Mühle bilden, muss er seine Mühle beim nächsten Zug öffnen, auch wenn ihm dann ein Stein weggenommen wird und er das Spiel verliert. Varianten Gemischte Mühle Bei dieser Variante werden die Setz- und Zugphasen nicht voneinander getrennt. Der Spieler kann entscheiden, ob er einen Stein einsetzen oder ziehen möchte. Ceylonesische Mühle Die Regeln sind mit einer Ausnahme unverändert: Auch wenn beim anfänglichen Setzen der Spielsteine eine Mühle entsteht, darf kein gegnerischer Spielstein weggenommen werden. -

Astrology and other OccuIt Sciences in Seventeenth Century New Spain Ana Avalos· This artiele focuses on the relationship and mutual influence of astrology and other so called occult sciences within the context of Seventeenth-Century New Spain. By presen ting some case studies of inquisitorial trials against astrologers, it explores the interrelation between astrological and physiognomical ideas and practices in arder to sbed some light on tbe moral dimension of tbese natural phi1osophical fields ofknowledge. During tbe early modem period, both astrology and physiognomy were regarded as tools for self-unders tanding and tbe understanding of otllers by means of interpretation of natural signs. Thus tbeir history is key for understanding the shaping ofthe boundaries between the natural and the moral realms. Este artículo está enfocado en la relación e influencia mutua entre la astrologta y otras cien cias ocultas dentro del contexto de la Nueva España del siglo diecisiete. Al discutir algu· nos procesos inquisitoriales contra astrólogos, explora la interrelación entre ciertas ideas y prácticas tanto astrológicas como fisionómicas con el objetivo de enfatizar la dimensión moral de estos campos del conocimiento pertenecientes al ámbito de la filosofía natural. Durante los siglos dieciséis y diecisiete, tanto la astrología como la fisonomía eran conside radas como herramientas útiles para el auto-conocimiento y el conocimiento de los otros a través de la interpretación de signos naturales.
