Sing a glacial aria. Picture her—she once rode a surfboard ice floe ripping through solid water slipping the firn, making breccia wakes, scraping all matter of chattermarks. Harmonize a glacier-blue blush—she was whole mother of forward surge for half an eon, could not be stopped, shadowed the glacier that swept this same Sound. Now we cannot hoist her out of her chair. Aphasia—she forgets the second verse. Words freeze midbrain, coda becomes hum. She falls in a crevasse, off-ramps sequestering carbon—so much concrete we recant, we can’t watch icebergs calving fast ice. She slows—cowers shifts direction like a white wind rose, her petals shrivel in frazil. She lies—this is not the full story. Her tongue muddles in slush. Albedo lost, all reflection dulls. Once their song clamored. Now 99, glacier dwindle in cirques, caught in arête, retreat since the last ice age, since the last carbon storm. Wonderful book on Art, Seattle, FriendshipBy Mr. DemetreNot only is it one of the more delightful books I have read recently, it could very well be the best autobiography ever written by a lifetime resident of my hometown. "The Eighth Lively Art" is at once a colorful history of Seattle in the 1950s, a thoughtful exploration of the artistic process, and a celebration of the connections that exist between people.Wesley Wehr recounts his life as a young man in Seattle in the 1950s where, as a student of music composition at the University of Washington, he was befriended by such luminaries as painter Mark Tobey, poet Elizabeth Bishop, and actress Margaret Hamilton.

  • Helmi: Letters from Elma, by Wesley Wehr
WashingtonHistory.org HELMI Letters from Elma By Wesley Wehr The Magazine of Northwest History, Summer 2000: Vol. 14, No. 2 Nellie Cornish said to me, "Whoever becomes an artist dedicates himself to a lifetime of hard work." Someone also said, "Artists and saints are akin"—both possess infinite patience. —Helmi Juvonen Among the major artists of the "Northwest School"—Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Guy Anderson, Kenneth Callahan, George Tsutakawa, and about a dozen others—painter Helmi Juvonen has emerged as an important figure. Her work is imaginative, often playful, and bountifully original. No other non-Indian artist in the early history of Northwest Art has had such firsthand knowledge of Native American art of the Pacific Northwest. The only comparable figure would be British Columbia painter Emily Carr. Both Juvonen and Carr sketched the totemic art and rituals of the region, transforming their on-the-spot sketches into strong, distinctive artistic statements. Helmi Dagmar Juvonen (1903-1985) was born in Butte, Montana. When she was 15, she and her family moved to Seattle. Her Finnish parents encouraged her artistic expression as a child. By the time Helmi entered Queen Anne High School, she was already an accomplished artist. She continued to develop her talent at the Cornish School (now Cornish College of the Arts) and appears to have been a highly motivated, talented, and hard-working student. Boxes of notebooks from these early days attest to her passion for drawing. Helmi made a respectable living by selling prints to clients like Frederick & Nelson and making sketches for the Seattle Times.

This is a trying time and we have all been affected by what has transpired in the first few months of 2020. There are a couple of changes to the 2019 Annual Report that we would like to make explicitly clear. First, the Board of Trustees chose to forego an independent audit of the Museum’s finances for 2019. Because of its operating budget, the Museum is not required by federal law to undergo an annual audit. The Board chose to realize the cost savings possible through eliminating an expense that was about 2% of the annual operating budget. Instead, we plan to conduct an audit on a triennial or quadrennial schedule. The Board believes this plan to be sustainable, given the detailed oversight that is provided by the Finance Committee.

Contact Information Reference Department Archives of American Art Smithsonian Institution Washington. D.C. 20560 www.aaa.si.edu/askus Transcript Preface The following oral history transcript is the result of a tape-recorded interview with Jan Thompson on September 6, November 7 & 16, 1983. The interview took place in Seattle, WA, and was conducted by Sue Ann Kendall for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Interview DATE: SEPTEMBER 6, 1983 [Tape 1; Side 1] SUE ANN KENDALL: Jan, you're part of an important group of Northwest artists, and have known people like Morris Graves, Mark Tobey, Richard Gilkey, a lot of people, for years. And it seems like you yourself are one of its best-kept secrets. So I'd like to start out talking a little bit about you and where you came into the scene. JAN THOMPSON: Well, I'm actually not an artist, not an artist myself. But I met them all starting at the WPA art center in Spokane just as the war was first starting. SUE ANN KENDALL: You were a student? JAN THOMPSON: Yes, and all these fabulous people came. The WPA art center was a wonderful place for artists at that time, and Guy Anderson, first of all, was my special love. He was so incredible. I never met people like this in Spokane, my God! Carl and Hilda Morris came.
