(2017): Which of soil microbes is in positive correla- tion to yields of maize (Zea mays L.)? Plant Soil Environ., 63: 574–580. Soil microorganisms are critical to maintain soil function, enhance plant health and increase crop yields. This study investigated the effects of organic matter on soil microbial community and assessed which of soil microbes were in positive correlation to maize yields. The results showed that different fertilizer treatments shaped specific microbial communities in the same soils. The most abundant beneficial soil microbes were found in treatments with organic fertilizer produced from cattle manure, return of wheat straw and 70% NPK admixture fertilizers treatment. The correlation analysis revealed that maize yields were in no correlation both to the shifts of soil microbial community structure and to the number of sequences or operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in soil microbes. However, maize yields were in positive correlation to microbial community structure shifts at the species level. 35 bacteria OTUs from 19 orders in 14 classes in 9 phyla were in positive correlation to yields of maize, while in fungi only one OTU25 belonging to Sordariales was in positive correlation. Our results indicate that the long-term application of organic and inorganic amendments could enrich the soil bacterial and fungal community and promote its diversity. Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens USDA 110T possesses two flagellar systems, the subpolar and the lateral flagella. The lateral flagellum of Bradyrhizobium displays no obvious role, since its performance is explained by cooperation with the subpolar flagellum. In contrast, the lateral flagellum is the only type of flagella present in the related Rhizobiaceae family. In this work, we have analyzed the phylogeny of the Bradyrhizobium genus by means of Genome-to-Genome Blast Distance Phylogeny (GBDP) and Average Nucleotide Identity (ANI) comparisons of 128 genomes and divided it into 13 phylogenomic groups.

THESIS PROCESSES GOVERNING THE PERFORMANCE OF OLEOPHILIC BIO-BARRIERS (OBBS) – LABORATORY AND FIELD STUDIES Submitted by Laura Tochko Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Science Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Fall 2018 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Tom Sale Joe Scalia Sally Sutton Copyright by Laura Elizabeth Tochko 2018 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT PROCESSES GOVERNING THE PERFORMANCE OF OLEOPHILIC BIO-BARRIERS (OBBS) – LABORATORY AND FIELD STUDIES Petroleum sheens, a potential Clean Water Act violation, can occur at petroleum refining, distribution, and storage facilities located near surface water. In general, sheen remedies can be prone to failure due to the complex processes controlling the flow of light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) at groundwater/surface water interfaces (GSIs). Even a small gap in a barrier designed to resist the movement of LNAPL can result in a sheen of large areal extent. The cost of sheen remedies, exacerbated by failure, has led to research into processes governing sheens and development of the oleophilic bio-barrier (OBB). OBBs involve 1) an oleophilic (oil-loving) plastic geocomposite which intercepts and retains LNAPL and 2) cyclic delivery of oxygen and nutrients via tidally driven water level fluctuations. The OBB retains LNAPL that escapes the natural attenuation system through oleophilic retention and enhances the natural biodegradation capacity such that LNAPL is retained or degraded instead of discharging to form a sheen. Sand tank experiments were conducted to visualize the movement of LNAPL as a wetting and non-wetting fluid in a water-saturated tank.

  • Coral-Associated Nitrogen Fixation Rates and Diazotrophic Diversity On
www.nature.com/ismej ARTICLE OPEN Coral-associated nitrogen fixation rates and diazotrophic diversity on a nutrient-replete equatorial reef ✉ Molly A. Moynihan 1,2 , Nathalie F. Goodkin 2,3,4, Kyle M. Morgan 2, Phyllis Y. Y. Kho 2, Adriana Lopes dos Santos 2, Federico M. Lauro 2,5, David M. Baker 6,7 and Patrick Martin 2 © The Author(s) 2021 The role of diazotrophs in coral physiology and reef biogeochemistry remains poorly understood, in part because N2 fixation rates and diazotrophic community composition have only been jointly analyzed in the tissue of one tropical coral species. We performed 15 field-based N2 tracer incubations during nutrient-replete conditions to measure diazotroph-derived nitrogen (DDN) assimilation into three species of scleractinian coral (Pocillopora acuta, Goniopora columna, Platygyra sinensis). Using multi-marker metabarcoding (16S rRNA, nifH, 18S rRNA), we analyzed DNA- and RNA-based communities in coral tissue and skeleton. Despite low N2 fixation rates, DDN assimilation supplied up to 6% of the holobiont’s N demand. Active coral-associated diazotrophs were chiefly Cluster I (aerobes or facultative anaerobes), suggesting that oxygen may control coral-associated diazotrophy. Highest N2 fixation rates were observed in the endolithic community (0.20 µg N cm−2 per day). While the diazotrophic community was similar between the tissue and skeleton, RNA:DNA ratios indicate potential differences in relative diazotrophic activity between these compartments. In Pocillopora, DDN was found in endolithic, host, and symbiont compartments, while diazotrophic nifH sequences were only observed in the endolithic layer, suggesting a possible DDN exchange between the endolithic community and the overlying coral tissue.
