We exist to inspire boys to learn, lead and serve as they strive for excellence together. The rapid growth of the tech giants and their facilitation of social media discourse has changed the undercurrent of public dialogue in just a few short years. In Australia we have witnessed widespread moral failure of a number of institutions. The collapse of integrity in personal character inside cricket, banking and business has been alarming. Humans are motivated and inspired mostly by meaning and purpose. It is more important than ever that we equip our young men with the highest of purpose – a moral compass anchored to their Creator God; where their inspiration comes from eternal meaning; where their trust and hope is in the goodness of Christ, not the worthless self-idols of transient ideas or impermanent obsessions. In a mere 500 years, a tiny fraction of humanity’s long history, science – and the technological advances that have stemmed from it – has completely transformed every part of our lives. The scale of humanity’s scientific transformation in such a short period is so immense it’s hard to grasp. My grandmother was alive when one of the world’s oldest airlines, Qantas, was born. In her lifetime, flight has become as routine as daily roll call. Disease, famine and the toll of manual labour that once ravaged the world’s population have also been dramatically reduced. Science is at the heart of this progress. Given such incredible advancement, it’s tempting to think that science education must be in pretty good shape. Sadly, it isn’t. We could talk about falling PISA rankings, or declining STEM enrolments. But instead, and perhaps more importantly, let’s consider the world to which our students will graduate. A world of “fake news” and “alternative facts”.

CLTANSW has been supporting Chinese language teachers throughout New South Wales since 1996. We are managed by teacher volunteers who are devoted to promoting quality Chinese language education in NSW schools. Currently we have about 200 members and the number is still growing. Our mission is to promote Chinese language and cultural education across all levels; to provide a platform for Chinese teachers to share and exchange teaching experience, ideas and information; and to provide the best learning opportunities for our students so they may enhance their understanding of Chinese Culture as well as maximise their learning outcomes. Here are our achievements in 2018: Services provided for teachers: CLTANSW increased the number of NESA accredited courses for teachers • In order to help our teachers understand and gain a general overview of the new Chinese K-10 syllabus, two familiarisation workshops were run in May and July with 185 participants • About 60 teachers voluntarily participated in sample program writing projects across NSW.

    THE AUSTRALIA INSTITUTE Buying an education: Where are the returns highest? January 2004 Richard Denniss The Australian education system is currently experiencing rapid change at all levels. This paper considers the recent trends in private school enrolments and fees in light of the new university arrangements which allow for Australian citizens to enrol as full fee paying students rather than having to rely solely on academic merit to earn a place. The paper argues that if parents are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on their children’s school education to ensure that they can gain a place in a prestigious university course then they would be financially better off sending their children to public schools and using the money saved to buy them a full fee paying place at an Australian university. Trends in government and non-government school enrolments Enrolments in Australian private schools have risen steadily in Australia over the past 20 years. The absolute number of students enrolled in government schools has actually declined from 2.36 million in 1977 to 2.26 million in 2002. This decline in government school enrolments occurred over a period in which the total number of children enrolled in schools increased by 300,000. Enrolments in non-government schools have, therefore, risen from 21.1 per cent of all school enrolments to 31.6 per cent over the period 1977 to 2002 (ABS cat. 4221.0). Figure 1 demonstrates these trends.
