A MESSAGE FROM OUR NEW POST LADY

Hi to all at Crudwell and surrounding area. My name is Teresa (Sutton), your new post lady - well since 18th June. Just in case you have not met me yet, I would like the chance to introduce myself. I have worked for Royal Mail for 24 years and have been delivering around the town in Malmesbury for most of it. I'm a very friendly person, and easy to talk to. So if you have a problem, or any questions, please stop me at any time as I'm happy to help out where I can.

Teresa.

From the Editors: A warm welcome, Teresa, and good luck on your new “patch”

Page 2 CRUDWELL BADMINTON CLUB IN MEMORIAM

A new season for Crudwell Badminton Club began in September after the summer break and we are pleased to welcome a couple of new members. The Club is about socialising as well as the sport, so in May a good number of us enjoyed a meal out at The Horse Guards, which was great fun and the food and service was excellent as always. I reluctantly had to give up my coveted Most Improved Player trophy to this years much deserved winner – Robbie Hill. Keeping up the good humoured but never failing sense of competition, a skittles night was held in June at the Red Bull in Malmesbury, a tense battle of skill, grit and determination as well as lots of laughs and a tasty buffet supper was enjoyed by all. We are sad to report the death of William John ( Jack ) The annual in‐house Badminton Tournament was held in Hedges who passed away on the 24 October 2012. July, resulting in an evening of fun, banter and a few tough games, with the overall tournament champions being the Jack had lived in the Dawneys, Crudwell for over 22 years formidable team of Richard Chadwick and Pauline and was to be seen walking around the village every day. Ainsworth. The Club always welcomes new members; we meet every Beloved father of Chris and Tony Hedges of Crudwell and Monday and Friday (except over Bank Holidays) from 8pm Kathleen Siddall of St Lucy, Barbados. – 10pm. FREE OFFICE EQUIPMENT The Parish Council has some old office equipment that is not currently in use which comprises of a black and white printer, fax machine and photocopier. These items are offered to any local community group to collect free of charge. Contact any member of the Parish Council for more details. SAFE DRIVE STAY ALIVE Recently the area board received a short presentation from Ian Hopkins from Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service about a special ‘Safe drive Stay Alive’ event which the area board are hosting on Tuesday 11 December 2012 at Malmes- bury School at 7.30pm . This event is aimed at parents, grandparents and any other adult or young person over the age of 15 who would like to attend. Most young people in year 11 at Malmesbury school will see the presentation (in Chippen- ham) during the previous week. If you wonder why the area board are hosting the event it is because we know that the Malmesbury community area has one of the highest levels of car ownership in the county and being a rural area many young people will be driving themselves and their friends around to get out and about. We know that young drivers have a greater risk of accidents, so we want to do as much as we can to raise awareness not only amongst young people but also their parents and grandparents, who in many cases will be the car owners Miranda Gilmour Malmesbury Community Area Manager Wiltshire Area Boards -Northern Locality Team Home Office: 01672 515742 Mobile: 07990 505882 Page 3 PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION

Tel 01666 510520 [email protected] WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE Gary, Penny & Jessica Marshall of Lime Tree Cottage (Opposite Mayfield Hotel) would like to thank everyone for their help & support on Sunday during the flood. Special thanks to Graham and Dawn, the couple from Ford cottage, the Fire brigade, staff at the Mayfield and everyone else who provided hot drinks & biscuits, tried to slow the traffic or offered to help. Also thanks to Jim Payne and all those involved in clearing about a mile of the Swill brook from the bridge on the A429 to the last covert on the footpath to the bungalow on Murcott Lane. I am glad to say that the collective efforts of everyone helped to prevent water getting in to Lime Tree, Vine Tree and Elm Lea.

Flood at Old Byer, Crudwell On Sunday 4 November 2012 Bob & I were subjected to Mother Nature at her worst (she was not happy!) and our home, the Old Byer in Rommel Lane, was flooded. Our neighbours gave up their Sunday to help us bale out the water. Without them we would not have been able to cope with the sudden influx of water. So to Sue, David, and little George, Mike, Sarah, and their children, Bob and Lyne we would like to thank them for their kindness, time and efforts. Also Annie & Mike for their offer of a meal & bed for the night. To the staff at the Mayfield Hotel who were welcoming as we turned up in our joggers, sweat shirts, and wellies to have lunch in the restaurant. It made us both realise what fantastic neighbours and friends we have in Crudwell. Linda & Bob Perry

Great community spirit all round!

Grateful thanks to Jenny and Phil Ward for the use of their photographs.

Page 7 CRUDWELL SHORT MAT BOWLS CLUB

We welcome our latest recruit, Hillary Slatter, to the club. Hillary has played with us on three occasions and is already showing signs of being a ‘handy’ bowler. We also welcome Neville Doel back to playing. Our County League team has won both games and are currently top of the County League North. Let’s hope we can keep it up into the future. Our last game against Melksham was comfortably won and was remarkable because Anita and Gordon Smith were involved in their first ‘hot-shot’. Well done both. Readers will know that we have two teams in the Malmesbury League. Games between the Coots and Curlews are always hard fought but they are also played in the best spirit. This season the teams will play each other at least four times, having been drawn together in the League Knock-out Cup. The first KO Cup game went to the Curlews but the return leg still has to be played. Curlews are currently top of the League with Coots handily placed having played more difficult teams. Les and Pam Baldry playing with Geoff and Jenny Lane won the prestigious Hardwicke (Gloucester) Open Mixed Fours recently, being the only undefeated team on the day. Finally, Crudwell have three players in the Wiltshire team for the 2012/2013 season – Pam and Les Baldry and Geoff Lane. The Moonrakers are in a group containing Oxfordshire and Hampshire, both of whom have many senior and under 21 English internationals. The Baldrys have an impressive record of four games played with three wins and a narrow defeat against very accomplished opponents Don’t forget short mat bowls is a friendly yet competitive sport enjoyed by people of all ages. If you fancy having a go, come to the Village Hall on either a Thursday afternoon (2.30pm start) or Sunday evenings (7.30pm start). Please bring flat shoes and we will provide the woods and guidance. Your first session will be free. GDL (12/11/12)

COFFEE ‘N’ CHAT Our humble apologies to all our coffee ‘n’ chatterers as last month’s Parish News was given the wrong date. Sorry about that. Luckily Hope managed to contact the regulars and put the mistake right. Although the November get-together lost some of its regulars, the enthusiasm, friendship and ‘spending power’ made an enjoyable Coffee ‘n’ Chat in the Church and the grand sum of £110.60 was raised for Church funds. Thank you to everybody for making the morning such fun, there was a lot of laughter and chat. The raffle winners were: Hope Carpenter; Sandra Doel; Margaret English; Kathleen Gifford; John Hanniford; Les Pearce; Carmel Rogers and Eve White. The bumper Christmas coffee ‘n’ chat will be on Wednesday, 12 December in the open space in All Saints Church. There will be the sales table with some Christmas goodies to stock up on for the big day, mince pies to go with the coffee, the raffle table and, most importantly of all, friends to catch up with or welcome new friends to the regular monthly get-togethers. So do come along and enjoy the friendly atmosphere. 2012 CHRISTMAS MESSAGE This year has seen major changes for all my family but nothing like the family we hear about at Christmas. They were forced to travel on a long journey because of a government law; arriving in Bethlehem with no welcoming relations but a mucky stable where their baby is born. Not quite the story we hear in the children's nativities. There is so much to see in the Christmas story. God turns our understanding of life upside down. Jesus lived in glorious heaven and gave it up to begin a new life in a messy stable. He became a vulnerable baby with a young inexperienced girl as his mother who could have been stoned to death as she conceived out of wedlock. The first people to see 'God made man' were shepherds classed as the dregs of society. Even the gifts of the wise men were not really appropriate for a young baby; yet they held a message. Gold for a king, Frankincense for holiness and Myrrh for suffering and death. The family had no sooner put down roots when they had to flee to another country to keep alive as Herod killed all youngsters under two. Not a very promising beginning. Yet from this unpromising start came Jesus Christ who has shaped the whole world and is still doing it. If nothing else this Christmas take away Jesus' gift to every person, each of us matter, we are not just numbers but special unique individuals in his eyes. Jesus loves us for who we are and he will help us as we journey through life. His life was full of traumas so he understands what we go through; all we need do is to come to him. I pray that this Christmas you will find Jesus' gift of love and feel his joy and peace enter into your hearts and know you are never alone. God Bless you. Sarah Wyman Curate of Braydon Brook

ACHIEVED: maternity cover for our Bookings Secretary. Sarah Hoxey has volunteered to give support to and work with Vicki in handling the bookings, and we are delighted to welcome her on board. Please note our new phone number for bookings 07584 316866 which takes effect immediately.

BUILT: the replacement storage shed is up and operational. At last we have a dry area for use for storage by Crudwell PreSchool and the Bike Ride Committee, which means that some equipment can also be moved out of the store room into the shed. This was an expensive undertaking but practically all the costs have been met by a grant which was obtained before re-building commenced. Huge thanks are due to Ian Churchill for all his work in organising the replacement shed, and to Claire Buxton for her work in applying for and obtaining the grant on our behalf.

MORE THANKS: to George Guest for his great work as caretaker at the hall. Huge praise has been coming in from our ad-hoc bookings and the last couple of parties in particular have reported back about how helpful he has been.

And finally, FAREWELL: to Pam Baldry who has decided to resign from the Committee due to having so many other commitments. Pam has been a part of the village hall committee for as long as any of us can remember, and we are indebted to her for all her contributions and input to its smooth running over the years.

We have been delighted by the response to the Creative Writing Competition. Entries from young and not so young alike have been excellent - James Bond; oblique cricketing references; Vikings; - Even a re-working of Shakespeare’s Sonnet No.18!

However, there can only be one winner.

A load of logs, courtesy of Jonathan Capper, is on its way to Freya Thomson for this effort, judged the best by an independent adjudication panel, and which we now reproduce in full.

A copse story by PC Plod

Working as a cop certainly leaves me sapped of energy and feeling bushed each day, but it is only since working at Special Branch that I’ve felt real excitement about completing each case.

My current case stemmed from an incident yesterday at the docks: Holly, a sniffer dog, kept barking whenever she passed a particular container. Her handler, Flora, couldn’t see anything unusual but wanting to get to the root of the mystree, conducted a root and branch search around its perimeter. Finding nothing and feeling stumped, Flora looked up, only to see (against the moonlight) a hand sticking out from the top of the container, palm down. Ashen-faced, she twigged that to find out more she would have open the container and, suspecting murder, called Special Branch. My partner and I were sent to investigate.

The chestnut-haired Flora greeted us and we quietly advanced through the darkness to the container. As we neared, a sound caught our attention; I pulled out my pistil in readiness. By the container was a seedy-looking man trying to cut into it, clearly as thick as two short planks not to realise that he wood be heard. It didn’t take long to apprehend him and call for back-up.

After opening the container, it transpired that this ‘hand’ had been planted on top by a much-wanted drug-smuggling cartel as an indication of which container to cut open, for hidden inside it was a stash of illegal weed. Our success tasted like nectar.

Flora beamed: “Holly’s rarely wrong.” (Clearly, she has a budding career in the Dog Section.)

In December, we turn our attention to food and drink. CRUDWELL BIKE RIDE 2013

As the nights draw in and the days grow colder, the Village bike ride recedes into a memory of the summer just past. As we all prepare for the coming winter, a small band of people are starting to look towards Bike Ride 2013.

One of the aims this year is to revamp the website to enable a lot more functionality so registering and paying etc all become far easier and it will reduce the huge workload on the Admin team. We have enlisted the help of the right people with the right skills to build the new site and they have asked for people to dig out video clips, photos etc of previous bike rides so they can be uploaded for every ones enjoyment. So could we ask that you look to see if you have anything that would be suitable for use on the website. The next edition of the CPN will hopefully have more information on uploading or donating for upload, so this is just a request for everyone to start dusting off and looking for material.
