The detail description of each place is mentioned below: Haridwar 200 kms from Delhi, Haridwar is rightly termed as 'Gateway to Gods' and known as Mayapuri, Kapila and Gangadwar. Rightly said as the paradise for pilgrims, Haridwar is also a point of entry to Dev Bhoomi and Char Dham (Four main centers of pilgrimage in Uttarakhand) Viz. Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. It is also said that Haridwar has been sanctified by the presence of three Gods; Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Lord Vishnu is said to have his footprint on the stone that is set in the upper wall of Har-Ki-Pauri where the Holy Ganga touches it at all times. Haridwar is also one of the four places; where Kumbh Mela occurs after rotation of every twelve Years and Ardh Kumbh after every six years. It is said that drops of Amrit (Elixir) fell in to the Brahmkund of Har-Ki-Pairi, therefore considered that a dip in the Brahmakund on this particular Day which is very auspicious and when Jupiter (Brahaspati) comes to the sign Aquarius (Kumbh) once in every twelve years the Maha Kumbh fair is celebrated at Haridwar. It is also known as the gateway to the Himalayas and is located around 25 kilometres away from Haridwar. Dehradun Dehradun the capital city of the Uttarakhand state, and the headquarters of Dehradun District is located in the Doon valley, 230 kilometres north of India's capital New Delh. The district is surrounded by the Himalayas in the north, Sivalik Hills in the south, the river Ganga in the east, and the river Yamuna in the west. The water divide of Ganga and Yamuna passes through the city. Places of interest • Tapkeshawar Temple: Ancient temple of Shiva is located 5.5 kms from Dehradun • Sahastradhara:Sahasratra Dhara, laterally meaning, the 'thousand fold spring' is situated at a distance of 11 kms. from Dehra Dun. The place makes an ideal picnic spot and is of immense attraction to visitors. • Laxman Siddh:12 Kms. Away from Dehradun towards Hardwar/Rishikesh is a famous temple known as the Laxman Siddh. Legend has it that a sage underwent penance over here. Due to easy accessibility the temple is visited by a large number of people especially on SunDays. • Malsi Deer Park: 10 Kms. From Dehradun, enroute Mussoorie is situated a beautifully developed tourist spot lying at the foot hills of the Shivalik range. • Chandrabani: Situated 7 Kms from Dehradun on the Dehradun-Delhi road is the famous temple of Chandrabani(Gautam Kund). • Robber’s Cave (Guchhupani): An ideal place for a picnic, Robber’s Cave is just 8 Kms away from the City Bus Stand. Local bus services are available upto Anarwala Village, from where it is just a Kilometre’s trek to the spot. • Lachhiwala: 3 Kms from Doiwala and 22 Kms from Dehradun, on the Hardwar/Rishikesh road is Lachhiwala. The serene and blissful spot is famous for its picnic spots • Dakpathar: 45 Kms from Dehradun, Dakpathar is a beautiful tourist spot in the western Doon Valley, amidst the Shivalik range. Dakpathar has emerged a wonderful tourist spot under the Yamuna Hydel Scheme. Badrianth Badrianth: Perched at an altitude of 3,133 mt. above sea-level, in the middle of a beautiful valley, it is located on the right bank of holy river Alaknanda. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple of Shri Badrinathji is 15 mt. in height, built in the form of a cone with a small cupola of a gilt bull and spire. Legend dates the temple prior to the Vedic age, though the present temple is believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th century A.D., Hindu reformist. The temple has been renovated several times due to earlier damages by avalanches and looks modern now with a colourful "Singh Dwara" or the main entrance gate. The temple has three parts - Garbha Griha (the sanctum sanctorum), Darshan Mandap (for pujas) and Shobha Mandap (for devotees to assemble). Weather: In summer the maximun temp is 18 degrees and the minimum is 10 degrees celsius. The Days are pleasantly cool but the nights are cold. The weather is changeable and it can suddenly become extremely cold even in the summer. Distance: Badrianth is at a distance of 526 kms from Delhi, 301 kms from Rishikesh, 165 kms from Rudraprayag. Excursions: Mata Murty Temple Devoted to the mother of Sri Badrinathji. Other important temples include Shesh Netra temple, Urvashi Temple and Charanpaduka. Mana Village Inhabited by an Indo-Mongolian tribe, it is the last Indian village before Tibet. It is 3 km from Badrinath by road. Vasudhara As the name suggests, Vasudhara is a magnificent water fall. This place is 5 km from Badrinath, out of which 2 km is motor able upto Mana. Tapt Kund Natural thermal springs on the bank of the river Alaknanda, where it is customary to bathe before entering the Badrinath Temple. Narad Kund A recess in the river, near Tapt Kund, forming a pool, from where the Badrinath idol was recovered. Brahma Kapal A flat platform on the bank of river Alaknanda. Hindus perform propitiating rites for their deceased ancestors. Sheshnetra 1.5 km away is a boulder having an impression of the legendary serpent, better known as the Sheshnag's eye. Charanpaduka 3 km away is a beautiful meadow, where the footprint of Lord Vishnu is seen on a boulder. Neelkanth A pyramidal shaped snowy peak (6,600 m) towering above Badrinath presents a dramatic sight. It is popularly known as the 'Garhwal Queen'. Panch Badri: 1. Badrianth: 2.Yogadhyan Badri (1920m): From Badrinath drive towards Joshimath, after 23 kms you arrive at Yog badri which is near Pandukeshwar, accomodation is available at Govind Ghat which is just 3 kms away 3.Bhavishya Badri (2744m): From joshimath drive 15kms to tapovan then another 4kms to saldhar then 6kms trek to bhavishya badri. 4.Vridha Badri (1380m): From joshimath drive towards pipalkoti, after 20kms just before helang is vridh badri 5.Adi Badri (1180m): From karna prayag (take the road which goes to ranikhet) drive 6kms to shimli then 13kms drive to adi badri Kedarnath. Kedarnath (3584 m): The Kedarnath shrine, one of the 12 jyotirlings of Lord Shiva, is a scenic spot situated, against the backdrop of the majestic Kedarnath range. At an altitude of 3,581 mt it is a 14 km trek from Gaurikund. Gaurikund is 210 kms from Rishikesh and 75 kms from Rudraprayag. An imposing sight, standing in the middle of a wide plateau surrounded by lofty snow covered peaks. The present temple, built in 8th century A.D. by Adi Shankaracharya, Stands adjacent to the site of an earlier temple built by the Pandavas. The inner walls of the assembly hall are decorated with figures of various deities and scenes from mythology. Outside the temple door a large statue of the Nandi Bull stands as guard. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the exquisitely arhitectured Kedarnath temple considered to be more than 1000 years old. Built of extremely large, heavy and evenly cut grey slabs of stones, it evokes wonder as to how these heavy slabs had been handled in the earlier Days.
