The Emergence of the Mahajanapadas Sanjay Sharma Introduction In the post-Vedic period, the centre of activity shifted from the upper Ganga valley or madhyadesha to middle and lower Ganga valleys known in the contemporary Buddhist texts as majjhimadesha. Painted grey ware pottery gave way to a richer and shinier northern black polished ware which signified new trends in commercial activities and rising levels of prosperity. Imprtant features of the period between c. 600 and 321 BC include, inter-alia, rise of ‘heterodox belief systems’ resulting in an intellectual revolution, expansion of trade and commerce leading to the emergence of urban life mainly in the region of Ganga valley and evolution of vast territorial states called the mahajanapadas from the smaller ones of the later Vedic period which, as we have seen, were known as the janapadas. Increased surplus production resulted in the expansion of trading activities on one hand and an increase in the amount of taxes for the ruler on the other. The latter helped in the evolution of large territorial states and increased commercial activity facilitated the growth of cities and towns along with the evolution of money economy. The ruling and the priestly elites cornered most of the agricultural surplus produced by the vaishyas and the shudras (as labourers). The varna system became more consolidated and perpetual. It was in this background that the two great belief systems, Jainism and Buddhism, emerged. They posed serious challenge to the Brahmanical socio-religious philosophy. These belief systems had a primary aim to liberate the lower classes from the fetters of orthodox Brahmanism. -

The time span of the period is uncertain. Philological and linguistic evidence indicates that the Rigveda, the oldest of the Vedas, was com- posed roughly between 1700 and 1100 BCE, also referred to as the early Vedic period. The end of the period is commonly estimated to have occurred about 500 BCE, and 150 BCE has been suggested as a terminus ante quem for all Vedic Sanskrit literature. Transmission of texts in the Vedic period was by oral tradition alone, and a literary tradition set in only in post-Vedic times. Despite the difficulties in dating the period, the Vedas can safely be assumed to be several thousands of years old. The associated culture, sometimes referred to as Vedic civilization, was probably centred early on in the northern and northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent, but has now spread and constitutes the basis of contemporary Indian culture. MODULE - 1 Ancient India 5 Notes FROM JANAPADAS TO EMPIRE In the last chapter we studied how later Vedic people started agriculture in the Ganga basin and settled down in permanent villages. In this chapter, we will discuss how increased agricultural activity and settled life led to the rise of sixteen Mahajanapadas (large territorial states) in north India in sixth century BC. We will also examine the factors, which enabled Magadh one of these states to defeat all others to rise to the status of an empire later under the Mauryas. The Mauryan period was one of great economic and cultural progress. However, the Mauryan Empire collapsed within fifty years of the death of Ashoka. We will analyse the factors responsible for this decline. This period (6th century BC) is also known for the rise of many new religions like Buddhism and Jainism. We will be looking at the factors responsible for the emer- gence of these religions and also inform you about their main doctrines. Reviewed by Alexander Wynne Published on H-Buddhism (July, 2011) Commissioned by Daniel A. Arnold According to standard textbook histories of ancient India, Hinduism, or at least some similar form of Brahminism, was the dominant religion rejected by the Buddha, who, in response to the class privileges and rituals of the Brahmins, formulated a “new” Dharma. This understanding of the cultural and intellectual background to early Buddhism is firmly rejected in Johannes Bronkhorst’s Greater Magadha. Countering a view he believes is “largely mistaken,” Bronkhorst instead proposes that Buddhism originated in the non-Vedic culture of “Greater Magadha,” an area he defines as “roughly the geographical area in which the Buddha and Mahāvīra lived and taught. With regard to the Buddha, this area stretched by and large from Śrāvastī, the capital of Kosala, in the north-west to Rājagṛha, the capital of Magadha, in the south-east” (pp. xi, 4). The basic evidence for this alternative cultural history is outlined in the introduction. Bronkhorst first draws attention to early Brahmanical sources on the āryāvarta, “domain of the Aryas,” i.e., the area in which Vedic culture and religion flourished. According to Patañjali’sMahābhāṣya (ca. 150 BCE) and the Baudhāyana and Vasiṣṭha Dharma Sūtras, this area extended as far as the confluence of the Gaṅgā and Yamunā rivers. -

Sources Political and cultural history of the period from C 600 to 300 BCE is known for the first time by a possibility of comparing evidence from different kinds of literary sources. Buddhist and Jaina texts form an authentic source of the political history of ancient India. The first four books of Sutta pitaka -- the Digha, Majjhima, Samyutta and Anguttara nikayas -- and the entire Vinaya pitaka were composed between the 5th and 3rd centuries BCE. The Sutta nipata also belongs to this period. The Jaina texts Bhagavati sutra and Parisisthaparvan represent the tradition that can be used as historical source material for this period. The Puranas also provide useful information on dynastic history. A comparison of Buddhist, Puranic and Jaina texts on the details of dynastic history reveals more disagreement. This may be due to the fact that they were compiled at different times. Apart from indigenous literary sources, there are number of Greek and Latin narratives of Alexander’s military achievements. They describe the political situation prevailing in northwest on the eve of Alexander’s invasion. -

Gods are numerous and each god or goddess shows very often mutually irreconcilable traits within him or her. This is equally true of Sarasvati, too. She is one of female deities of the Rgvedic times. She has got many peculiarities of her own resulting in complexity of her various conceptions through the ages. In the Rgvedic pantheon, among female deities, Usas, the daughter of the heaven is (divo duhita)/given an exalted place and has been highly extolled as a symbol of poetic beauty. Sarasvati comes next to her in comparison to other Rgvedic goddesses. But in the later period, Usas has lost her superiority and Sarasvati has excelled her. The superiority of Sarasvati is also obvious from another instance. In the Vedic pantheon, many ideitiet s arose and later on merged into others. If any one of them survived,/was mostly in an sterio- typed form. But with Sarasvati, there has been a gradual process of change and development. In her earliest stage, she was a spacious stream having rythmic flow and congenial waters. It was, therefore, but natural that it arrested the attention of seers dwelling along with its banks. They showed their heart-felt reverence to her. -

Abstract: The Bible shares its geography with geographies of all world religious literature; with geographies of all world epics and mythologies; with geographies of Alexander‘s India invasion records, Asoka‘ Rock Edicts, Ptolemy‘s Maps and his Geography, the Periplus, Pliny‘s Natural History, and with geographies of all ancient travellers‘ accounts. The Bible identifies the ‗first land‘ where all ancient monarchies appeared and disappeared. This land was at the ‗centre‘ of the earth where men and women walked with company of Gods. Great-Flood separated them from their ancient lands. In the ‗first land‘ ancient Israel finds its roots as an integral part of ‗ancient India‘. The distance between certain facts of ancient history, and the myths and legends disappears here. It becomes the meeting ground of all human civilizations. Humans‘ faith believes in geographical proclamation on Gods‘ real abode on earth, and man‘s first appearance on it. In its skeletons‘ museum, the ―first land‖ lives on the southern sea shore of Odisha near the Sun Temple at Konark remembering perpetual partnership of Gods with humans. It is discovery of the ―first land of human civilization‖ where every recorded primordial thing on humans‘ journey on earth, happened. 13 ARYAN PAST AND POST-COLONIAL PRESENT The polemics and politics of indigenous Aryanism Lars Martin Fosse It is legitimate to search for the Indo-Europeans on protohistoric ground, but this is a prolongation of the hypothesis, not a verification of it. The truth of the idea of “Indo-European” lies in the language and the religion, not in archaeology. (Bernard Sergent)1 On October 16, 1996, the Indian newspaper The Economic Times published an article, quoted on the Internet, about a conference entitled “Indologists discount Aryan influx theory.” The first paragraph reads: A conference of over 300 Indologists here has rejected the Aryan Invasion Theory. The conference on “Revisiting Indus-Saraswati Age and Ancient India,” attended by scholars all over the world, was aimed at correcting the “dis- torted Hindu history,” according to Ms Reeta Singh, one of the organisers. “Recent archaeological discoveries have fully established that there was a continuous evolution of civilization on the Indian subcontinent from about 5000 BC, which remained uninterrupted through 1000 BC. This leaves no scope whatsoever to support an Aryan invasion theory,” a resolution at the conference said. It explained that the term Arya in Indian literature has no racial or linguistic connotations. It was used in the noble sense. (The Economic Times, October 16, 1996) This remarkable plebiscite shows to what degree the question of Indo-Aryan origins has become politicized. Normally scholarly questions are not made the subject of popular vote. But then the conference was sponsored by various American Hindu organizations, among which we find the Vishwa Hindu Parishad Atlanta Chapter and the Arya Samaj Chicago, both branches of important Indian 434 ARYAN PAST AND POST-COLONIAL PRESENT Hindu revivalist organizations.
