KHS HIGHLIGHTER Vol. 17 No. 2 Winter, 2010 National Merit Students Three Kennett High School students have been named in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship Program by officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Kayla Iacuzio, Diane Libert and Patrick Mallon are among the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8200 Merit Scholarships valued at more than $35 million. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in is proportional to the commonwealth’s percentage of the national total of From left to right are semifinalists graduating seniors. Kayla Iacuzio, Patrick Mallon and Diane Libert. To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed and recom- mended by the Principal, and have SAT scores that confirm his earlier qualifying test performances. He must submit a detailed scholarship application with a self-descriptive essay and information about participation and leadership in school and community activities. Three types of Merit Scholarship awards will be offered in the Spring of 2010. Every Finalist will compete for one of 2500 National Merit $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. About 1100 corporate-sponsored scholarships will be provided by some 300 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of com- munities where sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, approximately 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4600 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution. Merit Scholarship winners of 2010 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. Eight fellow seniors Emily Cook, Iain Grigsby, Alec Lessner, Laura May, Mollie McDowell, Christopher Myers, Keigo Shimomuro, and Catherine Walsh have been named Commended Students. Although these students do not continue in the competition for Merit Scholarships, they placed among the top 5% of the 1.4 million students who entered the 2009 Merit Scholarship competition by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. A spokesperson for the program said, “The young people named commended students in the 2009 National Merit Schol- arship Program are distinguished by their strong academic performance in this rigorous competition. The National Hispanic Recognition Program, established in 1983, is a College Board program that provides national recognition of the exceptional academic achievements of Hispanic high school seniors and identifies these seniors for postsecondary institutions. Qualification for recognition is based on three factors: The PSAT/NMSQT test score taken in junior year with a cutoff score in each of the three areas of critical reading, mathematics and writing skills; self- identification as being of Hispanic ethnicity; and cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 for Honorable Mention and 3.5 for Scholar status. The money can be used for paying a family’s bills, a college fund for a child who lost a par- ent, or even helping a family get food on the table. Interact also worked together with the National Honor Society to gather spare change in the cafeteria for the Pennies for Patients fund. The Interact Club worked hard last year to improve the lives of under- privileged and less fortunate people, and the group hopes to do the same in the coming year. The club advisor is Mr. John Griffith.

Hope for Haiti is the name of the Kennett High School campaign to raise funds for the effort to rebuild Haiti and offer hope for its people. The KHS campaign is being coordinated by members of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Humanitarian Club, and other interested students. The student organizers decided to donate all raised money to the organization Partners in Health which has an established presence within Haiti. An advertising campaign began the week following the earthquake with an educational spot on K-TV. The footage was compiled by J.C. Busby and Colleen Shifletwith the help of Video Production teacher and K-TV advisor Frank Vanderslice. The campaign will continue with ads, posters, flyers, and postings by e-mail. Monetary collections began at the Senior Play, where $200 was raised. Students will continue to collect from attendees at school events (concerts, sports events, etc.) through February. Students will also be visiting local businesses to ask the businesses to host collection containers on behalf of the KHS effort. Restaurants are being asked to participate in a KHS Hope for Haiti night during Hope for Haiti Week, February 22-26. Hope for Haiti Week will feature a benefit concert in Reynolds Gymnasium on Thursday, February 25. The National Honor Society will be collecting donations from individuals in advisory rooms daily during the week. Individual students and their families have spearheaded many initiatives that will be seen in the campaign. The Mallon Family (Ryan and Pat) met with others at their home to discuss ways to help. The Flax Family (Derrick and Esther) worked on a One Person/One Dollar theme, and the Mulry Family (Olivia) printed t- shirts to raise funds. Seniors, "Don't Rock the Boat"

Seniors presented their annual fun theatrical event, this year staging Tim Kelly's "Don't Rock the Boat." The comedy featured an impossibly young captain, seasick engineer, hypodermic happy nurse, thieves, pirates, Hollywood stars, and other loony characters on the aptly named cruise ship Vengeance. Directed by Ms. Irene Meredith with costumes and make-up by Mrs. Barbara Johanson, set design and stage management by Mr. Jonathan Johanson, technical direction by Mr. Devin Zuczek, and props coordinated by Mrs. Susan Sodomin, the play entertained the audience over its two night run. Serving on the many crews were Samantha Walls and Michael Gift (costumes); Roberto Vallencia (props); Gerald Johanson, Wesley Terpning, Luis Avalos and Brian Gonzales (sets), Carrie Carson and Ayla Benge (lighting/sound); Christina Blevins and Jessica Fischer (stage); Karen Keys, Samantha Murphy, Christina Blevins and Jessica Fischer (make-up); Samantha Murphy (prompting). Family Connection www.connection.naviance.com/kennetths

This is our second school year utilizing the Family Connection program, a Web-based career and college planning tool for students and parents. Family Connection is also used in our office to track and analyze data about college and career plans, so it can provide up-to-date information that’s specific to our school and your child. We will continue to utilize Family Connection with all students by having them complete an activity that is specific to their grade level. We encourage both students and parents to make use of this program to help them in making decisions about the student’s career and college plans.

Through Family Connection, students can utilize assessments to learn more about themselves and to receive suggestions about potential career paths. Results from these assessments, along with a career database, will assist students in the completion of their graduation project. Students have the ability to complete a college search and research information about specific colleges through the extensive database of colleges within the program. Family Connection is also an excellent communication tool, letting us share information about up-coming meetings, events, local scholarship opportunities, and other Web resources for college and career information.

Students have registered with the program here at school. Parents also have the ability to access the benefits of Family Connection. If you have not registered with the program, we encourage you to do so. SpringPlease contact SAT’s your child’s counselor for your registration code.

The SAT Reasoning Test will be administered at KHS on March 13, 2010 (February 4deadline). Students may register on-line for any 2010 SAT at www.collegeboard.com. The remaining SAT dates are: May 1 (March 25 deadline) and June 5 (April 29 deadline). Students must send their SAT scores to colleges Andirectly SAT Prep from Course The College is available Board. to all KHS students through the Family Connection program. This Web-based course was introduced to the juniors during November. Students have the ability to access this tool anytime through the internet. Parents can monitor their child’s progress through the course by signing into their Family Connection account.

Local Scholarships

This is advanced notice of the availability of local scholarships and awards. An application will be mailed home in April to every senior. These awards will be announced at graduation. The one-page application is easy to complete. A copy of the student’s financial aid letter from the school he or she expects to attend must be attached and returned to the guidance office.

General Scholarships

Any national or business related scholarships arriving in the Guidance Office wills be- posted in the scholarship listing within the Family Connection program, accessed through the following web address www.connection.naviance.com/kennetth . Stu from dents are encouraged to investigate this listing and review it frequently to check the for updates. Most of these scholarships have web sites and the applications can be Guidance Department downloaded. Scholarship applications are time sensitive so students must be sure to keep track of scholarship deadlines. Scholarships requiring a transcript and/or a counselor portion should be given to the Guidance Office at least 10 school days before the deadline. A signed release form and a stamped addressed envelope must also be attached. NOTE: If a Web site is not given, the scholarship information will be Courseavailable Selection in the Guidance Materials Office.

The course selection process for 2010-11 will soon be under way. Educational Planning Guides were (will be) distributed to students in the first week of February. Please use this booklet as your resource for descriptions, prerequisites and sequences of all courses offered at Kennett High School. To guide you in making decisions about next year’s classes, teachers will make their recommendations based on the student’s achievement, class performance and their knowledge of course expectations. These recommendations are especially important in sequential subject areas such as English, mathematics, social studies and science. Counselors will meet with students in classes to review elective choices and graduation requirements. Students’ course requests will then be entered into the school’s computer and a printout of your individual student’s course requests for next year will be mailed home during the second semester. An actual draft of your student’s schedule for the 2010-11 school year will be mailed home at the end of July and there will be an additional opportunity to make revisions at that time. As Reachingalways, school Your counselors Child's Teachers are available and Counselor to discuss your student’s educational plan.

Driver’s education is a two part program: the theory portion, which consists of 30 class hours of instruction, and the supervised driving portion, which consists of 6 hours of actual behind- the-wheel practice. Upon completion of both parts of driver education, students are issued a certificate stating that they have fulfilled the course requirements. The Chester County Intermediate Unit provides Driver’s Education courses and students may register for this course by completing a form available - in the high school main office.
