Your Name Here THE RHETORIC OF AUTHORITY AND THE DEATH METAPHOR by DEBORAH ANN NOEL (Under the Direction of Christy Desmet) ABSTRACT In this dissertation, I reexamine the "death of the author" critical phenomenon and argue that literary theory in this vein is less about the author than it is about authoritative discourse, which is very different. I use the death-as-absence and writing-as-death metaphors and a poststructuralist critique of authoritative discourse to investigate ways in which Anglo-American literary theorists, poets and writers of fiction have often posited metaphysical authorities as origins for their art in an attempt to remedy the absence signaled by writing. Building on theories suggested by Jacques Derrida and Mikhail Bakhtin, I examine ways in which some literary texts confront the challenge posed by the association of writing with absence while remaining skeptical of authoritative discourse. I argue that James Fenimore Cooper's The Pioneers, Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom!, and Toni Morrison's Beloved can be characterized as American historical romances that challenge the logocentric assumptions of the realist novel tradition and portray authoritative discourse as a repressive social force. All four of these works use metaphors of death and feature epitaphs that symbolize the relationships among death, absence, writing and historiography. First published in a 1771 almanac, the epitaph did not ultimately grace the final resting place of the writer, but the sentiment remains interesting: The body of B. Franklin Printer Like the cover of an old book, its contents torn out, and stripped of its lettering and gilding, lies here, food for worms. But the work shall not be wholly lost; for it will, as he believed, appear once more, in a new and more perfect edition corrected and amended by the Author. He was born Jan. 6, 1707. Died 17 B. F. (Stories 137) On the surface, the old inventor's epitaph reflects his humorous wit, his down-to-earth American ethos, and his belief in a heavenly afterlife. He seems utterly unafraid of death, almost as if he is looking forward to that eventuality. His choice of metaphor, however, reveals that more than religious faith girds his courage. A world-famous celebrity during his time, Franklin was assured a place in the history books and could reasonably assume his works would be republished for some time after his undoing. Perhaps this secular 1 faith is the rock on which his "last words" are carved. An advertisement with an unlimited run, the epitaph relies on two age-old cognitive metaphors: first, the popular belief that the body is nothing but a shell, something practical but inconsequential; secondly, the notion that republication is a kind of rebirth or resurrection. Franklin considers the text a manifestation of its author and continual republication a sort of earthly immortality. This writing-as-immortality metaphor has persisted throughout the history of written discourse. To have your thoughts and ideas or even merely your name recorded for posterity is to live forever in the annals of human thought. Epitaphs constitute a qualified democratization of that belief, for even the lowliest member of the middle class has a chance to "live on" in the memory banks of the graveyard. But since its earliest manifestation, writing has also maintained a curious association with loss of memory and has signified the absence or death of the author. In Phaedrus (ca. 370 BCE), Plato depicts a debate regarding the value of writing as opposed to speech. A relatively young art in 5th century BC Greece, writing was subject to the skepticism that any newly-introduced technology invariably suffers. By some, oral discourse was considered preferable and primary with regard to its position in the evolution of human communication and in terms of its proximity to philosophical truth. As Plato argued via the figure of Socrates, oral communication enjoys more accuracy and promise because interlocutors can question one another, guide one another closer to the truth thus, the Socratic dialectic. Effective interpretation of discourse is a process involving both listener and speaker, questions and more questions. According to Plato, "live" dialogue is the only true form of communication; writing, with its deathly silence, produces only confusion. Socrates argues: Writing, Phaedrus, has this strange quality, and is very like painting; for the creatures of painting stand like living beings, but if one asks them a question, they preserve a solemn silence. And so it is with written words; you might think they spoke as if they had intelligence, but if you question them, wishing to know about their sayings, they always say only one and the same thing.     Spenserian satire Spenserian Spenser Sp enser Spenser Spenser Spenserian satire examines the satirical poetry of Edmund Spenser and argues for his importance as a model and influence for younger poets writing satires in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The book focuses on reading satirical texts of the period in relation to one another, with specific attention to the role that Edmund Spenser plays in that literary subsystem, in order to address several distinct audiences. For Spenser scholars, who recognize Spenser’s supremacy in “serious poetry” of the period and have carefully studied his influence on epic, pastoral and lyric poetry, the analysis of Spenser’s reputation as a satirical Spenserian satire poet will contribute to a fuller understanding of Spenser as “the poet’s Spenser poet.” For scholars of satire, the book offers a more detailed discussion and theorization of the type of satire that Spenser wrote, “indirect satire,” A tradition of indirection than has been provided elsewhere. Spenser’s satire does not fit well into the categories that have been used to taxonomize satirical writing from HILE the classical era up to the eighteenth century, but including him with the Sp complaint tradition is also imprecise. A theory of indirect satire benefits ense not just Spenser studies, but satire studies as well. For scholars of English Renaissance satire in particular, who have tended to focus on the formal verse satires of the 1590s to the exclusion of more r indirect forms such as Spenser’s, this book is a corrective, an invitation to recognize the influence of a style of satire that has received little attention.

    1 Robert Emmet, by Dion Boucicault, 1884. A Drama in Four Acts Entitled Robert Emmet A faithful history of a young Irish gentleman who sought the fat of those enthusiasts destined to bear upward and onward “the banner with the strange device.” The first appearance of Robert Emmet before the world was on July 23rd, in the year 1803. He lived for 69 days. His career was completed within that period. He died on September 20th, aged 26. We possess records of what took place during those sixty-nine days. His private correspondences, his adventures, his speeches, his conversations with friends, have been preserved. I have read them all. This play is simply composed of the incidents that occurred during this brief but eventual period, nothing added, but what is necessary to shape the matter into a perspicuous and dramatic form. The characters are untouched photographs of the originals. The language, especially that of Emmet, has been as far as possible preserved, and the sentiments put into his mouth are ascribed to him by those who know him well. It all happened so recently that we seem to reach him with our lives. My father, S. Boucicault, of Bachelor’s Walk, Dublin, was one of his associates, and the house in which twenty years afterwards I was born, was amongst many others, searched for the fugitive rebel. The severest judges of Robert Emmet, those who condemned his objects and abhorred his political aims and principles, have testified freely to the purity of his motives and to the heroic romance of his character.

Cassidy 2016 Acknowledgements During my last year in graduate school, I went on a “final” research trip to Anishinaabe places in western Michigan. I started in Hart and worked my way up to Petoskey, stopping at various county seats to look at government records and land deeds. On my first day, while I was doing research at the County Clerk’s office in Hart, a man wearing a veteran’s ball cap walked in and requested information about several individuals whose last names—associated with Euro- Odawa fur trading families—caught my attention. As he waited for the vital records, he asked why I was sitting in a corner with giant books and we began talking. He knew about the Odawaag in Company K that I was researching and he said he was a descendent of a Company K soldier. We talked about the Odawa soldiers but our conversation quickly turned to contemporary Odawa politics. This dissertation is comprised of many such conversations—both fortuitous and planned—and the encouragement and generosity of many. I would not have written a dissertation on indigenous peoples if I had not taken Michael Witgen’s American Indian history class as an undergraduate.
