OCMA Announces the 2017 California-Pacific Triennial Artists
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 28, 2016 Media Contact: Kirsten Schmidt [email protected] | 949.759.1122 ext 207 OCMA Announces the 2017 California-Pacific Triennial Artists With a focus on the Built Environment, 25 artists and artists’ collectives from 12 countries around the Pacific Rim have been selected to participate in the exhibition On view May 6 through September 3, 2017 NEWPORT BEACH, CA—The Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) today announced the names of 25 artists and artists’ collectives whose work will appear in the 2017 California-Pacific Triennial: Building As Ever. This is the second iteration of the program that places important California art practices within those from countries surrounding the Pacific Ocean. California’s geographical position on the Pacific Ocean has long enriched its cultural prominence, and the demographics of the state are strongly linked to the diverse countries along the Pacific Rim. With a focus on the topic of architecture and the temporal precariousness of the built environment, OCMA Senior Curator Cassandra Coblentz selected the final artists from the US and 11 other countries around the Pacific Ocean. When we opened our doors in 1914, works by artists such as Childe Hassam—one of America’s most prominent contemporary painters at the time—hung in the galler- ies, and since then, MAM has consistently exhibited and acquired recent art. -

2014 2018 YearArt + Practice, Leimert Park, Los5 Angeles, CA In year 5 of Art + Practice’s history, we are proud to share highlights from 2018, information about free upcoming exhibitions for 2019, and thoughts from our friends, supporters and collaborators about their involvement with A+P and its programs thus far. To date, A+P has organized 12 exhibitions, 35 public programs, 2 foster youth round table discussions, and 1 exhibition walkthrough with our Foster Youth; hired 7 foster youth interns in collaboration with our foster youth service provider First Place for Youth; collaborated with 4 museums to organize our contemporary art programs; co-organized 4 exhibitions, which traveled to museum institutions for other communities to enjoy, including Baltimore, MD, Nashville, TN and Waltham, MA, and others; and welcomed nearly 1,000 students and teachers to our exhibition space to participate in A+P’s education program. Admission to all programming remains free. A+P has also built out a temporary exhibition space; constructed a public program space, foster youth classroom and office space; and established an administrative office with a 6,000-square-foot permanent exhibition space below, including a main gallery and video room. Five years have flown by, and we thank you for your ongoing support of A+P's mission and programs. We look forward to seeing what's in store for the next 5 years. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 30, 2015 Grand Arts Presents GLENN KAINO TANK April 17 - June 6, 2015 OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, April 17, 6-9PM ARTIST TALK: Saturday, April 18, 2PM ABOUT TANK Grand Arts is pleased to present Tank, an exhibition by Glenn Kaino, on view April 17 – June 6, 2015. Tank is the result of a three-year research collaboration between Kaino and Grand Arts, with assistance from Aquamoon (Chicago), and academic and hobbyist coral husbandry experts throughout the United States. The centerpiece of the exhibition is an installation of eleven acrylic vitrines, each of which houses a colony of living corals cultivated from fragments and grown for over a year on individual resin casts from a decommissioned US M-60 military tank. A version of Tank, also produced by Grand Arts, premiered at Prospect.3 New Orleans in fall 2014. Tank is inspired in part by Reef-Ex, a U.S. government program in place since the 1990’s, which involves the dumping of outdated military tanks into coastal waters in order to create artificial reefs and fish habitats. Says Kaino: I saw a poetic contradiction in the notion that some of the smallest organisms in the world were reclaiming the instruments of much larger organisms. Corals are fascinating to me because they are reactionary and survive by responding to need but also to instinct. They have an embedded memory and programming that requires a battle with other corals for territory. Fighting is in their nature, but one would not see this unless they were trained to. 1 At Grand Arts, Kaino’s delicate living sculptures enact these slow and silent battles for territory through largely invisible chemical warfare. -

Engineering has successfully completed the planning for the viaduct, which will create a unique and iconic addition to L.A.’s skyline and River. The bridge’s art elements are also moving forward with the selection of artist Glenn Kaino to provide art design services as part of the new Sixth Street Viaduct. Kaino was selected from a strong group of local and international candidates, and he has family connections to both Boyle Heights and the Arts District. Kaino’s creative process and experience with large-scale projects won over the Artist Selection Committee, along with his local roots and understanding of the surrounding communities’ importance to the bridge’s identity. Councilmember Huizar also announced he is committed to identifying funds to pay for a soccer field below the bridge to support his and the community’s wishes to make the bridge a destination point. -
