ANGUS CYCLING ROUTES Kirriemuir to Loch of Lintrathen 15 ROUTE ROUTE DESCRIPTION Starting in Kirriemuir town centre, head south west on Tannage Brae into Knowehead and at Lindsay Street/Slade Road junction turn right. At junction B951 turn left signposted Kirkton of Glenisla. Follow this road past Loch of Kinnordy to Kirkton of Kingoldrum. After leaving Kirkton of Kingoldrum bear left at junction and follow this road for 3 miles/4.8km. At junction bear right towards Loch of Lintrathen. At T junction turn right, cross bridge and continue for 200m then turn right signposted Glenisla. Follow this road, turning left at junction B951 then left at junction signposted Craigisla to circuit the loch. At junction bear left and return to Bridgend of Lintrathen. This time carry on over the bridge to junction B951. Turn right towards Kirkton of Kingoldrum and carry on. After 3.5miles/6km, bear left at junction towards Kinnordy. After 1.5miles/2.5km at junction turn right and continue to junction Cortachy Road Kirriemuir. Go straight on into Kinnordy Road and follow this street back to Kirriemuir town centre. Points of interest on this route include Loch of Kinnordy and Loch of Lintrathen. www.visitangus.com/cycling .

Maritime Trail Walk in the steps of your ancestors www.angusheritage.com The Angus coastline is about 35 miles long, from north of Montrose to the outskirts of Dundee. When roads were poor, goods and people were carried along the coast by ship, and over a dozen distinct communities in Angus made their living from the vibrant and bustling coast. But the sea could be dangerous and unpredictable and many lives were lost through shipwrecks and storms. All Angus coastal settlements began as small villages, with residents earning part of their income from fishing. This fluctuated over time. Fishing villages grew if the conditions were right. Boats needed to be safe when not at sea, perhaps sailed into natural inlets on the rocky coast or hauled onto shingle beaches. Families needed ground where they could build houses with easy access to the shore, with somewhere Montrose harbour to land catches, prepare fish for sale and maintain boats, nets and lines. Houses could be built on narrow plots between the sea and coastal cliffs, or above those cliffs, with steep paths leading to the landing area. Some communities built harbours, providing shelter for moored boats and sites for fish markets and other maritime businesses. Montrose is a town that thrived as a seaport Montrose Basin - once known as the Land on the edge of rich farmland. The town’s of Sands - was a source of bait for fishing motto; Mare Ditat, Rosa Decorat (the sea communities along the Angus coastline. Angus Council Strategic Landscape Capacity Assessment for Wind Energy _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________AC3 Typically there is a 150-250m height difference between ridges and the surrounding Dipslope Farmland TAY8: IGNEOUS HILLS and Broad Valley Lowland. This is less to the east of the A90 around Carrot Hill (259m) where the hills are lower, more rounded and merge with the Dipslope Farmland. The Sidlaw Hills are a varied landscape of distinctive, predominantly steep open hills and enclosed valley farmland that extends through Perth & Kinross and Angus, where they merge into the Dipslope This landscape varies around a medium scale; from enclosed valley farmland to larger open heather/ Farmland and Forfar Hills. The hills provide a northern backdrop to Dundee and define the southern grassland hillsides and ridges. Whilst the highest hills have an open, upland character, the majority of edge of Strathmore to the north. smaller hills have a more lowland character, particularly when compared with the highlands visible to the north across Strathmore. Visit Scotland’s Birthplace World War I Heritage Trail Walk in the steps of your ancestors www.visitangus.com Every parish in Angus has at least one memorial to the servicemen and women who fell during the Great War. Memorials were created by communities, schools and churches, amongst others. Some are on public view whilst others are behind closed doors. It took a few years for grieving and war weary communities to decide upon an appropriate memorial, raise funds and gather names for inclusion. Some towns ran design competitions for their memorials; others found it difficult to agree on the site for such an important venture. A number debated whether a memorial was appropriate and suggested a centre for ex- servicemen might be a better choice. Memorials were funded by public subscriptions, usually organised by a committee of administrative and social leaders of local society. They steered the project to completion, from collecting the names to appear on a memorial to the unveiling ceremony. In addition to the main war memorials, many communities such as schools and churches raised their own memorials and details of these can be found at www.visitangus.com/heritage- trails The VCs of Angus Three men from Angus were awarded the highest military decoration, the Victoria Cross. Charles Jarvis and George Samson were associated with Carnoustie and Charles Melvin lived for most of his life in Kirriemuir. All 3 VCs will be commemorated by special paving stones. The first was installed near the entrance to Carnoustie Championship Golf Course on 23 August 2014 in memory of Charles Jarvis.
