A Note from the Local First Program Manager Dear fellow Localist, When I first sat down to draft this letter, it was early March. I don’t need to point out how much has changed since then, but one thing remains the same: putting local first means putting people first. And our local business community needs us now, more than ever. The strength of our economy depends on keeping our dollars here, in West Michigan. As you (safely) visit the places in this book, I encourage you to thank the establishments for being Local First members. It’s because of them that Local First can continue our work. Are you visiting? Check out our restaurants, retail, arts, and entertainment. Are your new to Michigan? Use this book to find your new dentist, vet office, hairdresser, and more. Are you a business? Localize your supply chain with the companies listed here – or become a member and be listed alongside them! Communities that have a high percentage of local ownership are stronger by nearly every economic indicator. Exams will now run from Monday through Saturday on exam week. Saturday exams will only apply to those with Saturday classes. Student senate President Todd Green, who sits on UAS, said that the move was made to insure that all exams had meeting times. “There were something like 130 exams with no place to go,” Green said. 1994-1995 school year is Green also tried to amend the proposal to keep the Monday of exam week free of close at hand, and despite busy schedules, exams, but was overridden by faculty and students still found time to enjoy the beauti­ staff.

OF GRAND RAPIDS JUNE 2021 New Holocaust Memorial at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park Generously Given by The Pestka Family The Jewish Federation of Grand Rapids has received a generous gift from the Pestka Family in memory of their father Henry, a Holocaust survivor, and the millions of other Jews who perished in the Holocaust. Henry Pestka was born in Poland, and deported to the Auschwitz death camp as a young man. Henry managed to escape during a death march, and joined the Free French in the fight against the Nazis. After the war ended, Henry immigrated to the United States and settled in Grand Rapids. The gift will be used to establish the first Holocaust memorial in Grand Rapids, to be located at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. The selected sculpture, by Israeli artist Ariel Schlesinger, is titled Ways to Say Goodbye. It is an exceptional work of contemporary sculpture dealing with themes of profound loss and grief, and will serve to memorialize the millions who perished in the Holocaust and the Holocaust survivors of Western Michigan. About the Artist Ariel Schlesinger (b. 1980, Jerusalem) reveals the poetry, poignancy and potential of everyday things. Through precise interventions, creative engineering and trompe l’oeil, Ariel Schlesinger’s work challenges our perceptions and encourages us to look at the familiar in new ways. While the business’s success is notable, also significant are second-generation owners, Fred and Lena Meijer. The ripples of their philanthropic pursuits can be felt across the state today.
