THE LEGACY OF HENRY MARTYN TO THE STUDY OF INDIA'S MUSLIMS AND ISLAM IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Avril A. Powell University of Lincoln (SOAS) INTRODUCTION: A biography of Henry Martyn, published in 1892, by George Smith, a retired Bengal civil servant, carried two sub-titles: the first, 'saint and scholar', the second, the 'first modern missionary to the Mohammedans. [1]In an earlier lecture we have heard about the forming, initially in Cambridge, of a reputation for spirituality that partly explains the attribution of 'saintliness' to Martyn: my brief, on the other hand, is to explore the background to Smith's second attribution: the late Victorian perception of him as the 'first modern missionary' to Muslims. I intend to concentrate on the first hundred years since his ordination, dividing my paper between, first, Martyn's relations with Muslims in India and Persia, especially his efforts both to understand Islam and to prepare for the conversion of Muslims, and, second, the scholarship of those evangelicals who continued his efforts to turn Indian Muslims towards Christianity. Among the latter I shall be concerned especially with an important, but neglected figure, Sir William Muir, author of The Life of Mahomet, and The Caliphate:ite Rise, Decline and Fall, and of several other histories of Islam, and of evangelical tracts directed to Muslim readers. I will finish with a brief discussion of conversion from Islam to Christianity among the Muslim circles influenced by Martyn and Muir. But before beginning I would like to mention the work of those responsible for the Henry Martyn Centre at Westminster College in recently collecting together and listing some widely scattered correspondence concerning Henry Martyn. -

Redacted for Privacy Abstract Approved: Elaine Pedersen Cultural authentication is a concept that was developed by Erekosima (1979), Erekosima and Eicher (1981), and Eicher and Erekosima (1980, 1995) to aid in the description of the transfer of artifacts from one culture to another. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the development of belly dance costume in the United States is an example of cultural authentication and, in so doing, further test and refine the concept of cultural authentication. Contemporary belly dance costume in the United States was described after conducting field research of the belly dance community over a period of ten months. The history of belly dance and its associated costume in America was explored through the review of previous historical research. Belly dance and its associated costume in the United States was then analyzed in terms of cultural authentication by addressing a series of seven questions. These seven questions were formulated to determine whether the four levels of cultural authentication (selection, characterization, incorporation, and transformation) occurred, and whether they occurred in that order. Contemporary belly dance costume in the United States was classified into two categories: replicated and creatively interpreted. The dancer who wears replicated costumes believes that he/she is imitating, to the best of his/her ability, a documented style of dress worn by a specific ethnic group, at a specific time, within the areas of the Near and Middle East. -

` Semantic Innovation and Change in Kuwaiti Arabic: A Study of the Polysemy of Verbs Yousuf B. AlBader Thesis submitted to the University of Sheffield in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics April 2015 ABSTRACT This thesis is a socio-historical study of semantic innovation and change of a contemporary dialect spoken in north-eastern Arabia known as Kuwaiti Arabic. I analyse the structure of polysemy of verbs and their uses by native speakers in Kuwait City. I particularly report on qualitative and ethnographic analyses of four motion verbs: dašš ‘enter’, xalla ‘leave’, miša ‘walk’, and i a ‘run’, with the aim of establishing whether and to what extent linguistic and social factors condition and constrain the emergence and development of new senses. The overarching research question is: How do we account for the patterns of polysemy of verbs in Kuwaiti Arabic? Local social gatherings generate more evidence of semantic innovation and change with respect to the key verbs than other kinds of contexts. The results of the semantic analysis indicate that meaning is both contextually and collocationally bound and that a verb’s meaning is activated in different contexts. In order to uncover the more local social meanings of this change, I also report that the use of innovative or well-attested senses relates to the community of practice of the speakers. The qualitative and ethnographic analyses demonstrate a number of differences between friendship communities of practice and familial communities of practice. The groups of people in these communities of practice can be distinguished in terms of their habits of speech, which are conditioned by the situation of use. -

The Judgement of God. Migration Aspirations and Sufi-Islam in Urban Senegal
PhiN-Beiheft 18/2019: 284 Sebastian Prothmann (Bamako) Ndogalu Yàlla – The Judgement of God. Migration Aspirations and Sufi-Islam in Urban Senegal Based on ethnographic research in Pikine, an urban area within the Dakar region, I argue that theistic predetermination plays a pivotal role in migration aspirations of young men in urban Senegal. At- tainments within this religious popular belief such as successful migration or material wealth are believed to depend on wërsëg (luck) predetermined by one's fate (Ndogalu Yàlla). Likewise, the phenomenon of irregular migration from Senegal to Europe is similarly perceived: 'Barça wala Bar- sakh' (Barcelona or die) is what young people in coastal Senegal used to call this form of migration. However, I will show that young men handle their fate proactively, as they accept the risks and uncertainties of migration at all costs. With their courageous behaviour and fearless acceptance of even life-threatening obstacles during irregular migration, young men show determination to chal- lenge their destiny while trying to positively define and strengthen both their masculine and their religious identities. Introduction When I visited Pikine and Dakar in 2010 for the first time, I was astonished by the proliferation of religious symbols throughout the public space. Mural paintings and sophisticated colourful glass paintings, so-called suweer, with portraits of famous religious persons, particularly Cheikh Amadou Bamba,1 Cheikh Ibrahima Fall,2 El Hadj Malick Sy,3 Ibrāhīm Niass4 or other important sheikhs, have sprouted all over the town. The noteworthy proliferation of iconic Sufi representations is significant for their status as well as to their infiltration and penetration in urban Senegalese 1 Cheikh Amadou Bamba, often called Sériñ Tuubaa (Cheikh of Touba), was the founder of the Murid brotherhood. -

This study developed a formal curriculum unit which introduced a traditional women’s craft into the art curriculum for girls in Kuwait. The aim was to use art history to increase their understanding of their cultural heritage and of their female identities and roles in society. The action research methodology involved collaboration with three local primary art teachers, a professional weaver and a Kuwaiti education expert. -
