Riverside, Middlesbrough Thursday, 27 April 2006 - 20:02 local time Semi-finals - Matchday 15

Middlesbrough FC will be seeking a hat-trick, of sorts, when they attempt to overcome a 1-0 deficit against FC Steaua Bucuresti at the in the second installment of their UEFA Cup semi-final tie. Steve McClaren's men also lost away games in the previous two knockout rounds, but prevailed by virtue of some imperious home form, most memorably in the quarter-finals when completed a stunning comeback in the last minute against FC Basel 1893.

•Nicolae Dica scored the only goal of the first leg at the Lia Manoliu stadium with a fine strike on the half-hour mark as the 1986 European champions maintained their unbeaten home record against English opposition. Cosmin Olaroiu's team could have gone on to win by more but missed a host of opportunities and, with Sorin Paraschiv and Banel Nicolita now suspended for the second match after picking up bookings, the tie hangs in the balance.

•Middlesbrough are formidable opponents on Teeside, and their home form has been key to their progress so far. A solitary Yakubu Ayegbeni goal saw the north-east outfit edge a 1-0 win against AS Roma at the Riverside, and although Mancini scored twice in the return, 's strike guided Middlesbrough through on the away-goals rule.

•Basel were their reward in the last eight and a semi-final berth looked a forlorn hope when Eduardo scored to extend the Swiss team's lead to three goals at the Riverside, after the first leg ended 2-0. It proved the cue for a famous comeback, as goals either side of half-time from Mark Viduka resurrected the home side's hopes. Substitute Hasselbaink made it 3-3 on aggregate with a blistering strike to set up Maccarone's thrilling finale.

•Middlesbrough had previously glided through the group stage, topping their section after three wins and a draw. A 2-2 away-goals win against VfB Stuttgart followed, with a 2-1 victory in proving decisive.

•Steaua's early progress mirrored that of their semi-final opponents as they finished top of their section after an unbeaten campaign which included comprehensive home wins against RC Lens and Halmstads BK. dealt them their first home defeat of the campaign, 1-0, in the second leg of their last-32 tie but Steaua's 3-1 victory in the first encounter in the proved insurmountable. •In the next round, Steaua's tie with Balompié hung in the balance after a goalless draw in the first encounter. But two stunning strikes from Banel Nicolita helped them to a 3-0 victory in the return in . The southern Spanish city was also the scene of their greatest triumph, when they lifted the 1985/86 European Champion Clubs' Cup.

•Nicolita was again on target in the quarter-finals against city rivals AFC Rapid Bucuresti, scoring after just five minutes of the first leg at the Giulesti stadium. Viorel Moldovan's 50th-minute strike earned Rapid a share of the spoils but a goalless draw in the return saw Steaua through. •Still in only their second season of UEFA club competition, Middlesbrough had never before met Romanian opponents, but Steaua can count on the experience of four recent encounters with Premiership opposition. •It started promisingly for the Romanian team, who took a 2-0 lead in their first meeting with Aston Villa FC at home in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup third round, but reduced the deficit before the end and Brian Little's team, who included current Middlesbrough defender Ugo Ehiogu in their ranks, prevailed in the return. •Their next two meetings, against West Ham United FC in 1999/00 and Southampton FC four years later, proved more successful as home wins and away draws saw them negotiate the early rounds of the UEFA Cup. The Southampton triumph earned a second-round meeting with Liverpool FC, where their aspirations were ended as Harry Kewell scored the only goal of the return at Anfield after a 1-1 first-leg draw. •While Steaua remain unbeaten on home territory against English opposition, with four wins and one draw, their away results are less impressive, with two draws and two losses.

Club facts: Middlesbrough •Middlesbrough FC are making their second consecutive appearance in UEFA competition having advanced to the Round of 16 in last season's UEFA Cup.

•Boro made their debut in UEFA competition only last season when overcoming Czech side FC Baník Ostrava 4-1 on aggregate in the first round of the competition to book their place in the group stage.

•A confident start left Middlesbrough with six points from their first two outings – a 1-0 victory away to Greek side Egaleo FC thanks to Stewart Downing's 78th-minute goal followed by a 2-0 home success at the expense of S.S. Lazio. On this occasion, stole the headlines with goals after 16 and 71 minutes. •Though Middlesbrough were defeated 2-0 in their third group engagement away to Villarreal CF, they bounced back and secured their place in the knockout stages with a 3-0 defeat of FK Partizan with goals from Szilárd Németh (10), Joseph-Desiré Job (22) and James Morrison (90). •Austrian side Grazer AK were Middlesbrough's opponents in the Round of 32 with the English side prevailing 4-3 on aggregate. A 2-2 draw in with goals from Dutch duo Zenden (52) and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (66) was followed by a 2-1 victory at home after Graz had taken the lead through Mario Bazina after eight minutes. Middlesbrough responded through Morrison (18) and Hasselbaink (60).

•But eventual losing finalists Sporting Clube de proved an entirely different proposition. The Portuguese side raced into a three-goal lead at the Riverside stadium and though Job and Chris Riggott reduced the deficit late on, Sporting were able to hold on at the Estádio José Alvalade in the return, eventually winning 1-0 thanks to Pedro Barbosa's 89th-minute winner. 2005/06 season •UEFA Cup first round: Middlesbrough finished last season's English Premiership campaign in seventh position, thereby claiming the last qualifying berth for the 2005/06 UEFA Cup. The English side entered the competition at the first round stage, defeating Xanthi FC 2-0 on aggregate with both goals coming in the opening leg at the Riverside stadium from George Boateng (28) and Mark Viduka (83). •UEFA Cup group stage: Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's early goal ensured Middlesbrough got their 2005/06 UEFA Cup group stage campaign off to a winning start as the English visitors held firm in the face of a determined effort from Grasshopper- Club at the Hardturm stadium. •The English side made it two wins from two as Mark Viduka (50, 56) scored a swift double early in the second half to add to Yakubu Ayegbeni's (36) first-half strike and help Middlesbrough to a 3-0 home win at the expense of FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on Matchday 2.

•On Matchday 3, Middlesbrough became the first team to book a place in the UEFA Cup knockout stages after a battling goalless draw against last season's semi-finalists AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands. The English Premiership outfit went into the game knowing that a point would be enough to seal a place in the last 32 after recording victories in their first two fixtures. But they had Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones, deputising for injured compatriot Mark Schwarzer, to thank after the 23-year-old made a series of saves to deny a side that had not failed to score in six previous games at the Alkmaarderhout.

•Having sat out Matchday 4, two late goals from Massimo Maccarone (79, 86), including a spectacular long-range effort, secured Middlesbrough a 2-0 victory against PFC Litex Lovech on Matchday 5 and sent the English Premiership side into the Round of 32 as group winners with three wins and a draw from their four matches which included six goals scored and none conceded. •UEFA Cup knockout stage: Middlesbrough advanced to the last 16 by defeating VfB Stuttgart on away goals after the sides shared a 2-2 aggregate draw. The English side won the opening leg 2-1 in Germany with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (20) and Stuart Parnaby (46) on the scoresheet. Danijel Ljuboja (86) would later reduce the deficit for Stuttgart in that match and they then went on to win at the Riverside stadium in the return leg through Christian Tiffert's goal after 13 minutes only to see the English side hold out for an away goals qualification. •Middlesbrough reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals for the first time after holding on to eliminate AS Roma on away goals, with Hasselbaink's (32) first-half header at the

Stadio Olimpico ultimately proving decisive as the sides shared a 2-2 aggregate draw. The English team travelled to Rome with a 1-0 advantage and took a firm grip on the tie in the 32nd minute when Hasselbaink nodded them in front. Mancini (43, 66pen) brought Roma back into the contest before half-time, however, and when the same player levelled the aggregate scores from the penalty spot just past the hour it ensured a tense finale, but the English side prevailed. Yakubu Ayegbeni's 12th-minute penalty had earlier been the difference between the two sides from their opening leg meeting in England.

•Substitute Massimo Maccarone (90) scored a dramatic winning goal seconds before the final whistle as Middlesbrough sealed a 4-3 aggregate win, to reach the UEFA Cup semi-finals for the first time after a rousing second-half fightback against FC Basel 1893. The Swiss side always looked in control, having earned a 2-0 victory on home soil in the first leg, and their grip on the tie was further strengthened by Eduardo's (23) close- range finish midway through the first half. Mark Viduka (33, 57) struck twice either side of half-time to breathe fresh life into the Middlesbrough's challenge, however, and when Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink (79) found the net with a thunderous strike moments after the dismissal of Basel's Swedish defender Daniel Majstorovic, the momentum was with the home side. With time almost up, Maccarone slid in the winning goal from a tight angle to crown a remarkable comeback.

Club facts: Steaua •This is FC Steaua Bucuresti’s third consecutive appearance in UEFA club competition and their 20th appearance in UEFA club competition in the past 22 seasons having missed out in 2000/01 and 2002/03. •It is also their 36th overall appearance in UEFA club competition since debuting as CCA Bucuresti in the first round of the 1957/58 European Champion Clubs' Cup.

•Steaua also featured in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup, advancing past the group stage before being eliminated in the Round of 16 by Villarreal CF 2-0 on aggregate.

•The Romanian side’s greatest moment to date in UEFA club competition came on 7 May 1986 when they defeated FC 2-0 on penalties after the sides remained scoreless during 120 minutes of the 1985/86 European Champion Clubs’ Cup final. For the record, Marius Lacatus and Gavril Pelé Balint were the only scorers in the shoot- out. •They would qualify once more for the final three years later but found AC Milan too strong as they were on the receiving end of a 4-0 defeat at Barcelona’s . 2005/06 season •UEFA Champions League qualifying: Having won last season’s Romanian Divizia A by a point from cross-city rivals FC Dinamo Bucuresti, Steaua took their place in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round where they overcame

Dublin-based Shelbourne FC 4-1 on aggregate. All of the goals came in the second leg in the Romanian capital which also witnessed three red cards being issued. Steaua broke the deadlock after 18 minutes through Banel Nicolita before adding a second nine minutes later from Victoras Iacob. Although reduced the deficit after 38 minutes, second-half substitute Laurentiu Dinita put the game beyond the Irish side after 61 minutes before he was sent off in the last minute. With nine playing ten, Steaua still added to their tally as Daniel Oprita scored from the penalty spot four minutes into stoppage time. •Next up were Norway’s champions, Rosenborg BK, in the third qualifying round. The two sides shared a 1-1 draw in with Constantin Iacob putting the home side ahead after 30 minutes only for Norwegian international striker Thorstein Helstad to equalise five minutes from time. Rosenborg took control in the return leg in Trondheim as they raced to a three-goal lead thanks to the efforts of Jan Gunnar Solli (38), Alexander Ødegaard (57) and the misfortune of Mirel Radoi (60) who put through his own net. But Radoi (74) atoned for his error and when Iacob (76) added a second for the visitors, Rosenborg had to dig deep to keep the hopes of taking a group stage berth alive. But deep they dug to advance to the group stage while Steaua consoled themselves with a place in the UEFA Cup first round.

•UEFA Cup first round: Steaua faced Norwegian opposition once more as Vålerenga IF, the team that had finished second on goal difference to Rosenborg in the 2004 Tippeligaen, attempted to block their passage to the group stage. The Romanian side returned to Norway for the first leg and effectively put the tie beyond doubt with a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Mirel Radoi (24), Iacob (35) and (74). The return leg was equally one-sided as Steaua once more scored three through Nicolae Dica (30), Gabriel Bostina (41) and Iacob (48) before Vålerenga grabbed a consolation goal from Bernt Hulsker (55).

•UEFA Cup group stage: Steaua opened the group campaign in positive fashion with a 4-0 defeat of French side RC Lens in the Romanian capital. Dica (43, 63) scored in either half, although the initial strikes were provided by Iacob (13) and Goian (16). The last time Steaua won by four goals or more at home in a European club competition came in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup first round when Irish side Bohemian FC were on the receiving end of a 4-0 defeat. •The Romanian side retained top spot following a 0-0 draw away to UC Sampdoria in Genoa on Matchday 2. Steaua dominated the first half and though the home side eventually asserted themselves during the second 45 minutes, neither side could fashion a goal. •Steaua progressed to the knockout stages with consummate ease after inflicting a fourth consecutive UEFA Cup Group C defeat on Halmstads BK at the Ghencea stadium on Matchday 4. Goals from Radoi (11), Goian (63) and Iacob (71) did the damage in a game that the Romanian side dominated.

•Hertha BSC Berlin and Steaua then settled for a scoreless draw in the German capital on Matchday 5, as the Bundesliga outfit joined the visitors in the knockout stages of the

UEFA Cup. •UEFA Cup knockout stage: Steaua advanced to the last 16 of the competition by defeating Dutch side, SC Heerenveen, 3-2 on aggregate. The seeds of Steaua's success were sewn in the Netherlands where they recorded a 3-1 win in the opening leg thanks to goals from Dica (29), Goian (76) and Sorin Paraschiv (78). Arnold Bruggink scored in both legs for Heerenveen but Steaua prevailed. •Banel Nicolita's stunning second-half strike set Steaua on course for a 3-0 second leg victory against ten-man Real Betis Balompié to book a place in the UEFA Cup quarter- finals. The two sides had shared a scoreless draw in the Romanian capital in the opening leg, but they marked their return to Seville, the city of their greatest triumph, in some style. Steaua lifted the 1985/86 European Champion Clubs' Cup at Sevilla FC's Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium nearby, defying the odds to defeat FC Barcelona 2-0 on penalties. Almost 20 years later many of that famous team were at the Manuel Ruíz de Lopera stadium to cheer their successors on and Steaua did not disappoint. The Romanian outfit frustrated Betis for much of the encounter before Nicolita struck a sumptuous opener on 54 minutes. The added his second eight minutes from time, by which time Iacob (78) had also registered for the visitors, but it was the opener that proved pivotal, the away goals rule leaving the home team needing to score twice to keep their hopes alive. •Banel Nicolita's (5) strike in the first leg at the Giulesti stadium proved decisive as Steaua progressed to the semi-finals on away goals following a 0-0 draw against cross- city rivals AFC Rapid Bucuresti. Although Viorel Moldovan (50) would equalise for Rapid in the opening leg, they were unable to find a way past the Steaua rearguard in the return leg at the Lia Manoliu stadium. Domestic news Middlesbrough seek UEFA Cup cure (Monday, 24 April 2006) Having exited one cup competition at the semi-final stage over the weekend, Middlesbrough FC will be desperate to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit as FC Steaua Bucuresti visit the Riverside stadium on Thursday night. The Romanian club are in good form, however, having not conceded a goal in winning their last three matches.

Middlesbrough FC 0-1 West Ham United FC Middlesbrough's hopes of a cup double were ended at Villa Park, Birmingham on Sunday as West Ham reached the FA Cup final thanks to Marlon Harewood's late strike. The forward collected a flick-on from Dean Ashton 12 minutes from time and held off Gareth Southgate to beat Middlesbrough's substitute goalkeeper Brad Jones at the near post. The northeast team created chances throughout, Franck Queudrue heading over a first-half corner, although they lost goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer to a suspected fractured cheekbone shortly before half-time. After Harewood's goal, Queudrue had a free-kick saved by Shaka Hislop while Chris Riggott dragged a shot wide from inside the penalty area in the final minute of added time. "We had plenty of clear-cut chances but we didn't take them and that's why we lost," said manager Steve McClaren, who was able to welcome back captain Southgate after an ankle injury although Australian international Mark Viduka remained sidelined with a thigh problem and Lee Cattermole (ankle), Gaizka Mendieta (foot), Emanuel Pogatetz (head) and Tony McMahon (knee) were all still absent. "It's an FA Cup semi-final and sometimes the best team doesn't win. We have to pick ourselves up. We've got to come back knowing we don't want to feel like this on Thursday. The players know how much it hurts to lose a semi-final. They don't want to feel like that again and nor do I." FC Steaua Bucuresti 3-0 FC Farul Constanta

Steaua coach Cosmin Olaroiu opted to shuffle his pack ahead of Thursday's trip to England, resting six players for Saturday's match against Farul. Defenders George Ogararu, Sorin Ghionea and Petre Marin, midfielders Sorin Paraschiv - suspended for the second leg - and Gabriel Bostina and striker Daniel Oprita all dropped to the bench. Steaua were unable to fashion a first-half breakthrough, so Oprita, Paraschiv and Ogararu were introduced in the second period as the hosts gained control. Banel Nicolita - another banned for the Middlesbrough match - converted Vasilica Cristocea's pass two minutes after the break, then created a second goal for Nicolae Dica ten minutes later. Daniel Balan supplied Nicolita to score his second and Steaua's third 13 minutes from time, keeping Steaua ahead of title rivals FC Dinamo 1848 Bucuresti and AFC Rapid Bucuresti on goal difference. All three sides have 46 points, although Steaua have played two games fewer. "It was a well-deserved victory which boosts our morale for Thursday, which will be the match of all our careers," said general manager Mihai Stoica. The win was Steaua's third consecutive success capped by a clean sheet, following last weekend's 1-0 defeat

of FC Politehnica Iasi and the first-leg triumph over Middlesbrough. Olaroiu had said that his main concern was making sure his players avoided injury, and they successfully negotiated the Farul fixture, even if defender Dorin Goian is suffering from muscle problems.
