Coney Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 8/3/11 11:29 AM Coney Island Coordinates: 40.574416°N 73.978575°W From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Coney Island is a peninsula and beach on the Atlantic Ocean in southern Brooklyn, New York, United States. The site was formerly an island, but became partially connected to the mainland by landfill. Coney Island is possibly best known as the site of amusement parks and a major resort that reached their peak during the first half of the 20th century. It declined in popularity after World War II and endured years of neglect. In recent years, the area has seen the Coney Island peninsula from the air opening of MCU Park and has become home to the minor league baseball team the Brooklyn Cyclones. The neighborhood of the same name is a community of 60,000 people in the western part of the peninsula, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, and Gravesend to the north. Landmarks Preservation Commission March 3, 1992; Designation List 243 LP-1706 F.W.I.L. LUNDY BROTIIERS RESTAURANT BUILDING 1901-1929 Emmons Avenue, Borough of Brooklyn. Built 1934; architects: Bloch & Hesse. Landmark Site: Borough of Brooklyn Tax Map Block 8775, Lot 41. On February 7, 1989, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Lundy Brothers Restaurant and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 11). The hearing was continued to May 16, 1989 (Item No. 4). The hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. A total of fourteen witnesses spoke in favor of designation. The owner and two representatives speaking on his behalf supported the designation with reservations about the timing of the Commission action. The Commission has received many letters and other expressions of support in favor of this designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Summary The F.W.I.L. Lundy Brothers Restaurant Building is the last of the great seafood palaces which once flourished in Sheepshead Bay, a shorefront community known for its fishing fleet and famous eating places. Constructed in 1934 for restaurateur Frederick William Irving Lundy, in conjunction with the government-sponsored redevelopment of the Sheepshead Bay waterfront in the mid-1930s, Lundy's was thought to be one of the largest restaurants in the country when it was completed and remains among the largest restaurant buildings in Brooklyn. Known for its excellent seafood, Lundy's became a major Brooklyn institution which served as many as a million meals a year and is remembered fondly by tens-of-thousands of New Yorkers. -

Investigate more key moments in the history of United States amusement parks in your own state via this link to make local connections to this timeline. http://napha.org/LIBRARY/LOSTAMUSEMENTPARKS(USA)/P ARKSLISTING(USA)COMPLETED INWORK/taBiD/131/Default.aspx 1823 The town of Gravesend authorized the formation of the Coney Island Road and Bridge Company to provide better access to Coney Island and opened the Shell Road (paved with oyster shells) and installed a wooden bridge over Coney Island Creek. 1829 The Coney Island Road and Bridge Company opened the first hotel, Coney Island House. 1845 A tent-covered circular dance platform called the Pavilion was constructed at Coney Island and was considered its first “amusement.” Steamboat service from Manhattan to a pier near the Pavilion at Coney Island was introduced for a fare of 12 1⁄2 cents. 1862 The Coney Island and Brooklyn Railroad opened a horse car line—the first direct rail line into Coney Island. Feltman sold German-style sausages on a bun, a food that became known as the “hot dog.” 1875 Andrew Culver bought out the old Coney Island Road and Bridge Company and ran a steam railroad along its route and built a beachfront terminal. -

In one there is the great roller coaster with its steep humps, the carousel with its chain spokes, the Ferris wheel of spinning cages, the death-ride with crouching motorcyclists, the big top with the clump of trapezes hanging in the middle. The other half-city is of stone and marble and cement, with the bank, the factories, the palaces, the slaughterhouses, the school, and all the rest. -

On March 23, 2010 the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the (former) Coney Island Theater Building, later Shore Theater at 1301 Surf Avenue, Brooklyn, and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 6). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. There were nine speakers in favor of designation including representatives of Councilmember Recchia, the Historic Districts Council, the Municipal Art Society, the Landmarks Conservancy, Coney Island USA, Save Coney Island, and the Coney Island History Project. Summary The seven-story theater and office building recently known as the Shore Theater and originally known as the Coney Island Theater is one of the largest, most substantial structures in Coney Island in Brooklyn and, when it was constructed in 1925, represented the optimistic attitude of that period for the successful year-round development of Coney Island as a premier entertainment district. Seeking to change the atmosphere of the resort from the somewhat seedy aura it had developed in the 19th century into an area of wholesome family amusement, the city constructed the Boardwalk and extended subway service to Stillwell Avenue while private developers built enclosed amusement parks, restaurants and hotels. The Coney Island Theater was part of this redevelopment effort and featured live performances as well as motion picture screenings. -
