Children at Risk, aHouston-based nonprofit, hasreleased its2013 rankingsofthe state’spublic schools, using the most recent data availablefromthe TexasEducation Agency. Schoolswith insufficientta da were excluded. Theratingsinclude 150 high schools, 283 middleschools and 775elementary schoolsinthe eight-countygreater Houstonarea.

To ratethe schools, Children at Risk used aweighted for- mulabased on multipleacademic measures.Schoolswith largerconcentrations of low-income studentsare given an advantagetoaccount forthe impactofpovertyon academic performance. Children at Risk rank ordered the schoolsfrombest to worstand forthe first time awarded letter grades (A,B,C,Dor F) basedontheir performance.
