I would first like to thank my family who encouraged me through every step of this writing process. From discussing my findings over morning coffee with my Dad, to scrambling to find the appropriate medical definitions from my Mom who is a registered nurse. Both of you were vital to helping me gather my thoughts and help me communicate what I was struggling to say. I would like to especially thank my younger brother who had to bear hours of me explaining my research and always checking up on me to ensure I was staying focused. I would also like to thank my Nana and Papa, who fostered my love of history from a young age with their stories. From my first day in History 101 they pushed me to be a better scholar, writer, and person with every assignment. Without their dedication I would never have been able to write this thesis. From insane study guides to grueling tests and a few bad puns in between Dr. Cumiford always kept me on my toes and demanded no less than the best I was capable off. She not only started my love of history but her constant love and support over those years long ago has come to define me not only as a student but also as a historian. V ABSTRACT So Others May Live: The Price of Healthcare in Combat by Robert S. Del Toro “Medics carried more responsibilities than dry feet, salt tablets, syphilis, and puncture wounds,” U.S. Army Medic Ben Sherman stated after reflecting on his tour in Vietnam. On the battlefields of North Africa, Italy, France, and Vietnam, the medics of the U.S. Army Medical Department faced the difficult duty of preserving life while death surrounded them. Their patients were not strangers but, men they had grown close to, they were comrades and family. Analyzing the memoirs and letters of forward medical personnel from the Second World War and the Vietnam War, this thesis analyzes how a medic’s care went beyond the battlefield. Medics were not just the frontline healers that have dominated popular memory but, were men who were responsible for keeping the unit at fighting strength both mentally and physically. This thesis argues that examining caregiving during war allows us to understand the complex nature of the job of a combat medic, the psychological and physical impact of war on those who sought to make spaces of healing surrounded by death. Before battle medics took care of their unit’s everyday health needs. After battle, many medics listened to the fears and confessions of their friends, as if taking on the role of a priest when none could be found. They quickly learned the signs of a traumatic mental break that could cripple a soldier. The men of the Medical Department saw the infantry they supported as more than just patients, with every death or evacuation taking a greater toll on the medic. These factors created an environment where the medics own mental and physical health were pushed to the limits of the human condition. In a military occupational specialty where the casualty rate was more often than not at100%, a medic VI faced the reality that he would either leave the battlefield from an enemies’ bullet or because his own body and mind had reached their limit.     FAITHFUL UNDER FIRE: A BIBLE STUDY AND DEVOTIONAL FOR THE FILM Introduction Hacksaw Ridge, a new film released by Lions Gate Entertainment, Inc., tells the story of Private First Class Desmond Doss, an Army medic who received the nation’s highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor. The MOH decoration is awarded only for conspicuous and personal acts of valor that are unequivocally deemed to be “above and beyond the call of duty.” Desmond Doss was the first conscientious objector to receive that award — and one of only three ever to do so in our Nation’s history. Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, had a personal, deeply held, biblically formed conviction not to kill — or even to carry a weapon. Nevertheless, he voluntarily enlisted in the Army in 1942 as a combat medic so as to fulfill his calling to serve both his country and his fellow soldiers by saving lives rather than taking them. But a significant part of Desmond’s story is the staunch resistance he faced in the U.S. Army — from both his superiors and fellow soldiers alike, who deemed his non-combatant stance to be a guise for cowardice. The manner in which Doss tenaciously holds-onto his Scripturally based beliefs and ultimately proves himself under the most excruciating and even barbaric combat conditions not only makes for gripping drama. It also confronts everyone who similarly holds biblical convictions in a pluralistic or secular “marketplace” with a challenging roadmap for living faithfully in this world as citizens of our Nation while reserving our highest allegiance to the Kingdom of God.

Music in America is heard on radios, in cars, on phones, and in stores. Television commercials feature jingles so viewers can remember the products; radio ads sing phone numbers so that listeners can recall them. In schools, students sing songs to learn subjects like math, history, and English, and also to learn about general knowledge like the days of the week, months of the year, and presidents of the United States. With the amount of music that is available, it is not surprising that music has also made its way into movie theatres and has become one of the primary agents for conveying emotion and plot during a cinematic production.

Academy Award-winning director Mel Gibson’s newly released film, “Hacksaw Ridge,” will undoubtedly earn millions of dollars at the box office and get plenty of award buzz during its opening weekend, but its impact has the potential to extend well beyond Hollywood. The film is based on the extraordinary true story of late DAV life member Desmond Doss, an Army medic who became the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Doss is credited for singlehandedly saving and evacuating 75 wounded men from behind enemy lines, without firing or even carrying a weapon, during World War II’s Battle of Okinawa. “I did a lot of research prior to principal photography because the responsibility I immediately felt taking on the role was palpable,” said Andrew Garfield, who portrayed Doss in the film. “It’s difficult to even attempt to understand who he was and how he was able to do the things that he did with such conviction and bravery and love in his heart through such a horribly violent, traumatizing situation.” While speaking at the 2016 DAV and Auxiliary National Convention in August, Gibson said he intentionally made the battle scenes of the film graphic in order to give viewers a better understanding of the horrors of combat.

    Movie Review: ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ Hacksaw Ridge By Joseph McAleer Catholic News Service NEW YORK – In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells his disciples, “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” That statement is vividly realized in “Hacksaw Ridge” (Summit), which recounts the extraordinary heroism of Army medic Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield) during the Battle of Okinawa in the closing days of World War II. A committed Christian and conscientious objector who refused to bear arms, Doss was nonetheless eager to serve his country. He single-handedly saved the lives of more than 75 wounded soldiers while under constant enemy fire, earning him the Medal of Honor, awarded by Congress. Director Mel Gibson, working from a screenplay by Andrew Knight and Robert Schenkkan, presents his fact-based drama in two parts. The first probes Doss’ childhood and upbringing in rural Virginia, while the second unfolds on Okinawa, atop a jagged cliff nicknamed “Hacksaw Ridge” for the brutality of the Japanese offensive there. War is indeed hell, as Gibson pulls no punches in extreme battle scenes reminiscent of “Saving Private Ryan.” Awash in blood and gore, with heads blown off and soldiers set afire by napalm, the violence is no doubt realistic, but will necessarily restrict this film’s audience to those adults willing to endure such sights. We first meet Desmond as a spirited boy (Darcy Bryce) who is losing a fistfight with his older brother, Hal (Roman Guerriero). Desmond picks up a brick and strikes Hal, knocking him out cold.

It was undertaken in the County of Renfrew, Ontario, Canada where a community paramedicine role has emerged in response to demographic changes and broader health system reform. Qualitative data was collected through direct observation of practice, informal discussions, interviews and focus groups. The crucial role of education in the effective and sustainable implementation of the community paramedicine model was identified as one of four enablers. Traditional paramedicine education programs are narrowly focused on emergency response, with limited education in health promotion, aged care and chronic disease management. Educational programs hoping to include a wider range of topics face the twin challenges of an already crowded curriculum and predominately young students who fail to see the relevance of community primary care content.

(Image by Peter O‟Meara) Abstract: Medical personnel serving with the Defence Forces have contributed to the evolution of trauma treatment and the advancement of prehospital care within the military environment. This paper investigates the stories of an Australian Medical Officer, Sir Neville Howse, and two stretcher bearers, Private John Simpson Kirkpatrick and Private Martin O‟Meara, In particular it describes the gruelling conditions under which they performed their roles, and reflects on the legacy that they have left behind in Australian society. While it is widely acknowledged that conflicts such as World War One should never have happened, as civilian and defence force paramedics, we should never forget the service and sacrifice of defence force medical personnel and their contribution to the body of knowledge on the treatment of trauma. These men and women bravely provided emergency care in the most harrowing conditions possible. However, men like Martin O‟Meara may not have been given the same status in society today as Sir Neville Howse or Simpson and his donkey, due to the public‟s lack of awareness and acceptance of war neurosis and conditions such as post traumatic stress disorder, reactive psychosis and somatoform disorders which were suffered by many soldiers during their wartime service and on their return home after fighting in war.
