PROMPT): JC Williamson (Gilbert & Sullivan Progarms AUSTRALIAN EPHEMERA COLLECTION FINDING AID J.C. WILLIAMSON GILBERT & SULLIVAN PROGRAMS PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAMS AND EPHEMERA (PROMPT) PRINTED AUSTRALIANA JANUARY 2015 James Cassius Williamson was an American actor who immigrated to Australia in the 1870s. Along with business partners, such as William Musgrove, his theatre company became one of the most dominant in colonial Australia. After his death in 1913 the company, now named J.C. Williamson Ltd. continued under the direction of George Tallis and the Tait brothers (who remained involved in the company until the 1970s). J.C. Williamson continued to be one of the biggest theatre companies in Australia throughout the first three quarters of the 20th century. J.C. Williamson held the license for theatres in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and New Zealand (at times more than one theatre in each city). In 1976 the company closed, but the name was licensed until the mid 1980s. This list includes productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas held in J.C. Williamson theatres, as well as those produced by J.C. Williamson and performed in other theatres under venue hire arrangements. CONTENT Printed materials in the PROMPT collection include programs and printed ephemera such as brochures, leaflets, tickets, etc. Theatre programs are taken as the prime documentary evidence of a performance staged by the J.C. Williamson company. In a few cases however, the only evidence of a performance is a piece of printed ephemera. In these cases the type of piece is identified, eg, brochure. The list is based on imperfect holdings and is updated as gaps in the Library’s holdings for these artists are filled. Unless otherwise stated, all entries are based on published programs in the PROMPT collection. ACCESS The J.C. ARRANGEMENT The sole arrangement of this finding aid is chronological based on the start date of each production. All dates are based on evidence in the programs or ephemera, or have been confirmed by accessing newspaper articles and advertisements through Trove. Entries for each program in the main section are arranged as follows: Year of production Title of Production / creator if known Date (day and month) Theatre/venue Headline performers Brief description of item holdings, ie “2 copies of program” An index to headline performers (listing performer’s name, year of appearance and venue), venue and production title is also provided at the end of the document. In this ground-breaking book, Derek B. Scott examines the cultural transfer of operetta from the German stage to Britain and the USA and offers a historical and critical survey of these operettas and their music. In the period 1900–1940, over sixty operettas were produced in the West End, and over seventy on Broadway.     Recitative in the Savoy Operas James Brooks Kuykendall In the early 1870s, London music publisher Boosey & Co. launched a new venture to widen its potential market. Boosey’s repertoire had been domestic music for amateur vocalists and pianists: drawing-room ballads and both piano/vocal and solo piano scores across the range of standard Downloaded from operatic repertory of the day, published always with a singing translation in English and often substituting Italian texts for works originally in French or German. Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, and Verdi, Auber, Meyerbeer, Gounod, and Lecocq, Mozart, Beethoven, Weber, and Wagner all appeared in Boosey’s Royal Edition of Operas series, together http://mq.oxfordjournals.org/ with a handful of “English” operas by Michael William Balfe and Julius Benedict. The new effort supplemented this domestic repertory with one aimed at amateur theatricals: “Boosey & Co.’s Comic Operas and Musical Farces.” The cartouche for this series is reproduced in figure 1, shown here on the title page of Arthur Sullivan’s 1867 collaboration with Francis C. Burnand, The Contrabandista. Seven works are listed as part of the new imprint, although three by guest on May 11, 2013 of these (Gounod, Lecocq, and Offenbach’s Grand Duchess) had been issued as part of the Royal Edition. Albert Lortzing’s 1837 Zar und Zimmermann masquerades as Peter the Shipwright, and it appeared with an English text only. The new series may well have been the idea of Sullivan himself. He had been retained by Boosey since the late 1860s as one of the general editors for the Royal Edition.

    THE GILBERT AND SULLIVAN OPERETTAS ON 78s: COMPLETE SETS AND ABRIDGEMENTS, 1906. 1950 John W. N. Francis In 1877 Richard D'Oyly Carte commissioned Gilbert and Sullivan to write The Sorcerer, and organized an ensemble of singer-actors to perform the new piece under the author's artistic direction. Also in 1877, of course, Charles Cros and Thomas Edison invented sound recording. More than a century later both the music and the medium continue to flourish, and indeed they have come together often and success­ fully--notably in the many complete versions by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which have set standards of style and ensemble for generations of devotees and amateur performers. This discography documents the complete recordings of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas made at 78 rpm, not only by the D'Oyly Carte company or under its aegis, but also by others with lesser claims to authenticity. Also included are substantial abridgements and sets of excerpts--groups of five or more sides made at essentially the same time and place and with the same performers, whether or not they were ever issued collectively or with consecutive numbering. The following comments set the recordings in the context of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company's history. THE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS When Richard D'Oyly Carte died in 1901, his widow Helen assumed manage­ ment of the businesses he had built, including the Savoy Theatre in London and the opera company, which was then on tour. H L Mencken Baltimore Evening Sun, 30 May 1911 If you want to understand Victorian culture and society, then the Gilbert and Sullivan operas are an obvious starting point. They simultaneously epitomised and lampooned the spirit of the age. Their productions were massively successful in their own day, filling theatres all over Britain. They were also a major Victorian cultural export. A new show in New York raised a frenzy at the box office and Harper's New Monthly Magazine (Feb 1886) stated that the "two men have the power of attracting thousands and thousands of people daily for months to be entertained”. H L Mencken's comments of 1911 have proved true. Gilbert & Sullivan societies thrive all over the world and new productions continue to spring up in the West End and on Broadway, in Buxton and Harrogate, in Cape Town and Sydney, in Tokyo and Hong Kong, in Ottawa and Philadelphia. Some of the topical references may now be lost, but the basis of the stories in universal myths and the attack of broad targets such as class, bureaucracy, the legal system, horror and the abuse of power are as relevant today as they ever were.
