Dear Members and Friends of St. Chrysostom’s,

In this season of our congregation’s life we are stepping up the financial care of this community and everything it means to us, the neighborhood, the city of Chicago, and the world.

To be responsible and faithful stewards of our church home, we have three financial objectives:

1) The Annual Campaign to care for the day-to-day ministries that make such a difference to our church community and the wider Chicago community.

2) The Capital Campaign to care for the health of our aging buildings (100+ years old), bringing them up to code so they can continue serving the mission of the church.

3) The Legacy Campaign (or planned giving) to care for the future life and ministry of the St. Chrysostom’s community. Those who make a planned gift in support of the St. Chrysostom’s Endowment Fund are members of the Good Shepherds’ Society. ______

We are at a pivotal time in this, the community phase of our Capital Campaign, and will soon commit to a scope of work to be undertaken in 2021, based on outright gifts and pledges received to date.

Please make your Capital Campaign today.

Members of our Campaign Leadership team would like to discuss our Capital campaign plans with you in further detail. Please contact Fran Caan to set up an appointment at your earliest convenience - [email protected] or 312/944-1083 x 225.

ANTHEM AT THE OFFERTORY A Hymn for St. Cecilia Herbert Howells Sing for the morning’s joy, Cecilia, sing, in words of youth and praises of the Spring, walk the bright colonnades by fountains’ spray, and sing as sunlight fills the waking day; till angels, voyaging in upper air, pause on a wing and gather the clear sound into celestial joy, wound and unwound, a silver chain, or golden as your hair.

Sing for your loves of heaven and of earth, in words of music, and each word a truth; marriage of heart and longings that aspire, a bond of roses, and a ring of fire. Your summertime grows short and fades away, terror must gather to a martyr’s death; but never tremble, the last indrawn breath remembers music as an echo may.

Through the cold aftermath of centuries, Cecilia’s music dances in the skies; lend us a fragment of the immortal air, that with your choiring angels we may share, a word to light us thro’ time-fettered night, water of life, or rose of paradise, so from the earth another song shall rise to meet your own in heaven’s long delight. George Oldroyd (1887-1956) was Organist of St. Michael’s Church, Croyden, England, as well as Teacher of Music Studies at Whitgift School. He composed many Mass settings for St. Michael’s, a prominent Anglo- Catholic parish, and is remembered as a of lyrical and tuneful music, very much in the early 20th century Anglican tradition.

The Choirs sing Herbert Howells’ beautiful and stirring Hymn for St. Cecilia in honor of the patron saint of music’s feast day, celebrated every November 22nd. Commissioned by The Livery Club of the Worshipful Company of Musicians to mark Howells’ Mastership of the Company, 1959-1960, it is written in his forthright and masterful style, setting Ursula Vaughan Williams’ text to music of ever-flowing melody which illumines the words. In three verses, Howells sets a vibrant tune first in unison, then in four parts, and finishing with the unison melody overdight by a brilliant treble descant, the whole accompanied by an imaginative and orchestral organ accompaniment. Ursula Vaughan Williams was an English poet, author, librettist, and biographer of her second husband, composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Conductor and composer Paul Spicer has written of this work: “The wonderful dancing-on-tiptoe nature of this piece takes its cue from the syncopated first vocal entry and each phrase finds increasingly high notes as the verse goes on. It is a classic ‘cumulative’ tune which carries the singer along on a tide of increasing emotional energy and leaves an impression of being a piece much bigger than its component parts.”

Palestrina (1524-1594) one of the greatest for the church and certainly the leading composer of the Roman school, was Maestro of the Capella Giulia, of St. John Lateran, Sta. Maria Maggiore and served several of the most notable popes of the church. His music, of the purest renaissance style and is marked by lyricism and grace.

George Dyson (1883-1964) attended the Royal College of Music, and, after the winning the Mendelssohn Prize, spent several years studying in Italy. After several years as Music Master at Wellington College, and Professor of Composition at the Royal College of Music, he was appointed Director of the Royal College in 1937. He composed many works for the Anglican service, including two settings of the Evening Canticles.

The descant to Hymn 7 is by Richard Hoskins. 12

PARISH & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

MAKING WELCOME: ADVENT CONVERSATIONS “Welcome” is an Old English word meaning “a wished-for guest,” spelled in various ways, common to many languages and in all of them conveys this distinctive sense of “desirability,” and anticipation. WELCOME is the first word in the masthead banner on our parish website, and the bold headline on the first entry under that banner. Like the familiar “Welcome” seen on many an entry doormat, it’s meant to convey hospitality—another word used frequently around here.

But there’s a difference. Hospitality is a “friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.” As such, hospitality entails a kindly disposition, to be sure, but it tends to focus attention on externals: prepared helpfulness, comfortable environment, safe space, adequate food and drink. All of which are important, but neglect the significance of welcome: a state of desire on the part of the host. It’s subtle, to be sure, but most of us know the difference between a cordial acceptance of our presence and an embrace that receives us as the fulfillment of a deep desire for our company.

The central figure of Advent is Mary, mother of Jesus, who by all accounts was in no way anticipating a pregnancy. She had neither husband nor fiancé when visited by an angelic messenger informing her of the divine burden that was her vocation—to bear and birth the long wished-for Messiah. Though she acceded to the task, imagine what it required of her—that she cultivate within herself a genuine desire for his child that was in so many ways an unexpected surprise, whose incursion into her life was a social disgrace, a physical discomfort—and in his dangerous ministry, ignominious trial, and disgraceful death—an emotional heartbreak.

Join us in the Guild Room during the ten o’clock hour on the four Sundays in Advent: December 1, 8, 15 and 22 for reflective conversations led by Sam Portaro, theologian-in-residence, on dimensions of “Making Welcome,” undertaking the work of our hearts, minds, and spirits necessary to a genuine receptivity to others—that subtle but substantive preparation within ourselves that is the difference between hospitality and welcome: receptivity to, and reception of, each person we meet as “a wished for guest,” the incarnate Christ.

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS The tradition of decorating the church with festive greens and flowers is one that delights all ages. Our decorations are funded totally by individual donations. From parishioners and friends. We welcome donations in any amount! This is a great opportunity to honor the memory of departed loved ones, or to celebrate special people and/or occasions of family and friends.

Use18 the convenient “Flowers” envelope in the pew or contact the parish office with your information. Donations will be taken until December 6th.

DONATIONS & VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Help Neighbors in Need Celebrate Their 15th Thanksgiving with a New Name: Our program continues to thrive, thanks to the commitment of time, talent, and treasures from all of you. This month we will be celebrating our program’s 15th Thanksgiving. The emphasis on community has always been the heart and soul of NIN. As we continue to grow, we also continue to tweak the program along the way. To better reflect that sense of family/community that is the heart of our dinners and also to reflect the time we live in that has become more collectively aware of the insensitivities built into our culture, we feel that finding a more inclusive name would be a step in building the framework for our next 15 years. We thought it would be fun to include everyone in the process. To that end, I would like to invite all of you to submit their name suggestions to the Neighbors in Need email address, [email protected]. We will roll out NIN’s new name on the 19th as we celebrate a Thanksgiving meal together.

Jail Ministry: A team under the sponsorship of St. Chrysostom’s conducts worship in the Cook County Department of Corrections (CCDOC ) once quarterly on the fourth Saturday of the month. Our visits have been joyful and encouraging for members of the team, as we have been met with real warmth, gratitude, and powerful and empowering faith. If you are interested in learning more about this ministry, please contact our Parish Office at 312.944.1083 or visit the website at https://www.saintc.org/serving/city/.

Saint Leonard’s Ministries: St. Leonard’s and Grace House are residential facilities supported by our Episcopal Diocese, assisting former prisoners as they reintegrate into society. Every month, an 8 to 12-member group from St Chrysostom's meets with their residents to celebrate birthdays and applaud their accomplishments. Recognition Thursday is held on the last Thursday of each month from 12:30pm to 1:30pm at St Leonard's Ministries in the Michael Barlow Center 2120 West Warren Boulevard. For further information, see slministries.org. To join this outreach ministry or learn more, contact John Craib-Cox at 312-593-6183 or visit the website at https://www.saintc.org/serving/city/.

ReVive Christmas Baskets: Susanna Craib-Cox and Will Bouvel are working together this year on the ReVive Gift Basket Program, fulfilling the requests of families and seniors assigned to us. You can reach Susanna by email or phone - [email protected] or 312.388.3718 - if you would like to participate in the Holiday Gift Basket Program for a family or senior citizen. We appreciate your support and consideration of the program. St. Paul’s, Healdsburg: Our church and community in Healdsburg and the surrounding area are all under evacuation. Bishop Megan, Canon Andrea, and Director of Operations Kati Braak have been in contact with church leadership: the Very Rev. Daniel Green, Dean of the Russian River Deanery and St. John's, Petaluma; the Rev. Sally Hubble, St. Paul's, Healdsburg; and the Rev. Stephen Shaver, Incarnation, Santa Rosa; who are all working to coordinate response and hospitality efforts. We are praying for St. Paul’s, Healdsburg: in gratitude for the ongoing outreach and service that they have for the homeless. St. Paul’s, today, is a center for the homeless to gather for transport to evacuation sites. We pray in hope: that all will be safe in the midst of this crisis. St. Paul’s will hold their Sunday Services at Incarnation, Santa Rosa. We pray for our diocese: as we all bear witness to the risen Christ and share this journey with one another. If people want to help contact Rev. Larry A. Green 312-498- 8535 or [email protected].
