Het is een feit dat de internationale architectuurscène vooral door mannen beheerst wordt. Vrouwen spelen nog al te vaak en onterecht een marginale rol. Toch wisten in het verleden sterke vrouwelijke persoonlijkheden hun stempel op deze discipline te drukken. Denken we maar aan de Ierse meubelmaakster en architecte Eileen Grey (1878-1976), pionier van de International Style, de als eerste in Oostenrijk afgestudeerde architecte Margarete Schütte-Lihozky (1897-2000), ontwerpster van de ‘Frankfurter Küche’ oftewel het prototype van de huidige inbouwkeuken, de Française Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999), die huishoudmachines in het interieur integreerde, en de Braziliaanse Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992), die het Italiaanse rationalisme op een expressionistische manier wist toe te passen.

Ook vandaag verrijken vrouwen het debat over en de productie van architectuur op internationaal niveau. Vaak werken zij in teamverband, zoals Liz Diller voor Diller & Scofidio (New York),A nne Lacaton voor Lacaton & Vassal (Parijs), Annette Gigon voor Gigon & Guyer (Zürich) en Caroline Bos voor UN Studio (Amsterdam). Ze creëren ook onder eigen naam, zoals de Iraanse Zaha Hadid (Londen), de Italiaanse Gae Aulenti (Milaan), de Japanse Kazuyo Sejima (Tokio) en - om een voorbeeld uit onze contreien te noemen - de Belgische Martine de Maeseneer (Brussel). Feit blijft, dat vrouwelijke architecten in de minderheid zijn. Spijtig, want juist vrouwen bezitten het vermogen om aan het rationele van de architectuur een meerwaarde te geven die deze complexe discipline met uitgesproken taktiele, haptische, sfeerbepalende en poëtische elementen vervolmaakt.

Petra Blaisse / Inside Outside De projecten van de Nederlandse interieur- en landschapontwerpster Petra Blaisse en haar atelier ‘Inside Outside’ zijn hiervoor zo goed als exemplarisch. Haar parcours - geboren in Londen en opgegroeid in Lissabon, Wenen, Stockholm en Den Haag - heeft een uitgesproken interdisciplinair karakter. Na haar studies aan kunstacademies in Londen en Groningen werkte ze van 1978 tot 1987 als collectiebeheerder en assistent-curator toegepaste kunst in het Stedelijk Mu- seum Amsterdam. Vervolgens was zij freelance ontwerpster, waarbij ze zich toelegde op het ontwerpen van tentoonstellingen over toegepaste kunsten, wat uitmondde in textieltoepassingen en tuinen landschapsarchitectuur. In 1991 richtte zij haar eigen studio op, Inside Outside, en specialiseerde zij zich in de bijzondere combinatie van zowel interieur- als exterieurontwerp waarbij de architectuur en het landschap zich met elkaar verweven. Inside Outside is vooral bekend van de ontwikkeling van monumentale doeken, niet alleen uniek vanwege hun vorm en afmetingen, maar vooral doordat ze aan de complexe technische eisen voldoen met betrekking tot licht, akoestiek en klimaat.

1. Green Proscenium (in progress) Opvallend in haar werk is de letterlijke zachtheid (het niet-doctrinaire), het vloeibare (het anti-statische), en - zo men wil - de vrouwelijkheid (de fluwelen kracht) waarmee zij licht en geluid, fauna en textiel, beton en glas laat harmoniëren. Het leggen van associatieve verbanden binnen gegeven contexten is een van haar grote kwaliteiten. Dit komt bijzonder goed tot uitdrukking in haar eerste grote monografie (2006), door Irma Boom vormgegeven. Een doorlopende tekst – die de obligate opbouw van een boek in vraag stelt - verbindt de cover naadloos met de plooibare (!) felgroene titelpagina, gevolgd door een reeks sfeerbeelden van bloemen, mos, kwallen en een fontein, om uiteindelijk bij de eerste ‘harde’ feiten te komen: een klimatologische wereldkaart met daarop de plaatsen van al haar projecten.

Petra Blaisse leverde bijdrages aan belangrijke projecten in Europa, Azië en de Verenigde Staten, zowel zelfstandig als in samenwerking met stedenbouwkundigen en architecten als Michael Maltzan (Los Angeles), Macken & Macken (Brussel), Tim Ronalds (Londen), SANAA (Tokio) en UN-Studio (Amsterdam). Haar carrière kreeg een belangrijke impuls door de ontmoeting met Rem Koolhaas, architect en oprichter van O.M.A. (Office for MetropolitanA rchitecture). Samen met O.M.A. werkte Inside Outside aan meer dan twintig projecten wereldwijd, waaronder het Nederlands Danstheater in Den Haag (1988), de Villa dall’Ava in Parijs (1992), het Lille Grand Palais in Rijsel (1994), de Villa Floirac in Bordeaux (1998), het Prada Epicentre in New York (2001), het McCormick Tribune Campus Centre in Chicago (2004), de Seattle Central Library (2004), de Nederlandse Ambassade in Berlijn (2004), het Casa da Música in Porto (2005) en de Università Bocconi in Milaan.

Momenteel werkt Inside Outside aan diverse projecten, waaronder gordijnen voor de Università Bocconi in Milaan, het masterplan en de herinrichting van de Giardini di Porta Nuova in Milaan, het landschapsplan voor het Central Business District in Dubai, de inrichting van tuinen voor Shenzhen Stock Exchange en de permanente tentoonstelling van oude meesters in het Centraal Museum Utrecht.

Radial Views Sinds enkele jaren heeft deSingel zijn architectuurtentoonstellingen voor een deel geherdefinieerd tot tijdelijke ingrepen aan het gebouw zelf. Zo wordt niet alleen een antwoord gegeven op de vraag hoe architectuur an sich tentoongesteld kan worden. Ook wordt het ruimtelijk denken van een bepaalde architect op een zeer directe, aanschouwelijke en fysieke wijze voelbaar en inzichtelijk gemaakt. Na de architecten PAUHOF uit Wenen, SANAA uit Tokio en R&Sie(n) uit Parijs, reageert nu ook de Nederlandse Petra Blaisse op haar manier op de ambivalente ruimtelijke tentoonstelingsvoorwaarden van deze site.

De titel ‘Radial Views’ (oftewel straalsgewijze / stervormige zichten) verwijst niet naar een overkoepelend thema. Het is eerder een standpunt, of juister: meerdere standpunten, die de ontwerpster ten opzichte van het gebouw deSingel inneemt. 2. Cascade Zij presenteert geen werkoverzicht, maar schrijft een scenario voor het gebouw en zijn omgeving, waarin binnen en buiten steeds opnieuw aan elkaar gerelateerd worden. Samen met haar bureau Inside Outside doet zij op de noord-zuidas van de site van deSingel een achttal subtiele architectonische ingrepen die nieuwe aandachtsmomenten voor het gebouw van architect Léon Steynen creëren.

Over Steynens gebouw schreef de Belgische architectuurcriticus Geert Bekaert in 1990: “Het gebouw omvat geen ruimte, maar biedt een podium vol perspectieven. De natuur is er niet om in te verdwijnen, maar om er van op afstand van te genieten”. Een nota die Petra Blaisse als inspiratie gebruikte. Haar interventies doorbreken begrenzingen, zij brengen de omringende natuur naar binnen of halen architecturale details naar de tuin. De verschillende ingrepen van Inside Outside vormen tezamen een traject dat - soms heel duidelijk en soms indirect - de bezoeker van ruimte naar ruimte begeleidt.

‘Radial Views’ is pas de tweede solotentoonstelling van Petra Blaisse, na ‘Movements’ in het New Yorkse Storefront for Art and Architecture (2000). Daarnaast maakte zij al heel wat opdrachtgebonden tentoonstellingen, zoals recent in Haus der Kunst in München (2007) en het Vlaams-Nederlands Huis deBuren in Brussel (2006). Zij nam deel aan groepstentoonstellingen in onder meer de Daegu International Textile Art Exhibition, Korea (2007), Villa Manin Centro d’Arte Contemporanea, Codroipo (I, 2005), de University of California, Los Angeles (USA, 2004), het Deutsches Architektur Museum, Frankfurt a.M. (D, 2002) en ‘Skin’ in het Cooper- Hewitt Museum for Modern Art, New York (2002). Op dit moment is Inside Outside te zien in de tentoonstelling ‘process’ in Riga, Letland (2008).

3. Boundary dismissed Werken in de tentoonstelling

Haar tentoonstelling presenteert geen werkoverzicht. Met een achttal ingrepen op schaal 1:1 reflecteert zij op de site van deSingel en analyseert zij de wisselwerking tussen binnen en buiten, tussen gebouw en omgeving.

1. Green proscenium (in progress) twee plantsoenen bij de hoofdingang elk 1710 x 1110 x 80 cm (l x b x h) 1.300 stuks Lonicera ‘Elegant’, 2 stuks bamboe, dolomiet grint Het traject door het gebouw begint met een ‘groen voortoneel’ bij het parkeerterrein en de hoofdingang. De twee ietwat verwilderde en onverzorgde plantsoenen werden opnieuw aangelegd als strakke geometrische blokken. Ze werden voorzien van een krommend pad en ronde gaten, waardoor de keuze zich aandient om de hoofdingang (het in de titel vermelde ‘voortoneel’) op een tragere manier te bereiken. De uitsneden in de struikenblokken zorgen voor onverwachte doorkijkpunten.

2. Cascade spiegels ingelegd op de treden van de grote trap van de inkomhal PVC spiegelfolie Op de verticale vlakken van de traptreden zijn op onregelmatige wijze stroken van een spiegelend materiaal geplaatst die zowel het licht als de voorbijkomende personen weerspiegelen. De trap wordt tot een waterpartij, een referentie aan de vestinggrachten die vroeger deel uitmaakten van het deSingelterrein.

3. Boundary dismissed tapijtstrook in de vestiaire 4400 x 75 cm (l x b) tapijt type ‘ege highline 910’, geprint, polyamide Parallel met de vestiairebrug, die de twee binnentuinen overspant, is een lange strook tapijt met uitvergrote grassen gelegd. Het prototype van het plantentapijt werd voor het eerst getoond tijdens ‘Movements’, Petra Blaisses solotentoonstelling in Storefront (New York, 2000). Het is nadien ontwikkeld tot een projecttapijt voor Seattle Central Library (2000-2004), waarna het concept verder werd uitgebouwd voor verschillende architecten, bijvoorbeeld voor het nieuwe VIP-ingangsgebouw van de luchthaven van Schiphol.

De rail ontsnapt aan het einde aan de constructie en draait met een elegante bocht de tuin in, waar het gordijn deel gaat uitmaken van andere verticale elementen, zoals de bomen en struiken.

5. Waterdrops hooggepolijstte RVS-schijven in het gras van de binnentuin Ø 100 cm, 3 stuks / Ø 50 cm, 5 stuks / Ø 25 cm, 10 stuks roestvrij staal, collectie Inside Outside In de westelijke patio worden over het grasveld een aantal kleine en grote reflecterende, roestvrij stalen schijven gestrooid, die naargelang het standpunt lucht, gebouw, toeschouwer of planten weerkaatsen, en tegelijkertijd zichten op het binnenste van de aarde suggereren.

6. Instant Park zitkussens met een huid van gras in de binnentuin en op het terras van de wandelgang Ø 150 x 150 x 40 cm / 125 x 125 x40 cm, 9 stuks prototype Inside Outside In de oostelijke patio en op het zuidelijke buitenterras liggen een negental zitkussens. Het is een verbeterd prototype dat Petra Blaisse voor het eerst in het jaar 2000 toonde naar aanleiding van haar eerste solotentoonstelling in de Galerie Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York.

7. Reflections spiegelende panelen en plinten in de wandelgangen Blauwe Zaal 52 x 390 cm / 75 x 320 cm / 2000 x 9,5 cm (b x h) roestvrij staal en PVC spiegelfolie De naar het zuiden gerichte wandelgang rond de Blauwe Zaal wordt op de wanden en de plinten op strategische plaatsen voorzien van verticale en horizontale spiegelende oppervlakken. Ze weerkaatsen het invallende daglicht en tonen op subtiele wijze de weg naar het buitenterras.

Petra Blaisse (NL / °1955, Londen) studeerde aan kunstacademies in Londen en Groningen. Tussen 1978 en 1987 werkte zij als collectiebeheerder toegepaste kunst en assistent-curator bij het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Van 1987 tot 1990 ontwierp zij tentoonstellingen voor toegepaste kunsten, onder andere voor O.M.A. In 1991 richtte zij in Amsterdam Inside Outside op. Zie ook: www.insideoutside.nl.

Il est un fait établi que la scène internationale de l’architecture est surtout dominée par les hommes. Même si c’est injustifié, les femmes y jouent encore trop souvent un rôle marginal. Dans le passé, de fortes personnalités féminines ont pourtant réussi à marquer cette discipline. Citons par exemple l’architecte et créatrice de meubles irlandaise Eileen Grey (1878-1976), pionnière de l’International Style, Margarete Schütte-Lihozky (1897-2000), première architecte diplômée en Autriche, créatrice de la ‘Frankfurter Küche’, prototype de la cuisine équipée moderne, la française Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999), qui intégra des appareils ménagers dans les intérieurs, et la brésilienne Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992), qui réussit à appliquer le rationalisme italien de manière expressionniste.

Aujourd’hui encore, au niveau international, les femmes continuent à enrichir la production de l’architecture et le débat à son sujet. Elles travaillent surtout en équipe, comme Liz Diller pour Diller & Scofidio (New York), Anne Lacaton pour Lacaton & Vassal (Paris), Annette Gigon pour Gigon & Guyer (Zürich) et Caroline Bos pour UN Studio (Amsterdam). Elles créent aussi sous leur propre nom, comme l’iranienne Zaha Hadid (Londres), l’italienne Gae Aulenti (Milan), la japonaise Kazuyo Sejima (Tokyo) et – pour nommer un exemple issu de notre terroir – la belge Martine de Maeseneer (Bruxelles). Mais le fait est que les architectes féminines demeurent minoritaires. C’est dommage, car les femmes possèdent justement la capacité d’apporter à l’aspect rationnel de l’architecture une plus-value en enrichissant cette discipline complexe d’éléments résolument tactiles, haptiques, poétiques ou capables de créer des atmosphères.

Petra Blaisse / Inside Outside Les projets de la créatrice d’intérieur et paysagiste néerlandaise Petra Blaisse et son atelier ‘Inside Outside’ sont presqu’exemplaires en la matière. Son parcours – née à Londres et vécu à Lisbonne, Vienne, Stockholm et La Haye – possède un caractère résolument interdisciplinaire. À l’issue de ses études dans des académies d’arts à Londres et Groningue, elle travailla de 1978 à 1987 comme responsable des collections et assistante curatrice des arts appliqués au Musée municipal d’Amsterdam. Elle devint ensuite créatrice freelance, organisant des expositions sur les arts appliqués, ce qui la mena aux applications textiles et à l’architecture de jardins et de paysages. En 1991, elle créa son propre studio, Inside Outside, et elle se spécialisa dans la combinaison particulière de créations tant intérieures qu’extérieures, où architecture et paysage sont étroitement imbriqués. Inside Outside est surtout connu pour le développement de toiles monumentales, non seulement uniques par leur forme et leurs dimensions, mais surtout parce qu’elles satisfont aux exigences techniques complexes en matière de lumière, d’acoustique et de climat. 1. Green Proscenium (in progress) Ce qui frappe dans son œuvre est la douceur littérale (le non-doctrinaire), la fluidité (l’antistatique), et - pour ainsi dire - la féminité (la force veloutée) avec laquelle elle harmonise lumière et son, faune et textile, béton et verre. L’élaboration de liens associatifs dans des contextes donnés est une de ses grandes qualités. Ceci se manifeste très clairement dans sa première grande monographie (2006), mise en forme par Irma Boom. Un texte continu - qui remet en question la construction obligatoire d’un livre - relie parfaitement la couverture à la page de titre vert vif et souple (!), suivie d’une série d’images d’atmosphère représentant des fleurs, de la mousse, des méduses et une fontaine, pour finalement arriver aux premiers faits ‘durs’: une carte climatologique du monde reprenant les lieux de tous ses projets.

Petra Blaisse a contribué à des projets importants en Europe, en Asie et aux États- Unis, tant individuellement qu’en collaboration avec des urbanistes et architectes comme Michael Maltzan (Los Angeles), Macken & Macken (Bruxelles), Tim Ronalds (Londres), SANAA (Tokyo) et UN-Studio (Amsterdam). Sa carrière fut fortement influencée par sa rencontre avec Rem Koolhaas, architecte et fondateur de l’O.M.A. (Office for MetropolitanA rchitecture). Avec l’O.M.A., Inside Outside participa à plus de vingt projets dans le monde entier, dont le Danstheater à La Haye aux Pays-Bas (1988), la Villa dall’Ava à Paris (1992), le Lille Grand Palais à Lille (1994), la Villa Floirac à Bordeaux (1998), le Prada Epicentre à New York (2001), le McCormick Tribune Campus Centre à Chicago (2004), la Seattle Central Library (2004), l’ambassade néerlandaise à Berlin (2004), la Casa da Música à Porto (2005) et l’Università Bocconi à Milan.

Actuellement, Inside Outside travaille à divers projets, dont des rideaux pour l’Università Bocconi à Milan, le masterplan et le réaménagement des Giardini di Porta Nuova à Milan, le plan du paysage du Central Business District à Dubaï, l’aménagement des jardins pour Shenzhen Stock Exchange et l’exposition permanente d’anciens maîtres au Centraal Museum d’Utrecht.

Radial Views Depuis quelques années, deSingel a en partie redéfini ses expositions d’architecture en réalisant des interventions temporaires au bâtiment lui-même. Cela permet de ne pas seulement répondre à la question de comment exposer l’architecture elle-même, mais aussi de rendre palpable et accessible la pensée spatiale d’un architecte de manière très directe, vivante et physique. Après les architectes PAUHOF de Vienne, SANAA de Tokyo et R&Sie(n) de Paris, la hollandaise Petra Blaisse réagit maintenant à sa façon aux conditions spatiales ambivalentes de ce site.

Le titre ‘Radial Views’ (vues étoilées/ radiales) ne se réfère pas seulement à un thème plus global. Il s’agit plutôt d’un point de vue, ou plus précisément de plusieurs points de vue, que la créatrice adopte par rapport au bâtiment de deSingel. Elle ne présente pas de sommaire de son travail, mais écrit un scénario pour le bâtiment 2. Cascade et ses environs, où le lien entre intérieur et extérieur est présent presqu’en permanence. Avec son bureau Inside Outside, elle réalise sur l’axe nord-sud du site de deSingel une huitaine de subtiles interventions architectoniques, créant ainsi de nouveaux points d’intérêt pour le bâtiment créé par l’architecte Léon Steynen.

Au sujet du bâtiment Steynens, le critique d’architecture belge Geert Bekaert écrivit en 1990: “Le bâtiment ne comprend pas d’espace, mais offre un podium plein de perspectives. La nature n’y est pas vouée à disparaître, mais est plutôt présente pour en profiter à distance”. Petra Blaisse s’inspira de ce commentaire. Ses interventions vont au-delà des limites, introduisant la nature environnante à l’intérieur ou déplaçant des détails architectoniques vers le jardin. Les différentes interventions d’Inside Outside forment ensemble un trajet qui – parfois très clairement, parfois de manière détournée – accompagne le visiteur d’espace en espace.

‘Radial Views’ est seulement la deuxième exposition individuelle de Petra Blaisse, après ‘Movements’ au Storefront for Art and Architecture à New York (2000). En plus de cela, elle a déjà réalisé bon nombre d’expositions liées à des commandes, comme récemment au Haus der Kunst à Munich (2007) et à la Huis de Buren flamande-hollandaise à Bruxelles (2006). Elle a participé à des expositions collectives, entre autres au Daegu International Textile Art Exhibition, Corée (2007), Villa Manin Centro d’Arte Contemporanea, Codroipo (I, 2005), la University of California, Los Angeles (USA, 2004), le Deutsches Architektur Museum, Frankfurt a.M. (D, 2002) et ‘Skin’ au Cooper-Hewitt Museum for Modern Art, New York (2002). Actuellement, Inside Outside participe à l’exposition ‘process’ à Riga, Lettonie (2008).

3. Boundary dismissed Travailler dans l’exposition

Son exposition ne présente pas de sommaire de son travail. Avec une huitaine d’interventions à l’échelle de 1:1, elle livre une réflexion sur le site de deSingel et elle analyse l’interaction entre intérieur et extérieur, entre bâtiment et entourage.

Green proscenium (in progress) deux jardins publics près de l’entrée principale chacun 1710 x 1110 x 80 cm (longueur x largeur x hauteur) 1.300 Lonicera ‘Elegant’, 2 bambous, gravier dolomite Le trajet à travers le bâtiment commence par une ‘pré scène verte’ près du parking et de l’entrée principale. Les deux jardins un peu sauvages et négligés ont été réaménagés en blocs géométriques stricts, pourvus d’un sentier serpentant et de trous ronds, qui donnent la possibilité d’accéder à l’entrée principale (la ‘pré scène’ mentionnée dans le titre) via un itinéraire plus lent. Les découpes dans l’ensemble des buissons permettent des ouvertures visuelles inattendues.

2. Cascade Miroirs intégrés dans les marches du grand escalier du hall d’entrée PVC feuille réfléchissante Sur les surfaces verticales des marches d’escalier, des bandes d’un matériau réfléchissant sont placées de manière irrégulière, reflétant la lumière ainsi que les passants. L’escalier devient une pièce d’eau, référence aux douves qui se situaient auparavant sur le terrain de deSingel.

3. Boundary dismissed Bande de tapis dans le vestiaire 4400 x 75 cm (longueur x largeur) Tapis type ‘ege highline 910’, imprimé, polyamide Parallèlement au pont du vestiaire qui traverse les deux jardins intérieurs, on a placé une longue bande de tapis d’herbacées. Le prototype de ce tapis de plantes fut montré pour la première fois à l’occasion de ‘Movements’, l’exposition individuelle de Petra Blaisse à Storefront (New York, 2000). Il devint ensuite un tapis pour le projet de la Seattle Central Library (2000-2004), après quoi le concept fut encore retravaillé pour plusieurs architectes, par exemple pour le nouveau bâtiment d’entrée VIP de l’aéroport de Schiphol.

Le rail s’échappe à la fin de la construction, décrivant une courbe élégante qui s’élance vers le jardin, où le rideau s’intègre à d’autres éléments verticaux, comme les arbres et les buissons.

5. Gouttes d’eau disques en acier inoxydable poli, dans l’herbe du jardin intérieur Ø 100 cm, 3 pièces / Ø 50 cm, 5 pièces / Ø 25 cm, 10 pièces acier inoxydable, collection Inside Outside Dans le patio occidental, la pelouse est parsemée de plusieurs petits et grands disques d’acier inoxydable et réfléchissant, qui d’après leur disposition, reflètent le ciel, le bâtiment, les spectateurs ou les plantes, et suggèrent en même temps des vues sur l’intérieur de la terre.

6. Instant Park coussins destinés à s’asseoir avec housse en herbe, dans le jardin intérieur et sur la terrasse du couloir Ø 150 x 150 x 40 cm / 125 x 125 x40 cm, 9 pièces prototype Inside Outside Dans le patio oriental et sur la terrasse extérieure sud sont disposés neuf coussins destinés à s’asseoir. Il s’agit d’un prototype amélioré que Petra Blaisse exhiba la première fois en 2000 à l’occasion de sa première exposition individuelle à la Galerie Storefront for Art and Architecture à New York.

7. Reflections Panneaux réfléchissants et plinthes dans les couloirs de laS alle Bleue 52 x 390 cm / 75 x 320 cm / 2000 x 9,5 cm (largueur x hauteur) acier inoxydable et feuille réfléchissante en PVC À des endroits stratégiques, les parois et les plinthes du couloir sud autour de la Salle Bleue sont pourvues de superficies réfléchissantes verticales et horizontales. Celles-ci reflètent la lumière du jour et indiquent subtilement le chemin vers la terrasse extérieure.

It is a fact that the international architectural scene is primarily dominated by men. All too often, and unjustly, women play only a marginal role. However, in the past certain strong female personalities have made their mark on this discipline. One thinks of the Irish furniture-maker and architect Eileen Gray (1878-1976), who was a pioneer of the International Style, Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1897-2000), who was the first female architecture graduate inA ustria and designed the ‘Frankfurter Küche’, which was the prototype of today’s fitted kitchens, the French architect Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999), who integrated household machines into home interiors, and the Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992) who applied Italian rationalism in an expressionist style.

Women today are also making a valuable contribution to the debate on, and the production of, architecture at an international level. They often work as part of a team, such as Liz Diller for Diller & Scofidio (New York), Anne Lacaton for Lacaton & Vassal (Paris), Annette Gigon for Gigon & Guyer (Zürich) and Caroline Bos for UN Studio (Amsterdam). They also create under their own names, such as the Iranian architect Zaha Hadid (London), the Italian Gae Aulenti (Milan), Kazuyo Sejima from Japan (Tokyo) and – to give an example from our part of the world – the Belgian architect Martine de Maeseneer (Brussels). Nevertheless, it remains a fact that female architects are in the minority. It is regrettable since women possess the ability to give an added value to the rational aspect of architecture that completes this complex discipline with distinct tactile, haptic, distinctive and poetic elements.

Petra Blaisse / Inside Outside The projects by the Dutch interior and landscape designer Petra Blaisse and her ‘Inside Outside’ studio serve as an exemplary illustration of this. Her background – born in London but grew up in Lisbon, Vienna, Stockholm and The Hague – has a pronounced interdisciplinary character. Following her studies at art academies in London and Groningen, she worked as a collection manager and assistant curator in applied art at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam from 1978 to 1987. She then worked as a freelance designer, concentrating on designing exhibitions of applied arts, which then led to textile applications and garden and landscape architecture. In 1991, she set up her own studio, Inside Outside, and specialised in the unusual combination of both interior and exterior design, where the architecture and landscape are interwoven with one another.

Inside Outside is primarily known for the creation of monumental canvasses which are unique not only in their form and dimensions, but also because they fulfil complex technical requirements with respect to light, acoustics and climate.

1. Green Proscenium (in progress) A striking feature of her work is the literal softness (the non-doctrinal aspect), the fluidity (anti-static) and – if you like – the femininity (the velvet hand) with which she brings sound and light, fauna and textile and concrete and glass into harmony. Making associative links within given contexts is one of her great qualities. This is especially well expressed in her first major monograph (2006), designed by Irma Boom. A continuous text, which questions the obligatory composition of a book, seamlessly connects the cover with the pliable (!), bright green title page, followed by a series of atmospheric images of flowers, moss, jellyfish and a fountain, to then eventually arrive at the first ‘hard’ facts: a world climate map showing the locations of all her projects.

Petra Blaisse has contributed to many major projects in Europe, Asia and the United States, both on a freelance basis and in partnership with urban planners and architects such as Michael Maltzan (Los Angeles), Macken & Macken (Brussels), Tim Ronalds (London), SANAA (Tokyo) and UN-Studio (Amsterdam). Her career was given a significant boost by her meeting with Rem Koolhaas, architect and founder of OMA (Office for MetropolitanA rchitecture). Together with OMA, Inside Outside has worked on more than twenty projects throughout the world, including the Nederlands Danstheater in The Hague (1988), the Villa dall’Ava in Paris (1992), the Lille Grand Palais in Lille (1994), the Villa Floirac in Bordeaux (1998), the Prada Epicentre in New York (2001), the McCormick Tribune Campus Centre in Chicago (2004), the Seattle Central Library (2004), the Dutch Embassy in Berlin (2004), the Casa da Música in Porto (2005) and the Università Bocconi in Milan.

Inside Outside is currently working on various projects, including curtains for the Università Bocconi in Milan, the masterplan and the refurnishing of the Giardini di Porta Nuova in Milan, the landscape plan for the Central Business District in Dubai, the layout of the gardens for the Shenzen Stock Exchange and the permanent exhibition of the old masters in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht.

Radial Views For several years deSingel has been partly redefining its architecture exhibitions by means of temporary interventions in the building itself. In this way, not only are answers given to the question of how architecture itself can be exhibited, but the spatial thinking of a particular architect is also rendered tangible and perceptible in a highly direct, illustrative and physical manner. Following the architects PAUHOF from Vienna, SANAA from Tokyo and R&Sie(n) from Paris, the Dutch architect Petra Blaisse is now responding in her own way to the ambivalent spatial conditions for exhibitions of this site.

The title ‘Radial Views’ (or: ray-like; star-shaped views) does not refer to an overarching theme. It is, rather, a standpoint, or more correctly, several standpoints which the designer adopts with respect to the deSingel building. She does not present any overview of her work, but instead writes a scenario for the building 2. Cascade and its surroundings in which the inside and outside are constantly being re-related to one another. Together with her Inside Outside studio, she is creating eight subtle architectonic interventions on the north-south axis of the deSingel site which stimulate new ways of looking at the building designed by architect Léon Steynen.

In 1990, the Belgian architecture critic Geert Bekaert wrote the following about Steynen’s building: ‘The building contains no space, but offers a stage full of perspectives. The natural element is not there to be disappeared into, but to be enjoyed from a distance.’ Petra Blaisse took this as her inspiration. Her interventions break through barriers, they bring the surrounding nature inside the building or take architectural details out into the garden. Inside Outside’s various interventions together form a series which, sometimes very clearly and sometimes indirectly, accompanies the visitor from space to space.

‘Radial Views’ is only the second solo exhibition by Petra Blaisse, following ‘Movements’ at the New York Storefront for Art and Architecture (2000). In addition, she has also held a number of commission-related exhibitions, such as recently in the Haus der Kunst in Munich (2007) and the Flemish-Dutch Centre ‘deBuren’ in Brussels (2006). She has also participated in group exhibitions including the Daegu International Textile Art Exhibition, Korea (2007), Villa Manin Centro d’Arte Contemporanea, Codroipo, Italy (2005), the University of California, Los Angeles (2004), the Deutsches Architektur Museum, Frankfurt am Main (2002) and ‘Skin’ in the Cooper-Hewitt Museum for Modern Art, New York (2002). Currently, Inside Outside can be seen in the ‘process’ exhibition being held in Riga, Latvia (2008).

3. Boundary dismissed Works in the exhibition

This exhibition does not present an overview of her work. With eight interventions on a 1:1 scale, she reflects upon the deSingel site and analyses the interaction between the inside and outside, between the building and its surroundings.

The route through the building begins with a ‘green proscenium’ at the car park and the main entrance. The two somewhat wild and untidy shrubberies were replanted as rigid geometric blocks. They were provided with a curved path and round holes, which offers the choice of a slower approach to the main entrance (the ‘forestage’ mentioned in the title). The cut-outs in the blocks of shrubbery create unexpected views.

2. Waterfall mirrors inlaid in the steps of the large staircase in the entrance hall PVC mirror foil Strips of reflective material have been placed irregularly on the vertical surfaces of the steps which reflect both the light and the people walking past. The staircase becomes a pond, a reference to the fortress moats which once formed part of the deSingel site.

3. Boundary dismissed strip of carpet in the cloakroom 4400 x 75 cm (l x w) carpet type ‘ege highline 910’, printed, polyamide A long strip of carpet with a pattern of magnified grasses is laid parallel to the cloakroom bridge which spans the two interior gardens. The prototype of the plant carpet was first exhibited in ‘Movements’, Petra Blaisse’s solo exhibition atS torefront (New York, 2000). It was then developed into a project carpet for Seattle Central Library (2000-2004), after which the concept was further expanded for various architects, for example for the new VIP entrance building at Schiphol airport.

The rail escapes at the end of the construction and turns in an elegant curve into the garden where the curtain forms part of a group of vertical elements, such as the trees and bushes.

5. Waterdrops highly-polished stainless steel discs in the grass of the interior garden Ø 100 cm, 3 discs / Ø 50 cm, 5 discs / Ø 25 cm, 10 discs stainless steel, Inside Outside collection On the western patio, a number of small and highly reflective stainless steel discs have been scattered across the grass which, according to one’s standpoint, reflect the air, the building, the viewer or plants and simultaneously suggest views of the innermost parts of the earth.

6. Instant Park hassocks with a covering of grass in the interior garden and on the lobby terraces Ø 150 x 150 x 40 cm / 125 x 125 x 40 cm, 9 hassocks inside Outside prototype On the eastern patio and the southern outdoor terrace are nine hassocks. They are an improved prototype which Petra Blaisse first exhibited in 2000 on the occasion of her first solo exhibition at theS torefront for Art and Architecture in New York.

7. Reflections reflective panels and skirting boards in the corridors of the Blue Hall 52 x 390 cm / 75 x 320 cm / 2000 x 9.5 cm (w x h) stainless steel and PVC mirror foil The walls and skirting boards of the south-orientated corridor around the Blue Hall have been fitted out at strategic locations with vertical and horizontal reflective surfaces. They reflect the daylight and subtly point the way to the outdoor terrace.

5. Waterdrops Biography

Petra Blaisse (NL / b. 1955, London) studied at art academies in London and Groningen. Between 1978 and 1987 she worked as an applied art collection manager and assistant curator at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
