But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25) The Seven EssenƟal Elements of Parish Life constantly interrelate, each nurturing and supporƟng the other with the communal celebraƟon of Sunday Eucharist at the center. The very first imperative from Jesus today is “Fear no one.” I hear “fear no one” and immediately check my back. Is it against a strong wall? Who is in front of me? What’s coming toward my right or left? “Fear no one” is a close relative to “do not be afraid”. I hear “do not be afraid” and tense up. The dentist says: “Don’t be afraid, this won’t hurt”. I ask that same dentist: “Okay, why don’t you do the procedure on yourself and let me judge?” At least show me a YouTube video! “Don’t be afraid” – then why do I hear people screaming and scrambling for their lives? Fear no one. Do not be afraid. And I’m paralyzed, paranoid, and cynically not trusting neither the message nor the messenger. A spiritual director once told me “Do not be afraid” and all of its relative commands appear some three hundred sixty six times in Scripture. That’s one for every day including leap year. A “gee whiz fact” to be sure. I have been tricked. I’ve been made the butt of jokes. I’ve trusted a hoodwinker. When these words come from Jesus or his Heavenly Father, they are different and they encourage us, his followers, to be different. What are you afraid of? Name your fears! What do you want? Identify your desires. Desire nothing more than friendship with the Lord of Life. Fear only falling out of friendship with God. Don’t be afraid of humans; fear God – in a healthy way. Want nothing more than a deep relationship with God and everything else will fall into place as you serve Him and His People. It took Jeremiah, the prophet in our first reading, a life time of struggle to understand that truth. In his prophetic teaching, we learn and are led to a new life with God. So many very good Catholic men and women simply want what they have been directed toward their whole life – even having survived a Roman Catholic education; the familiar unbridled values of the American Dream. Those common “values and goods” being power, position, fame, and fortune. So many are sent to a religious school to get a good education which ought to guarantee a good job (real money, objects, power and position in the industry). Not bad or wrong answers - but they are incomplete and not the total purpose of Catholic education which is aimed at becoming a good citizen of the State and the salvation of your soul, the “who you really are”. Here’s the question: What will happen to you – the “who you really are” should the American Dream tarnish, grow old, become obsolete, or is taken away for a reason you hadn’t planned on? Rely on a relationship with God who will be always with you. Rely on Jesus Christ the Son of God and the Holy Spirit, the power of God with whom you are connected and in communion. Be afraid of the one, ones, or anything that may kill that relationship. With God we can do the “work of God” –the opus Dei. With God you will have safety and power. You know all of us. The good news is you have practiced it and built a wonderful community of school, office, and church. Let us care to worship the Lord who gives life to this community. People of St. Juliana – don’t give up because it’s paid for or because it’s summer. Together let us worship and adore during our twenty four hour day of Eucharistic Exposition. Be mindful of assignments for the liturgy; ministries of usher (hospitality), lector, and Extra-Ordinary ministers of Holy Eucharist, and altar server. If you cannot be present for an assigned Mass, please find a replacement. The Lord and our community depend on all of us. I fear you not being present.
