P 50 and 60 Trabant 2. Trabant P 601 Years of Construction 1964 to 1969 3. Trabant P 601 YoC 1970 to 1983 4. Trabant P 601 YoC 1984 to 1990 5. Trabant 1.1 6. Trabant „Kübel“ 7. Trabant „Tramp“ 8. Tuning cars 2-stroke 9. Tuning cars 4-stroke Within each category prices are awarded from first to third place. The assessment merely refers to the authenticity of the vehicles. The cate- gories 2-stroke and 4-stroke tuning are exempt. The jury is determined to professionalize the assessment by the help of documents (Sachsenring in- formation booklets and based on this the website www.trabant-original.de) and the experience of renowned jury members. The jury will assess the vehicles so that the car which comes closest to the state in which it was initially delivered will receive the first place. In case of an identical condition an authentic lacquer will be preferred over a new lac- quer. A road legal car will also be preferred, since the jury is convinced that the year-round use of the car adds more to the preservation of the historical asset Trabant than the exclusive presentation of a car which is not road le- gal. The overall care will also be considered. Furthermore, the engine number, the VIN and the transmission number will be compared. The rims may not be older than 6 months in relation to the YoC of the car and shall be coined uniformly. All details shall correlate to the YoC and not be added later on. „Made up“ cars will not have a prospect on first places. Thus, the jury kindly asks to present only serious registrations during the assessment. The tuning categories will assess 2-stroke and 4-stroke cars separately. The workmanship of the modification will be assessed. Thus, not only the records in the papers matter but also the technical work on the car itself. The more refined the modification the more likely the car is to reach the first places. A complete list will be coordinated previous to the ITT with all jury members and published in the magazine Supertrabi and other media. Insurance protection: The host concluded a host-liability-insurance according to the provisions for ADMV. The treaty involves the insurance of the audience. Disclaimer of liability: The participants (drivers as well as co-drivers) take part on their own risk. They bear the sole civil and criminal responsibility for all damage caused by themselves or the vehicles operated by them. By tendering their registration driver and co-drivers declare waiver to claims of any kind for damage that relate to the event, that is against the host, support, officials and other parties that relate to the organisation of the event as well as other participants. As far as the operated vehicle is not the property of the participant, he nonetheless releases the favoured group of people from duty against claims by the car owner. This disclaimer of liability does not apply for personal or other damage that was caused by negligent or wilful violation of duty by those favoured of this disclaimer of liability. This disclaimer also applies to possible damage of the car caused by the attachment of the number or other badges of the event. It is the duty of the participant to attach the respective badges on his car. In case of abortion of the event due to act of nature or safety reasons no claimof reimbursement for the admission fee or other damage applies. In case of dispute, the German version of the disclaimer of liability applies. Safety regulations: The motion of the vehicles must correlate with the guidelines of the German traffic regulations. Specific regulations do not apply since the event does not match the characteristics of a motorsport event or a rallye. On the venue of the event (August Horch Museum) driving may not exceed the speed of pedestrians (max. 5 km/h). Every participant is responsible himself for traffic safety. There will be no technical control. According to the regulations of the vehicle approval act from March 1st 2007 only vehicles permitted to go on public roads are entitled to participate. Participation with a red licence plate, as used by car dealers, is not allowed. General remarks: The host is responsible for the announcement and execution of the event. The interpretation of the announcement remains with the host. The orders of the host as well as his assistants and supervisors are to be followed under any circumstances. • Trabant May Make Comeback 10:32, September 17, 2009
Trabant may make comeback 10:32, September 17, 2009 A vastly updated version of the boxy, exhaust-belching Trabant compact made in East Germany could be in production by 2012 as an electric powered green machine - but only if the company finds the right investor. A concept version of an electric Trabant, dubbed the NT, is on display at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The NT retains the simple shape of the old version, the P 601 Universal Trabant, but will substitute its loud, smoky two-stroke engine with a plug-in electric motor. Solar panels on the roof will power some of the car's functions. The new four-seater's lithium-ion battery will have a charging time of about eight hours and a range of 160 kilometers or 100 miles. The car will have a maximum speed of 130 kilometers per hour, or about 80 mph. It will be sparse, however: there will be "no unnecessary gadgetry" in the car, Trabant said. "Simple, strong, light and practical - for decades, these virtues stood for the Trabant brand," the company said. "It could be on the road by 2012 provided that we are able to find a strong partner. The worldwide known brand 'Trabant' now offers a strong investor the entry into an exciting automobile project with potential for the future." The project is being initiated by a number of companies and organizations led by German model building company Herpa GmbH, and including Indikar, a specialty car body builder, and Depo Engineering GmbH. Nils Poschwatta, once a designer for Volkswagen AG, came up with the form of the new version, and the state development organization Autoland Saxony is also contributing to the project.

ENTERPRISE PACTS FOR PRODUCTION IN CENTRAL EUROPE 11 CONCLUSION 18 BIBLIOGRAPHY 19 Multinational companies (MNCs) are at the heart of the international political economy. Thus, understanding the patterns of their strategies and governance is a crucial task for those who want to understand the forces and counter-forces of increased international competition. For a long time the scholars who studied MNCs have operated with simplistic dichotomies underlying the firm strategies of internationalisation: market access vs. cost reduction or home country vs. host country traditions. Yet, the theorisation of upgrading outcomes according to the original motivation of investment – efficiency seeking vs. market seeking (Meardi, Marginson et al. 2006) – is at its limits when we realise that both motivations played a role in investment decisions. To explain the shift in industrial upgrading one needs a better conceptualisation of internationalisation strategies of manufacturing multinational companies. A more dynamic institutional analysis that takes into consideration the role of agency is needed.

  • Case 4 DAIMLER CHRYSLER and the WORLD AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY
Case 4 DAIMLER CHRYSLER AND THE WORLD AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY* T HE M ERGER The merger between Daimler Benz and Chrysler Corporation announced in May 1998 was the biggest industrial merger in history. It created the world’s third largest automotive company (after GM and Ford) with 421,000 employees worldwide and sales of over $130 billion.1 The prospects for the merger looked good. Because of the two companies’ complementary product ranges, regional concentrations, and capabilities, its logic was acclaimed by both investors and auto industry analysts. The extent of the companies’ pre-merger and post-merger planning by the two companies was also unusual. Under the vision of “one company, one vision, one chairman, two cultures,” the merged company establis hed an elaborate structure of joint Chrysler-Daimler integration teams which began work on reconciling and integrating almost every aspect of the two companies development, technology, operations, and marketing with a view to achieving the $3 billion in cost savings that the merger anticipated. Within a year, however, the merger had run into trouble. The rapid exodus of Chrysler’s senior managers made it clear that the deal was not so much a merger of equals as a German takeover. Despite the efforts of the post-merger integration teams, few of the anticipated cost savings had been realized. Most serious was the rapidly deteriorating performance of Chrysler. With its dominance in the once-lucrative sport-utility and minivan sectors eroding, and a dearth of new product, revenues and profits sagged during 2000. By September 2000, Daimler-Chrysler’s share price had almost halved from its post-merger high, and Chrysler’s losses for the second half of the year were forecast to reach $700 million.
