  • The Economics of East and West German Cars
The Economics of East and West German Cars Free Market and Command economies produce and distribute goods & services using vastly different methods. Prior to reading the documents, consider the following: a. What is the significance of car production for individuals and society? b. What is the significance of car ownership for individuals and society? c. How are cars distributed in society? In other words, who makes decisions about pricing and allocation of this good within society? Review and annotate the documents. Consider each document for its purpose, context, point of view and potential audience. What clues do the documents provide about life in East and West Germany, Cold War economic systems, and current economic issues? Use the documents to evaluate the outcomes associated with command and free market economies. Your response should include... ● A clear, well-stated claim/argument in response to the prompt. ● At least two well-developed body paragraphs in support of your claim. ● Analysis of at least seven documents to support your argument. West: Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) East: German Democratic Republic (GDR) 1 Document 1: “How German cars beat British motors - and kept going.” BBC August, 2013 In August 1945 the British Army sent a major called Ivan Hirst to take control of the giant Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg, which had been built under the Nazis to produce 'people's cars' for the German masses. Ignoring his sceptical superiors, Hirst could see the potential amid the shattered debris of the Wolfsburg factory. Rebuilding Volkswagen, he thought, would be a step towards rehabilitating Germany as a prosperous, peaceful European ally.

  • Powered Light Vehicles
Powered Light Vehicles: Opportunities for Low Carbon ‘L-Category’ Vehicles in the UK The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership was established in 2003 to accelerate the shift to lower carbon vehicles and fuels and create opportunities for UK businesses. It is a public-private partnership with approximately 200-member organisations from diverse backgrounds including automotive and fuel supply chains, vehicle users, academics and environmental groups. The LowCVP with its members play a key role in helping influence government strategy to deliver its low carbon road transport mandate. With growing interest in the field, LowCVP formed a consortium of stakeholders, bringing together a range of interested parties over the years to impartially assess the potential opportunities and actions required for L-Category “Powered Light Vehicles” (PLVs) to penetrate the UK transport market. The consortium members are: Dr Paul Nieuwenhuis Centre for Automotive Industry Research & EV Centre of Excellence, Cardiff University Dr Christophe Bastien Research Institute for Future Transport and Cities, Dr Huw Davies Coventry University Prof. Kambiz Ebrahimi and Mr Simon Bailey Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering, Loughborough University Prof. Allan Hutchinson Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment, Oxford Brookes University Mr Jonathan Murray The Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership Dr Aoife Foley and Mr Michael Treanor School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, Queens’ University Belfast Dr Richard Barrett Civil Engineering and Industrial Design, The University

  • Competing Grand Prix Technologies of the Past
P.1 of 4 Competing Grand Prix technologies of the past In 2014, when the FIA Formula 1 engine of the 3rd Pressure-Charged (TurboCharged) Era will be so closely specified, even down to the diameter of the valve stems, that it seems likely that only company-specific detail drawing standards will produce any differences (“electrickery” apart), it is interesting to recollect some of the great technical duels of the past century of Grand Prix racing. In 1912 at the French Grand Prix, run under Formule Libre, 14.1 litre FIATs battled with 7.6 litre Peugeots having a more advanced specification and they just lost. The Peugeot introduced Double Overhead Camshafts and this became the valve operating mechanism of choice for nearly all subsequent racing engines and now is commonplace in ordinary production cars. Over 1934 – 1939 the front-engined IL8 and V12 Mercedes-Benz and the mid-engined V16 and V12 Auto Union cars, built firstly to the 750 kg empty and then the 3 litre Pressure-Charged (PC) / 4.5 litre Naturally Aspirated (NA) rules, fought tooth-and-nail for supremacy. This was a German internecine rivalry, perhaps sharpened by geography as Swabia (Stuttgart) versus Saxony (Chemnitz). Mercedes, with about twice the expenditure of Auto Union, beat them over the 48 races which they both contested by 27 wins to 17. Alfa Romeo wins (4) added a little spice occasionally. See Picture 1 on P.3. In 1949, in the temporary absence of Alfa Romeo, the rules which applied 1947 – 1951 allowed 1.5 litre PC cars (V12 Ferrari and IL4 Maserati) to compete with 4.5 litre NA (IL6 Lago-Talbot).
