There seems to be a constant bias in journalism today. CNN leans liberal while Fox leans conservative. As a result, “fake news” has become a prevalent term of our society. The reality of what goes on in the world doesn’t seem to be reported as an un- biased report. Journalism gets a bad rap, but we can’t give up on it just yet. Without journalists working to uncover the truth and bring atrocities and injustices to our attention how can we ex- pect anything to change?

It was once stated, “Journalism is the fourth branch of government.” Journalism is the only way for the public to fully understand what happens inside the walls of the White House and the tragedies and injustices going on in the Middle East. Despite the “fake news” complaints, there are journalists out there that are working really hard to get to the root of the issues from a neutral stand- point and discover change. For these reasons, Time Mag- azine’s annual “person of the year” is four journalists this year. Time Magazine developed the “Person of the Year” back in 1927. Originally starting as “Man of the Year”, the idea was highlight the individual who influenced history the most - whether for positive or negative reasons. The founders of Time, Henry Luce and Briton Haddon were strong believers in the motto that history is shaped by extraordinary men and women. Today Time has grown and de- veloped and it has become the Time Person of the Year. Each year Time’s December magazine has the face of the person(s) who made an impact that year. Time magazine made a precise effort to show the reality and importance of journalism in the 2018 Time Person of the Year. It was also be the first time a few deceased people made the cover of Time Magazine.

The four journalists, dubbed “The Guardians” were a group of journalists who have been heralded for their journalism work. These four journalists have been collectively named person of the year but they are only four of a march larger group of infly- encial journalists. This group of journalists covers media world wide. Lives were threatened when covering Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Mohammed bin Salman and even five staffers died from old coverage about an angry gunman. The entire group has either been killed or is currently behind bars. “‘For taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths, for the imperfect but essential quest for facts that are central to civil discourse, for speaking up and for speaking out, the Guardians’ are the Person of the Year,’ Time editor Ed Felsenthal wrote.” These are the journalists doing the dirty work. These are the people that will keep journalism alive because they were willing to fight, they were willing to die for it. Felsenthal added, “It is very rare that a person’s influence grows so immensely in death.”

The influence of the Guardians is one that gives us hope as a school, a city, a state, a nation, and a world. There is still greatness in what seems to be a world of trouble. There is still hope that we, as a people, will grow in knowledge and in wisdom in pursuit of peace. Martin Luther King Jr.

Child Exploitation on Youtube Kids 100,000 views

The Quill 1M subscribers YouTube Kids Isn’t as Innocent as it Seems?

On February 23, 2015, released YouTube Kids, an app carefully designed to create a safe online space where children could enjoy their favorite YouTube channels and videos without disturbances. Youtube Kids was the safer alternative to YouTube, parents could easily leave their children unattended while busy. However, Youtube nor Youtube Kids could keep from the plague of millions of videos and channels that produced malicious content targeted towards children. “Many of these disturbing videos contained graphic images of gore, violence, and a sexually suggestive objective.”

These videos were able to pass through YouTube’s algorithms without issue. The reason for this? YouTube’s algorithms based passable videos off of titles or captions. The creators of these videos applied key words and phrases like, “surprise”, “review”, “cartoon”, “fun”, and “colorful” to their titles and tagged them as such. To further their attempt, titles and thumbnails relied on famous children’s characters to draw kids in, you’d often see Elsa, Minnie, Mickey, and Paw Patrol adorning the covers. Kids have and still do fall victim to these traps, reports of angered parents and the media caught the attention of many, including YouTube. So tell me, why hasn’t Youtube or any major company whose characters were used in these “kids” videos gone to the fullest extent to restrict them?

YouTube KIDS

One reason may be the amount of revenue due to billions of views on videos packed with ads, another might be the general free promotion of kids characters on tons of YouTube videos. It is especially difficult to rid of all these videos because of their clever methods to pass off as child friendly and because computerized algorithms can’t really identify them as unsuitable for children. Ultimately, the reasons may not matter as much as the ways in which we could prevent this exploitation.

“A simple prevention method is to flag and report the video as inappropriate.”

For parents, it would be advised to create a unique playlist with videos that have been reviewed by the parent or guardian for the child to watch. Restricted Mode may alleviate generally mature material from your Youtube account, by opening the account icon and going to settings, one can enable Restricted Mode by clicking on it.

YouTube itself to prevent this issue is taking steps forward by having actual people review videos to authorize them as acceptable for YouTube or not, though ultimately it will be very difficult to keep children safe from these videos, it is important to take action .

Recommended GEN Z: A DECREASING WORKFORCE Designer: Cornelio Soto Today only 16 percent of the workforce in food Writer: Bella Pieroni and only 14 percent of the workforce in retail is BEFORE taken up by the Gen Z. The Gen Z is Generation Z, the generation of people born from the end of the 25% 20% 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s. The Gen Z Food Retail has had a significant decline in the amount that this generation works as compared to the other generations before it.

Before the Gen Z generation, teenagers accounted for about 25 percent of the food workforce and 20 percent of retail. There are many theories as to why the Gen Z generation has decreased the amount of teens working today. The most popular theories include too many school NOW activities, too much homework and an increase in 16% 14% foreign workers coming to do the jobs traditionally Food Retail filled by younger people. Therefore, the Gen Z generation has lost their drive to get a job.

But there is one theory about why teens in 2018 are losing their drive to work that is taking the world by storm, school. In today’s society, school has taken up most of teens time. “Teens also lose their will to work because during the school year, they have too much homework, school activities and just wanting to spend time with their friends.” The one time of the year that teens in 2018 might have a job is during the summer. Although, most teens today still don’t get a job over the summer because they work so hard during school for most of the year and even their little time off still have some work to do. High school students today are still doing some school work over their summer “break” because of schools reintroduction to summer homework.

It’s not all the school’s fault though, because teens in 2018 cram their schedules to the brim with other things besides school work like their extracurricular activities. In today’s world, but also depending on the sport, it is typical to travel for tournaments and games that are one or two hours away or even out of state! This can cause a lot of stress on the teens as well as their families. There are even some people that play school and travel teams of one sport during the same season! People attend the march because of moral values, religious beliefs, or because they support the end of abortion due to science. Regardless of their rea- soning, everyone just wants innocent lives to stop being taken. Many protests throughout the United States also attracts counter-protesters, and some- times the protests even result in violence. It was inspiring to see the vast amount of peo- ple at The March for Life and notice that no one is counter-protesting abortion.

During the March for Life the only individual protesting for something besides and end to abortion was someone speaking against the Church and its’ priests (photo to the right). In response, many clergy members who were marching started praying the rosary to over- power the voice of the one man (photo be- low).
